Abstract

Translating cultural terms is essential for ensuring accurate and effective cultural transfer in reading materials. This study aimed to analyze cultural terms, translation techniques, and translation quality in children’s folklore books available in the Let’s Read digital library. The study employed a mixed-methods design using a concurrent embedded approach. The sample consisted of 15 folklore books from the Let’s Read platform, along with informants including English speakers, teachers, and parents. The data comprised qualitative data namely cultural terms and translation techniques collected through content analysis sheets and interviews, as well as quantitative data on translation quality gathered through assessment sheets. Qualitative data were analyzed with content analysis and quantitative data descriptively. The results showed that the most prevalent cultural specifics found were related to material culture and social culture. On the other hand, borrowing was the most frequent translation procedure found in children’s folklore texts on Let’s Read platform. Last, the average of translated evaluation score is 2.49 which was relatively acceptable in terms of describing quality and adequacy, but there were still some aspects which could be further improved with respect to translatability and acceptability especially regarding its readability.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify the linguistic and intercultural needs of tour guide trainees as a foundation for developing integrative communicative competence through English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials that promote intercultural awareness. The trainees, who are currently at the A1 proficiency level, exhibit a rudimentary understanding of the intercultural aspects pertinent to tourists. This deficiency manifests in a conspicuous lack of self-assurance and proficiency in English communication. This case prompted an analysis of their specific learning needs. A qualitative case study was conducted, involving 23 trainees and one senior tour guide at Prambanan Temple. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The findings indicate that the primary need for trainees is the development of effective communication skills, particularly in listening and speaking, through materials that integrate linguistic competence and intercultural awareness. The analysis identified grammar and pronunciation as the most essential linguistic elements, while intercultural communication was deemed the most crucial cultural aspect. Consequently, ESP materials for tour guides should integrate B1-level English proficiency with intercultural understanding to prepare them for effective professional communication in global tourism contexts.

Abstract

This study explores stand-up comedy as a medium for expressing socio-political issues and examines how political figures respond to such satire in digital media. This study scopes the discourse and power relations in Gibran Rakabuming’s response to Pandji Pragiwaksono’s satire in his Mens Rea show, which was recorded and published on Netflix and Tretan Universe YouTube channel. Previous studies of political satire have focused mainly on the construction of humour. This study fills the gap by examining the strategic responses of targeted politicians. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this study analyzes micro-level linguistic features through Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) metafunctions, ideational, interpersonal, and textual and examines how language constructs meaning and sociocultural practices through Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), drawing on Fairclough’s framework of representation, relations, and identity. Gibran’s composed demeanor functions discursively as a strategy of political deflection. His serenity, laughter, and simple language transform political criticism into harmless biological humor framed as natural and innocent. This strategy exemplifies ‘soft hegemony,’ whereby politicians employ humor and self-deprecation to diffuse critique and maintain authority. This study greatly advances the field of political discourse by broadening the scope of application of SFL and CDA frameworks to informal digital multimodal interactions, which are usually dismissed as trivial entertainment but are in fact highly complex and sophisticated sites for ideological negotiation and power reproduction.
