Abstract

This book presents a study on democracy and civil society in non-Western countries. Like other discourse on democracy and modernization, civil society emerged in the West with its specific culture and tradition. Therefore the development of discourse on civil society in non-Western countries has raised a question: Is a social system that emerged in a particular culture compatible to a society with different culture and tradition? Among other things, the book edited by Robert W. Hefner is aimed to answer the above mentioned question. The contents of the book consists of two parts. The first part puts forward articles written by political scientists and sociologists on structure and basic frame of civil society, then the second part contains various articles written by anthropologists and sociologists on the development of civil society in various non-Western countries. Experiences of applying civil democracy in non-Western countries, as discussed in the second part of the book, shout that the discourse on democracy and civil society is not a simple matter.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v7i2.713

Abstract

This essay describes the beliefs and practices associated with the notion of ziarah in a single community, that of Bayat, a small district (kecamatan) in Klaten between Yogyakarta and Surakarta. There are some of terms from Bayat in this text, because it is revealing to consider how key terms have been used within their culture of origin. In elucidating ziarah practices and its interpretations, visitors in Bayat refer to the cultural contexts with which they are familiar. The logic of ziarah thus reflects visitor's everyday life experiences. Applying vernacular terms used in Bayat entails taking this cultural context into consideration.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v7i1.716

Abstract

This book is the most recent publication presenting an anthropological study on the Javanese religion and culture. The seminal work of Clifford Geertz, The Religion of Java (1960), seems to have inspired a number of scholars to study further the complex entities of Javanese religion. The book of Mark Woodward, Islam in Java: Normative Piety and Mysticism in the Sultanate of Yogyakarta (1989), is one of the scholarly works inspired by the division of Javanese religion by Clifford Geertz into abangan, santri and priyayi. The same topic can also be found in the work by Robert Hefner, Hindu Javanese: Tengger Tradition and Islam (1985). However, different from Clifford Geertz who holds the opinion that Javanese religion-albeit plural in an appearance-is basically established on the basis of Hindu-Buddhist, religion the two mentioned scholars state that Islam in an important basis of the Javanese religion.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v7i1.720

Abstract

Religious violent extremism remains a problem for Indonesia. Recently, three consecutive attacks carried out by violent religious extremists — a suicide bombing in front of a Cathedral Church in Makassar South Sulawesi, the discovery of several prepared high explosive bombs in Condet Jakarta, and a female lone wolf attack on the Indonesian Police Criminal Investigation Agency — shocked the public (Fakta-data di Balik Bom Bunuh Diri, 29 Maret 2021; Polisi sebut Terduga Teroris Condet & Bekasi, 2021; Teroris Penyerang Mabes Polri, 2021). It may not be surprising since there were some early indications from various studies that some Indonesian people still have religious attitudes and behaviors that are exclusive, closed, anti-citizenship, anti-state, and even pro-violence (PPIM, 2016, 2017, 2018; Puspidep, 2017, 2018). The PPIM study results (2018) show that around 58.5 percent of students tend to be religious radical, and 51.1 percent tend to be intolerant to differences within Muslim groups. Then, as many as 34.3 percent of students are intolerant to non-Muslim groups. Radical views that are intolerant toward those who are different are the first step to violent extremism. These studies are a reminder that violent extremism is a problem for all of Indonesian society. Therefore, PPIM surveyed the perceptions of the public, students, teachers, and Indonesian Members of Parliament on violent extremism.

Abstract

This article explores Indonesia’s institutional foundations to understand the country’s resilience against violent extremism. First, Pancasila has been the foundation of an inclusive state that can bind Indonesian diversity. Second, multiparty elections allow Islamist groups to participate in politics and express their aspirations constitutionally, thus moderating their violent strategies. Third, the support of the largest Islamic organizations, especially NU and Muhammadiyah, for counterterrorism and law enforcement against extremist orchestrated by the government. Both organizations exhibit a stronghold essential to countering the Salafi jihadist ideology. However, although infrequent and small in scale, the continued acts of violent extremism in Indonesia have shown that there is still room for the terrorist ideology to grow. Some Islamic educational institutions deliberately educate students to support Islamism, and some students are introduced to Salafi jihadist ideology. Such a development should serve as a warning for the government to pay more attention to the curriculum and teachers, especially in Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

Abstract

In the past few years, the number of e-commerce businesses in Indonesia is increasing including those that offer vegetables and fruits. Due to COVID-19 outbreak, transactions through e-commerce sites had also increased. During the outbreak, customers in Indonesia had a tendency to allocate their income for essential needs such as vegetables and fruits. This study aims to: (1) assess the frequency of vegetables and fruits purchases through e-commerce sites before the Omicron outbreak (October – December 2021) and during the Omicron outbreak (January – March 2022); and (2) examine the determinant factors of customers repurchase decision to buy vegetables and fruits through e-commerce sites. Data were collected using online questionnaire distributed to 140 respondents that were selected based on age and experience of purchasing vegetables and fruits online. The differences in frequency of purchasing vegetables and fruits through e-commerce sites before and during the Omicron outbreak were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Meanwhile, the determinant factors of the decision to repurchase vegetables and fruits through e-commerce sites were analyzed using binary logistic regression. The results showed that there is no significant difference in frequencies between purchasing before and during the Omicron outbreak. Education, products, price discounts, promotions, and COVID-19 situation are the determinant factors of repurchase decision of vegetables and fruits through e-commerce sites.  As the writer conducting this study, there was no previous study on the same case that using the combination of demographic, marketing mix, and situational factor as determinant factors on customers repurchase decision through online platforms.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are (1) to analyze the household's income structure of corn farmers based on variety types and land holdings and (2) to see the relation between income distribution and land holding and types of variety. Data analyzed in the study were collected from two main corn-producing districts during the planting seasons of 2007/2008. Results of the study show that share of income from farm business to the total households' income is relatively high, i.e., shares of income from corn farming based on variety type varied from 44 to 87 percent in Sinar Tebudak and 49 to 87 percent in Pangmilang. Distribution of corn farming income for all types of variety is more balanced than that of total households' income due to variation in non-farm income. The study also indicates that there is a positive correlation in all variety types between total households' income and land holding. The use of superior variety could improve distribution of corn farming income and distribution of households' income. Implications of the study are (1) enhancing non-farm employment in rural areas is essential to improve households' income; (2) implementing land reform is one of the instruments to create a better distribution of land holding and income distribution in rural areas; and (3) improving supporting inputs and facilities like water irrigation, fertilizer, pesticide, credit and agricultural extension service for the corn farmers are essential in order to improve income distribution in the study area.
