Abstract

This article investigates the complex themes in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find" aiming to reveal the narrative's inherent complexity. The main focus is on the central themes of morality and the elusive nature of goodness. O'Connor's extraordinary literary skills, characterized by a distinctive narrative style and technique, are carefully examined to reveal a wide range of characters. Each of these characters grapples with the balance between virtue and moral compromise during what initially seems like an ordinary family trip. At the forefront of this exploration is the grandmother, who is elevated to protagonist status. His flawed moral beliefs and unwavering sense of righteousness become important forces that shape the events that occur. Using a multidimensional analytical approach, this research integrates elements of Southern Gothic literature and religious symbolism to enrich our understanding of O'Connor's storytelling. The findings and discussions section hones in on key themes, including Violence and Grace, Goodness, Punishment and Forgiveness, Familial Conflict and Familial Love, and Moral Decay. The analysis illuminates how the narrative utilizes violence for transformative effects, navigates the ambiguity of goodness, portrays the power of forgiveness amid harsh realities, depicts familial love emerging amidst conflict, and examines perceptions of moral decline. Through such a comprehensive exploration, this study not only deepens our appreciation of O'Connor's thematic choices but also provides insight into the complexity of human nature. This emphasizes the challenges inherent in the pursuit of goodness and moral integrity. The article concludes by highlighting the enduring relevance of “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” encouraging readers to reflect on the timeless themes of morality and the complexity of the human condition

The first result showed that the linguistic variations in terms of conversational strategies used by the male and female characters in the game are minimal responses, hedges, tag questions, questions, commands and directives, swearing and taboo language, and compliments. Meanwhile, the second result discovered the differences from the use of conversational strategies between women and men. The differences laid on the purposes and impressions aimed separately as women tend to soften their utterances while men tend to come off stronger. Therefore, men and women do not differ in terms of the conversational strategies, but the purposes and impressions of both parties contrast significantly.

Abstract

Taboo words are deeply shaped by the context of the situation, including the relationships between speakers and listeners, the topic being discussed, the setting, and the function of the conversation. This study focuses on the use of taboo words in Horrible Bosses movies, aiming to identify the types of taboo words used and to analyze their functions in expressing anger, frustration, and joke. The data for this research were collected using the documentation method, which involved note-taking. A checklist instrument was also used to help identify and collect specific dialogue adjacencies. The data analysis method employed in this study is descriptive qualitative. The research questions were addressed by applying the framework of taboo word types and functions proposed by Jay and the context of the situation proposed by Holmes, both of which fall under sociolinguistics theory. The findings show that taboo words are mainly used to express anger or frustration, especially in scenes involving unfair treatment or emotional outbursts. Some types of taboo words, such as epithets, cursing, profanity, slang, and insults or slurs, are closely tied to emotional release and conflict. Meanwhile, obscenity, vulgarity, and taboo appear in both serious and humorous contexts, depending on the context in which the taboo words are delivered. Additionally, scatology appears only in joking scenes. These patterns suggest that while some taboo word types only serve anger or frustration function, others are more flexible. Overall, the context plays a key role in shaping how and why taboo words are used in the movie. Keywords: taboo words, anger, frustration, joke, context of situation

Abstract

This study explores the metaphor of life in Colleen Hoover’s novel Reminders of Him, aiming to identify the types of linguistic metaphors and analyze the conceptual metaphors that underlie them. Based on Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory, which classifies metaphors into structural, ontological, and orientational categories, this study highlights the role of metaphor as a cognitive tool, not merely a stylistic device. A qualitative method was employed, with data collected using AntConc software by focusing on parts of the novel containing the word “life.” The Metaphor Identification Procedure was applied to identify linguistic metaphors, which were then categorized based on the word class of the lexical units that were used metaphorically. The results of this study show four types of linguistic metaphors involving the noun “life”: nominal, verbal, adjectival, and prepositional. These forms portray life as a physical object, a process, a possessed attribute, or a container. These linguistic metaphors reflect eight conceptual metaphors, including five ontological metaphors (life is ownership, life is a container, life is an entity, life is air, life is a place) and three structural metaphors (life is a machine, life is a journey, life is a challenge). The diversity of these conceptual metaphors illustrates the rich representation of life in the novel.
