Abstract

This study discusses the syntactic marker {-nya} in Indonesian, and aims at finding the answers to the three research questions; (i) what hosts can be appended by {-nya},(ii)what syntactic functions can be filled by {-nya}, and (iii) what is the meaning of {-nya}contextually. The data to support the analysis was collected from the source with the help of a data collection tool [antconc3.2.1w window2007]. Two theories are relevant to the discussion of {-nya}, namely; morphosyntactic theory that searched the occurrence of {-nya} in a text and discourse theory to discover the meaning of {-nya} contextually. The result of analysis showed three occurrence of {-nya}; pronoun clitics, determiner, and as adverbial formation. As a core argument {-nya} can be attached to the nasal verbs, passive verbs, zero intransitive verbs, and category of nouns, prepositions, and reflexive pronouns. As adverbial formation {-nya} is attached to the adjective, bound root, and is combined with {se-} to form confix {se-baik-nya}. As pronoun, {-nya} can serve as; Grammatical Subjects and Objects, Possessive determiner, Oblique Agent, Reflexive pronoun. As determiner it is always attached to the noun, forming nouns from verbs, and as an adverbial it can serve as an adjunct, conjunct, and disjunct. The meaning of {-nya} with pronominal category should be traced in the text and always refers to the third person singular. Keywords: syntactic markers, pronouns, argument, adverbial, discourse

Abstract

In trilingual kids’ story book entitled “Turtle and Dolphin” by Dunkle et al (2012), the English text has both Indonesian and Balinese equivalences. This study aims at revealing the translation procedures applied to the English text especially the activity verbs and also the correlation between the translation procedures and the translation shifts that happen as the result of translations. The English activity verbs as the data in this study are collected using documentation method, the analysis is done by applying descriptive qualitative method and the result is shown using the combination of informal and formal methods. The result shows that literal translation is the most frequent translation procedure applied to translate ST into Indonesian (91%) and Balinese (77%). However, there are several English activity verbs transferred into mental verbs, nouns, and prepositions in the TT. Furthermore, when literal translations are applied the shifts that appear are intra-system shifts (36%). When transpositions are applied, the shifts that appear are class shifts (100%). When modulations are applied the shifts that appear are intra-system shifts (60%). Lastly, when adaptations are applied, the shifts that appear are intra-system shifts (37, 5%).

Abstract

The research aimed at analyzing the equivalence between the source language and its translations based on the translation techniques proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). This research focused on the amplification and transposition techniques could be seen on the imperative sentences especially command. The research was conducted by using qualitative method. The data to support this research was taken from an Harry Potter’s novel entitled Harry Potter and The order of Phoenix” in English as source language (SL) and its translation into Indonesian novel as target language (TL). Library research and observation method were used in collecting of data. The technique of collecting data implemented by reading the novel and using note- taking. First step was taking the magazines then reading the novel to carefully understand how the source language (SL) in English were being translated into Indonesian translation in Target Language (TL). The second step was underlining the data of SL which were translated into TL then taking note those data that had been found into a paper or note book. The last step, the selected data were classified based on the objects investigated was techniques of translation. The instruments used were ball point and note book. The translator applied amplification and transposition to produce equivalences when transferring the meaning from the source language (SL) into target language (TL). Therefore, the overlapping translation could be minimized. Amplification had a role especially the addition of information. Some of data showed the phenomena when the detail information did not contain in the source language and the translator must be sensitive by putting the necessary information in target language. Meanwhile, transposition made a shift in translation as follows, structure shift, unit shift and class of shift. It occurred because of the different linguistics factor in SL into TL.

Abstract

This research was carried out based upon the habitual speaking attitude of Singaporeans in Singapore Colloquial English by adding discourse particles ah and lah. Data were gathered from Mothership YouTube channel in Mothership Hits the Streets section from January to December 2020. There were two objectives; finding out the types and explaining the assigned functions of discourse particles ah and lah of SCE found in Mothership videos. It was conducted through applying qualitative approach which observation, document analysis, discourse analysis, and descriptive-interpretative method were employed. Theories applied to this research were discourse particles classification by Wong (2004), roles of discourse particles by Low & Deterding (2003), and context of situation by Halliday & Hasan (1985). The results showed that four types of ah and three types of lah were used by Singaporeans as seen in the videos; perlocutionary ah, vocative ah, emphatic ah, ah as question marker, impositional lah, propositional lah, and persuasive lah.
