Abstract

The Mandalika tourism area in Central Lombok Regency has been designated as a Special Economic Zone (KEK), leading to rapid development through improved facilities and services, which in turn has significantly increased visitor numbers. While this growth has generated positive impacts, it also poses environmental challenges, particularly regarding sanitation. This study aims to examine tourist sanitation behavior in the KEK Mandalika, focusing on waste bin usage and wastewater management. Data were collected using a questionnaire based on a Likert scale, allowing for quantitative assessment and statistical analysis of behavioral variables. The results show that 59% of respondents demonstrated “Good” behavior in waste bin usage, while 41% were categorized as “Less Good.” In terms of wastewater management, 64% of respondents exhibited “Good” behavior, and 36% fell into the “Less Good” category. However, reporting damaged waste bin facilities and participation in wastewater management programs remain insufficient, as these practices are rarely carried out by visitors.

Abstract

The coastal waters of West Sekotong possess significant potential in fisheries and marine resources. Seagrass is one of the key biotas contributing nutrients to support the fertility of surrounding waters. This study, conducted from May to July 2021 aimed to identify seagrass species and assess the health status of seagrass bed based on percentage cover and ecological indices. The research method used was purposive sampling with three research stations and systematic random sampling with transects. Based on the research that has been conducted, the following results were obtained seven seagrass species from two families. Hydrocharitaceae families (Enhalus acoroides, Thalassia hemprichii, Halophila ovalis, Halophila minor) and Cymodoceaceae families (Cymodocea rotundata, Cymodocea serrulata, Halodule pinifolia). The highest species density was H. pinifolia (119.47 ind/m²), with the highest important value index at station 1 (H. pinifolia 89%), station 2 (T. hemprichii 205%), and station 3 (E. acoroides 300%). Station 1 had the highest diversity and uninformity index, while station 3 was dominated by single species. Seagrass cover ranged from 31–48.33%, indicating unhealthy conditions, although environmental parameters remained within suitable ranges for seagrass growth.

Abstract

Lombok Island, particularly the Kawasan Ekonomi Khusus (KEK) Mandalika, has rapidly developed as a global tourist destination, attracting a significant annual increase in visitor numbers. This growth necessitates the provision of adequate facilities, especially sanitation facilities, which play a crucial role in enhancing visitor comfort and experience as well as supporting sustainable tourism principles. This study aims to identify the availability of sanitation facilities and analyze sanitation quality at KEK Mandalika through a quantitative approach. Data collection was conducted using checklists to evaluate facility conditions and laboratory tests to measure water quality parameters such as pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and salinity. The results indicate that several sanitation facilities have not met comfort standards and require improvement. Water quality based on tested parameters showed pH within normal ranges, TDS exceeding quality standards, and salinity tests indicating brackish water with low salinity. This research highlights an urgent need to enhance facilities, particularly those that are disability-friendly, to support inclusive comfort and accessibility, as well as to improve clean water quality. With such facility improvements, KEK Mandalika is expected to maintain its reputation as an environmentally friendly, safe, and high-quality tourist destination. The findings also offer recommendations for infrastructure enhancement and easier access, which ultimately can minimize the environmental impact of tourism activities.

Abstract

The Mandalika Coastal Area, located in Central Lombok Regency, is a row of beaches and bays that have a large coral reef ecosystem and intertidal zone area. The increasing growth of activities on the Mandalika coast will affect the life of the coral reef ecosystem, one of which is the concentration of heavy metals that exceeds the quality standard limits which will be very dangerous for coral reefs. This study aims to determine the concentration of the heavy metals lead and cadmium in Porites lutea coral reefs in Kuta, Tanjung Aan and Gerupuk beaches. Research data collection (field and laboratory) was carried out in May 2023. Coral reef preparation was carried out at the Advanced and Analytical Biology Laboratory, FMIPA, University of Mataram and measurements of heavy metal content were carried out at the Environmental Laboratory, the West Nusa Tenggara Province Environment and Forestry Service. Measurement and calculation of heavy metal content using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The results showed that the concentrations of the heavy metals lead and cadmium in Porites lutea coral reefs are < 0.0005 mg/L and < 0.0001 mg/L, which are still below the quality standards (PPRI No.22 of 2021 concerning Sea water Wuality Standards on Marine Biota). The Bioaccumulation Factors (BAF) value in all samples of P. lutea coral in Mandalika coastal waters is 0.00 mg/L, this shows that there is no accumulation of heavy metals in P. lutea coral.
