Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of transportation on changes in total protein levels in Bali cattle after a trip to the Pesanggaran Slaughterhouse (RPH) Denpasar. Transportation can lead to stress and dehydration. To diagnose the occurrence of stress can be done by biochemical tests. The biochemical test carried out in this study was to measure the levels of total protein in the blood. The object used is Bali cattle that have not been rested after transportation as many as 20 heads at the Denpasar Pesanggaran Slaughterhouse. Blood was taken through the auricular vein and put into a vacutainer tube containing a gel separator to separate serum from blood. Blood serum samples were taken to the Bali Provincial Health Laboratory for immediate examination of total protein levels using the Photometer 5010V5+ machine. The total protein content of the examined samples had the lowest level of 5.8 g/dL and the highest 8.5 g/dL with an average of 7.5 g/dL. From the results of the study, the total protein content of Bali cattle after transportation was considered normal, this indicated that there was no effect of transportation on the total protein content.

Abstract

Dental disease is a problem that is common in Indonesia, and it affects around 96.58% of the population. The use of chemical drugs that can cause side effects in patients makes people start other alternative treatments by using natural ingredients namely meniran (Phyllanthus niruri L). This study examines the liver histopathology of Wistar rats with chronic apical periodontitis after administration of intracanal drugs. This study looked at the effects of a medicament paste on rats for a period of seven, fourteen, and twenty-one days. Experimental animals were adapted to chronic apical periodontitis by inducing Enterococcus faecalis into right maxillary molars for 21 days.On day 22, all drug treatment groups were opened with GIC and given the prescribed drug treatment, and then closed again with GIC. The observed variables were the presence of inflammatory cell infiltration, hyperemia, and necrosis. Data were analyzed using a non-parametric statistical Kruskal-Wallis test, and if there was a significant difference, it was continued with the Mann-Whitney test. The results of the study showed that there was no significant difference between the three treatment groups (P1, P2, P3) and there was a significant difference between P0 and the other two groups. However, the results of statistical analysis of necrosis observed by histopathology in the liver showed that there was no significant difference between P0, P1, P2 and P3 treatments (P>0.05).From the research results, it can be concluded that administration of meniran leaves ethanolic extract can improve liver histopathology in rats with chronic apical periodontitis.

Abstract

Indonesia is one of the developing countries that has a high number of smokers and cigarette production. Cigarettes are not only harmful to the smoker, but also harmful to those around them who inhale the smoke. Organ damage caused by free radicals from cigarette smoke can be repaired with antioxidants. One of the plants in Indonesia that contains antioxidants is sappan wood (Caesalpinia sappan linn). This study aims to determine the effect of sappan wood extract on the histopathological picture of male mice (Mus musculus) exposed to conventional cigarette smoke for 30 days. This study used kidney samples of male mice, adults aged 35-45 days and body weight between 30-35g totaling 24 individuals. Mice were divided into 4 groups, each group consisted of 6 mice. The experimental animals were isolated on the 30th day, then the kidney histopathological examination of mice was performed. The results of histopathological observations of male mice's kidneys showed varying degrees of severity. The results of Kruskal Wallis' analysis of histopathological examination data were scored, showing a significant difference (p<0.05) for both necrotizing and inflammatory lesions. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that administration of secang wood extract at a dose of 30 mg/30 g BW of mice/day and 60 mg/30 g BW of mice/day can improve kidney lesions of male mice due to exposure to cigarette smoke, based on the reduction of necrotizing and inflammatory lesions. Further research is needed with increasing doses and longer time to determine the effective dose of secang wood extract in reducing kidney damage due to exposure to cigarette smoke in mice.

Abstract

Exposure to cigarette smoke can increase the risk of coronary heart disease due to the free radicals generated. One of the plants in Indonesia that contains antioxidants is sappan wood. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving secang wood extract (Caesalpinia sappan Linn) on the histopathological picture of male mice (Mus musculus) after exposure to conventional cigarette smoke. This study used 24 samples of adult male mice aged 35-45 days with body weight between 30-35 grams obtained from a mouse farm in Gianyar, Bali. The sample was divided into 4 treatments with 6 replications, namely negative control without sappan extract treatment and exposure to cigarette smoke, positive control with 2 cigarette smoke exposure a day, 2 cigarette smoke exposure a day and 30 mg/head dose of sappan wood extract. and the treatment was exposed to cigarette smoke as much as 2 cigarettes a day and administration of sappan wood extract at a dose of 60 mg/head, for 30 days. On the 31st day, the experimental animals were sacrificed to take heart muscle and processed into histopathological preparations. The examination was carried out based on the presence of congestion and inflammation lesions. The severity of the lesions was scored as mild, moderate and severe. Observational data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric statistical test and continued with the Mann-Whitney test if there was a significant difference. The results showed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) between mice exposed to cigarette smoke and mice given sappan wood extract after exposure to cigarette smoke. It can be concluded that the administration of sappan wood extract at a dose of 30mg/mouse and 60mg/mouse can improve the heart lesions of male mice after exposure to conventional cigarette smoke. Further research is needed on the use of sappan wood extract with different doses in order to obtain more comprehensive results in treating heart damage after exposure to cigarette smoke.

Abstract

Histomoniasis is a protozoan parasitic disease caused by Histomonas meleagridis. Clinical signs in histomoniasis develop 6-12 days post-infection, and are most common at 11 days post-infection, and include lethargy, emaciation, unkempt hair, yellow diarrhea, sulphur-like stools in the late stages of the disease when liver function is impaired. severe, and bile pigment is excreted through the kidneys. Lesions are observed mainly in the liver and cecum. Typical liver lesions are described as necrosis that is yellow to gray, green, or red. The size of the lesions varies widely, but is usually 1–2 cm in diameter, and may coalesce to form larger areas of necrosis. The cecum is most often enlarged bilaterally, with thickening of the cecum walls. The diagnosis can be made on the basis of clinical signs and characteristic lesions of the liver and/or cecum. A well-developed target lesion in the liver +/- cecum lesion is pathognomonic for this disease. Since no approved chemotherapy product is available for the treatment of histomoniasis, control measures are focused on prevention. There are no approved chemotherapy products available for the treatment of histomoniasis, so control measures are focused on prevention. To prevent the occurrence of histomoniasis, the best prevention that can be done is to apply good sanitation in livestock cages.

Abstract

Calcium is a macromineral that plays an important role in the health, production, and reproduction of animals. Calcium requirements in cattle depend on breed, age and parity, path physiological status, body condition score, gestation status, and lactation. During the periparturient period, the cows struggle to maintain calcium homeostasis, and if it is failed, the animal will experience hypocalcemia. As is known hypocalcemia as a predisposing factor for a number of reproductive disorders and infectious diseases. This study aims to investigate changes in blood calcium levels in Bali cattle during the periparturient period. The object of research is nine months pregnant Bali cattle and in good health, kept in cage in a horticultural farming environment. Three ml blood samples were taken through the jugular vein three times, namely in the last three weeks of gestation, on day parturition, and three weeks after calving. Blood samples were processed using the wet digestion method, and calcium concentrations were measured using the flame atomic absorption spectrometric method. The results showed an average blood calcium concentrations of 9.57±1.26 mg/dl, 4.11±0.63 mg/dl, and 8.32±1.23 mg/dl, respectively. Statistical analysis showed blood calcium levels during delivery experienced a very significant decrease. We find new evidence regarding the physiological data of Bali cattle, that at the time of parturition they experienced subclinical hypocalcemia. We concluded that there was a fluctuating change in blood calcium concentrations, where the normal value in the last three weeks of gestation experienced a significant decrease at the parturition and increased after three weeks of calving but has not yet reached the initial condition.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal helminth parasites in animals can be zoonotic-parasitic. This study aims to determine the efficacy of polyherbal oil formulations against intestinal worm parasites of Kintamani dogs. This study used 24 Kintamani Dogs aged 3-6 months which were kept by releasing them into the wild. The anthelmintic potency of polyherbal oil formulations was determined by measuring Eggs Per Gram of feces (EPG), using the Modified Stoll Dilution method before and seven days after treatment. P0 as control was given a placebo, while groups P1, P2, and P3 were given Polyherbal oil at doses of 300, 600, and 900 mg/kg body weight for three consecutive days. The results showed that there was a decrease in the EPG value sequentially P0, P1, P2, and P3 which was -4%, 23.1%, 66.7%, and 81.3%. Based on the identification of worm eggs, it was shown that the efficacy of polyherbal oil against Toxocara canis decreased EPG at P1, P2, and P3 by 26.09%, 73.33%, and 86.08%. Against Ancylostomata spp respectively at P1, P2 and P3 caused a decrease in EPG of 17.39%, 52.63%, and 72.0%. Against Strongyl spp worms respectively at P1, P2 and P3 caused a decrease in EPG by 16.67%, 58.82%, and 73.68%. Statistical analysis showed that polyherbal oil had a significant effect (P<0.05) on the decrease in EPG. We can conclude that the polyherbal oil formulation has vermicidal efficacy against intestinal worm parasites in Kintamani dog puppies.
