Abstract

Dental and oral health is a part of body health that cannot be separated from one another because it will affect the overall health of the body. Teeth are one part of the body that functions to chew, speak and maintain the shape of the face, so it is important to maintain healthy teeth as early as possible so they can last a long time in the oral cavity. Several epidemiological studies have shown that oral hygiene and gingival status of various degrees of severity are commonly found in children and adolescents. Teenagers often experience health problems, one of which is dental and oral hygiene problems. School students are the right group for health promotion efforts. This educational activity aims to increase knowledge about dental and oral health and to change individual and/or community behavior in the health sector. The method implemented in this educational activity is to use the online method which is carried out with 57 students at the UNP Padang Laboratory Development High School. The results showed an increase in the mean score from the pretest results of 6.13 and the posttest average score of 8.32, so it can be concluded that educational activities through online media can increase the knowledge of SMA Development Laboratory UNP Padang students in maintaining oral health from an early age. Furthermore, counseling activities using this method can be an option for health workers, especially dentists so that they can reach more remote areas.

Abstract

Background: Every canine is pulled during fixed orthodontic treatment, whether using an elastomeric chain short, elastomeric chain long, closed coil spring, or open coil spring, tends to cause pain for the patient. Which of the four components of the active device is the best in terms of the pain effect felt by the patient. Pain is a symptom that underlies most patients’ rejection of proposed treatment plans. The success of treatment cannot be separated from factors of relief of pain in general, and failure to address these factors may leave patients fearful of returning. This study aimed to compare pain intensity during canine extraction using closed coil spring niTi, open coil spring niTi, elastomeric chain short, and elastomeric chain long in fixed orthodontic treatment standard edgewise. Methods: This study is a longitudinal experimental research. A total of 16 research subjects participated in this study. The data analysis technique for this research is pain intensity analysis based on the time when the canine tooth is retracted using a tool elastomeric chain short, elastomeric chain long, closed coil spring, open coil spring, using the VAS questionnaire on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days using non-parametric Kruskal Wallis statistical tests to find out whether there are significant differences between 3 different times on 4 different types of equipment. Results: There is no difference in intensity pain after canine retraction using closed coil spring, open coil spring, elastomeric chain short, or elastomeric chain long devices in standard edgewise fixed treatment based on VAS on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days. There is no difference in intensity pain after canine retraction using a closed coil spring appliance in standard edgewise fixed treatment based on VAS on the 1st, 3rd, and 7th days. There are differences in the intensity of pain after retraction of the canine tooth using an elastomeric chain short, elastomeric chain long appliance in standard edgewise fixed treatment based on VAS on the 1st and 3rd days. Conclusion: There are differences in pain intensity during canine extraction using closed coil spring niTi, open coil spring niTi, elastomeric chain short, and elastomeric chain long in fixed orthodontic treatment standard edgewise.

Abstract

Children's dental health is very important to ensure the child's nutritional status, speaking ability and attractive appearance. Nutrition, diet and dental health in children are closely related, especially in children who are in the growth and development phase. Good quality and proper nutrition is very important to support dental health. Likewise, dental health is also important for adequate nutritional intake. If the teeth and mouth are healthy, then nutritional intake will be optimal, and if nutrition is optimal then the growth and development of the teeth and mouth will also be optimal. As many as 89% of children in Indonesia suffer from dental disease. A number of surveys show that more than a third of the toddler population has experienced toothache and one sixth of them have had at least one tooth extracted. The growth and development of teeth is influenced by nutrition. Healthy dentition will occur if all nutritional elements are available in sufficient quantities. The aim of the activity: to provide education to young children about the importance of nutrition for the growth and development of teeth and mouth. The activity method used is the tell-show-do method with presentations using power point media, posters, models of teeth and toothbrushes, as well as examination of children's teeth and mouths. This method is one of the most appropriate methods for providing education to early childhood. Results of the activity: increased knowledge of children and the emergence of a sense of courage when having a dental examination by a dentist. Conclusion: This activity has a positive impact on young children because children understand better that there is a connection between nutrition and oral health.

Abstract

Oral health issues are of high concern in Indonesia, where the majority of the population faces challenges in this aspect. There is a significant prevalence of dental caries in young children, signaling the complexity of this health issue at the population level. This issue is linked to proper brushing behavior, which is practiced by only a small percentage of the Indonesian population. As a result, children should be educated about oral health, particularly proper brushing techniques, from an early age. The Fones technique, which combines horizontal and circular movements, is one effective technique. This technique is effective for cleaning teeth and maintaining gum health. This educational activity aims to provide the students at State Elementary School (SDN) 23 Marapalam Padang with advice on how to use the Fones teeth brushing technique. Educational activity was carried out on January 16, 2023 with a total of 87 students. The stages of implementing this activity are preparation by conducting a preliminary study to the school, the implementation of counseling, namely oral health education with PowerPoint presentation media, posters, dental phantoms and toothbrushes followed by correct tooth brushing practices accompanied by the lecturers and students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University. There was a significant increase in students' understanding of healthy teeth, the benefits of brushing teeth, brushing time, and increasing children's skills in practicing toothbrushing with good and correct Fones techniques after education was provided. In order to maintain and improve oral health, it is suggested that this activity be repeated on a regular basis with different topics to increase students' knowledge of oral health science.

Abstract

Phosphorus is a vital mineral required for the proper mineralization of bones and teeth, particularly during childhood development. Deficiency in phosphorus intake can lead to delayed dental development, including the eruption of permanent teeth, which may result in oral health complications such as malocclusion and increased risk of dental caries. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 children from SD N 15 Koto Lalang, Padang City. Participants were categorized into two groups based on the eruption status of their permanent canines: normal eruption and delayed eruption. Phosphorus intake was measured through dietary surveys, and statistical analysis, including the Mann-Whitney test, was applied to assess the relationship between phosphorus intake and tooth eruption timing. The median phosphorus intake in the normal eruption group was 597.30 mg, significantly higher than the 440.00 mg observed in the delayed eruption group (p = 0.000). The interquartile range (IQR) for the delayed group was narrower, suggesting a more uniform phosphorus deficiency. In conclusion, phosphorus deficiency is a significant factor contributing to delayed eruption of permanent teeth in children. Ensuring adequate phosphorus intake through proper nutrition is crucial for timely dental development and the prevention of long-term oral health issues. Further studies should explore the interaction of phosphorus with other micronutrients to provide a comprehensive understanding of its role in dental health.

Abstract

Teledentistry is an examination and consultation of patients to the dentist without going through face-to-face visits, but with the help of an online application. The purpose of the activity is to help and facilitate Co-ass students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University, to fulfill the requirements for oral diagnosis via online (teledentistry) during the covid 19 pandemic. The activity is carried out in the form of examination/screening of patients carried out by Co-ass students whom Hospital Precept accompanies at the Faculty of Dentistry, Andalas University (Lecturer). Activities to be carried out consist of counseling, coordinator, mentoring, and monitoring of implementation and evaluation. The results of this activity can meet the patient's need for dental and oral examinations and expand access to dental care. Dental and oral health is essential for every individual, especially for carrying out functions such as eating, speaking, aesthetics, and feeling comfortable throughout the day. The Covid-19 pandemic limits the community's social conditions, including their need to get dental and oral services from dentists. In addition, dentistry is one of the jobs most at risk of contracting Covid-19 from patients. Through teledentistry activities, a dentist takes anamnesis to patients, clinical examinations are carried out through consultation through pictures and videos, diagnosis as initial information in planning further treatment, and supportive care such as patient education.
