Abstract

Histology practicum, as one of the compulsory practicum courses, offers a great opportunity to practice various aspects of science process skills through microscopic tissue observation activities, identification of cell and tissue structures, and analysis of tissue functions in organisms. This study aims to analyze the science process skills biology education students through histology practicum activities. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach with a survey method to analyze the science process skills of biology education students through histology practicum activities. Data collection in this study used three main techniques, namely science process skills tests, direct observation, and analysis of practicum report documents. Furthermore, the data were analyzed descriptively quantitatively using descriptive statistics to describe the profile of students' science process skills. Analysis per aspect revealed that students had good skills in the aspects of observing (78.50%), classifying (76.33%), interpreting data (71.67%), applying concepts (73.25%), and communicating results (73.40%), which indicates that histology practicum is effective in developing basic science process skills. However, the aspects of formulating hypotheses (58.17%) and planning experiments (54.83%) were still in the sufficient category, indicating that students experienced difficulties in integrated science process skills that require higher-order thinking skills. The findings this study provide important implications for the development of more comprehensive histology practicum learning strategies, including the integration of inquiry approaches, the use of continuous formative assessment, the application of differentiated learning, and strengthening the connection between theory and practice to optimize the development of all aspects of science process skills of prospective biology teachers.

Abstract

Ornamental plant cultivation can be widely beneficial in boosting community economic growth. The ornamental plant business is part of creative economic development and is one way to increase farmers' income towards better purchasing power. Ornamental plant cultivation is considered to have high economic potential, as it can be done on limited land with relatively small capital and a wide market. This community service activity aims to improve the skills and economic independence of members of the Berkah Tani 2 Women Farmers Group (KWT) through training and assistance in ornamental plant cultivation. The program will be implemented in May 2025 using a participatory approach (Participatory Rural Appraisal) that emphasizes active community involvement in every stage of the activity. The stages of this activity are activity preparation, activity implementation, and evaluation, where evaluation is conducted through interviews and observations after the activity is carried out. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' knowledge, as seen from their ability to explain the cultivation stages more accurately, an increase in skills, as shown by the success of most participants in practicing plant propagation and maintenance independently, and an increase in motivation, as seen from the members' initiative to increase the number of plants and start planning simple marketing. This activity is expected to become a model for sustainable horticulture-based community empowerment.

Abstract

Higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) are crucial in science education, yet students often struggle to master them, particularly in complex topics such as vibrations and waves. This study aimed to evaluate the HOTS performance of 165 eighth-grade students from five schools in Purbolinggo Sub-district, East Lampung, using a two-tier multiple-choice test analyzed through the Rasch Measurement Model. The test consisted of 12 items, each with a content question and a reasoning tier, adapted from Treagust (1988) and validated through expert judgment. Rasch analysis indicated that most students demonstrated low HOTS ability, especially in the creating domain (C6), involving generating novel ideas or solutions. In contrast, analyzing (C4) and evaluating (C5) were relatively easier but still reflected limited mastery. The highest difficulty appeared in questions requiring divergent thinking and complex synthesis. Item fit statistics showed good instrument validity (person reliability = 0.93; item reliability = 0.83). These findings highlight the importance of implementing learning strategies that foster creativity and synthesis, such as problem-based learning or project-based approaches. The study was limited to one geographic area, which may restrict generalizability. Future research should explore broader contexts and incorporate qualitative data to deepen understanding of HOTS development in science.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of gamification based digital learning media on interest in learning evolution in increasing students' learning motivation. This study uses a quantitative quasi-experimental approach with a nonequivalent control group design. This study consists of three types of variables, gamification based digital learning media, interest in learning evolution, student characteristics. The study population and sample students in class XI IPA SMA Muhammadiyah 01  Surakarta. The results of the study showed a significant increase in learning interest in the experimental group compared to the control group. After being given certain treatments, the experimental group showed a much higher average posttest score, which was 85.13, while the control group only reached 71.45. This indicates that the treatment given to the experimental group succeeded in significantly increasing their learning interest. All indicators used to measure learning interest, such as attention, relevance, self-confidence, and satisfaction, also showed a higher increase in the experimental group. Research proves that digital technology and gamification mechanisms can effectively overcome learning challenges in abstract materials such as evolution. This makes a substantive contribution to building bridges between gamification theory, educational technology, and biology learning practices.

Abstract

This research aligns with UMS RIP Theme 5 concerning the improvement of education and learning quality. Socioscientific Blended Project-Based Learning (SSI-PjBL) is a learning model that actively engages students through online and face-to-face activities, including reading, discussion, experimentation, data analysis, and problem-solving related to socioscientific issues in society. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the SSI-PjBL model in improving the higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) of biology education students at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UMS. This study employed a quasi-experimental design involving two groups of 40 students, consisting of an experimental group (20 students) taught using the SSI-PjBL model and a control group (20 students) taught using the conventional Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model. HOTS indicators measured in this study included critical thinking, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving skills. Data were collected using HOTS-based pretest and posttest essay instruments. Data analysis was conducted using hypothesis testing and effect size analysis. Prior to hypothesis testing, assumption tests including normality and homogeneity tests were performed. Since the data were normally distributed, independent sample t-test was used as a parametric statistical test. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ HOTS in the experimental class compared to the control class. Furthermore, the effect size was calculated using Cohen’s effect size formula and produced a value of 3,190, which was categorized as high according to Cohen’s criteria. These findings indicate that the SSI-PjBL model has a strong effect on improving students’ higher-order thinking skills and can be considered an effective learning approach to support 21st-century biology education.
