Abstract

This study aims to obtain an overview of fractional problem solving in terms of mathematical ability in class VII students of SMP Negeri 3 Pamona Timur. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects consisted of three students with high, medium and low abilities. Data collection techniques in this study were written tests and interviews. The results of this study indicate that the subject's ability to solve fraction problems according to Polya's stages are as follows: (1) the stages of understanding the problem of high, medium, and low ability subjects read repetitive problems, mention information that is known based on declarative sentences and information asked based on imperative sentences or question of the problem appropriately. (2) the stage of preparing a problem solving plan for subjects with high, medium, and low abilities in making a problem solving plan, namely stating the information asked to make a mathematical model in the form of adding and subtracting fractions based on what is known correctly. (3) the stage of carrying out the problem-solving plan, high-ability subjects carry out the problem-solving plan in accordance with what has been planned correctly, while subjects with moderate and low ability carry out the problem-solving plan according to what was planned beforehand but not quite right. (4) the stage of re-examining the results of solving high-skilled subjects did not write down how to check answers, but when interviewed by researchers, high-skilled subjects were able to re-check the answers that had been written down. Meanwhile, subjects with medium and low abilities were sure of their answers and did not re-check their answers, because they did not understand how to re-check their answers

Abstract

This research aims to obtain a description of the use of mathematics in the activities of carpenters and masons in the process of building a house. The subjects of this research were two builders who were carrying out construction in the village of Tokala Atas. The two craftsmen chosen as research subjects consisted of a masons and a carpenter. The research method used was qualitative with a descriptive type of research carried out in the village of Tokala Atas. The data collection techniques used were observation and interviews. Observations were made while the builders were building the house. Interview techniques were used to explore the data that had been obtained when the observations were made. The results of the research show that carpenters and masons use mathematical concepts in building houses, namely the Pythagorean concept when forming foundation angles and measuring the sloping sides of roofs. The concept of alignment when measuring foundation bow plank strings, measuring brick laying benchmark strings and measuring frame heights. The concept of comparison is used when measuring into the foundation and when determining the distance between floor girders. The concept of flat construction is used when making sloping reinforcement frames, making piles and forming wooden joints. The concept of perpendicular lines is used when adjusting the straightness of poles, sills and roof posts. Arithmetic concepts are used when calculating zinc and teal requirements. The mathematical concepts contained in house buildings made by carpenters are roof shape: roof shape, rice wrapper and wall shape: betel stacking shape, plate stacking and lengthwise.

Abstract

This study aims to profile the completion of HOTS questions on the conical surface area material by SMP Negeri 1 Kasimabar students based on differentiated cognitive levels. This type of research is qualitative research. The subjects of this study were 2 students of different genders taken from class IX SMP Negeri 1 Kasimbar. The research subjects were one student with high mathematics ability with female gender (LN), and one student with high mathematics ability with male gender (MS). The data collection techniques in this study were written tests and in-depth interviews. The test given to the research subjects was a HOTS problem test on cone surface area material at the cognitive level of analyzing (C4). The results of this study indicate that the profile of solving HOTS problems on the surface area of the cone by students with high mathematics ability LN at the cognitive level of analyzing is correct, because the subject can distinguish information, organize by creating a structure in systematic problem solving and attribute by making conclusions based on the information obtained very well. While the profile of HOTS problem solving of cone surface area by MS high mathematics ability students at the cognitive level of analyzing is good, because MS subjects are also able to distinguish information and organize by creating structures in systematic problem solving, it's just that at the stage of attributing MS subjects are still lacking, because at the stage of attributings

Abstract

Students' errors in solving mathematical problems need to be analyzed in depth so that teachers can choose the right way to anticipate the repetition of the same errors. This study aims to reveal the types of errors made by students in solving word problems on the topic of proportion. This study is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The subjects involved were two seventh grade students, male and female. The results of this study indicate that based on Newman's error analysis, male subjects mainly made reading errors, errors in understanding the problem, transformation errors, and writing the final answer that did not include a conclusion. While female subjects made errors in understanding the problem, choosing the operation used, and writing the conclusion sentence in the final answers. The results of this study can help students understand the errors made so that the errors are not repeated and can be input for teachers in improving the learning process.

Abstract

Student-centered learning is able to bring out the creative and innovative thinking of students which are needed to face the twenty-first century's challenges. A mindset that can bring out the creative potential in everyone is Design Thinking. The current study employed a theoretical perspective from design thinking with problem-solving activities consisting of 5 stages, namely emphatize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. In-depth observations and interviews were conducted to identify problems faced by high school students at SMA Negeri 6 Palu. Sample selection was based on criteria of extreme right sample and extreme left sample. The results obtained in the form of Interactive media in the form of Match-ups as discussion material and gamification on cell material were designed to be used in the learning process.

Abstract

Metacognitive skills are increasingly acknowledged as a decisive determinant of mathematical proficiency, as they enable students to plan, monitor, and evaluate their cognitive strategies in problem-solving. However, empirical studies rarely focus on how these skills are exhibited by students with low self-efficacy, a population particularly vulnerable to persistent underachievement in mathematics. Addressing this gap, the present study provides novel insights into the metacognitive functioning of low self-efficacy students when engaging with problem-solving tasks, specifically in the context of the Pythagorean Theorem. The study aimed to describe the manifestation of metacognitive skills among junior high school students with low self-efficacy and analyze their problem-solving strategies and underlying thought processes. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, participants were identified as low self-efficacy students using a standardized questionnaire. Data were obtained from self-efficacy questionnaires, problem-solving tasks, and semi-structured interviews, and subsequently analyzed through metacognitive indicators embedded within Polya’s problem-solving framework. Findings indicate that while low self-efficacy students exhibited consistent awareness and evaluative monitoring, their regulatory skills were less developed, particularly in the reviewing stage of problem-solving. Although planning and assessment strategies were evident, frequent errors required iterative adjustments before arriving at correct solutions. These results highlight the intertwined relationship between metacognition and affective-motivational factors, suggesting that mathematics instruction should explicitly integrate self-efficacy enhancement with metacognitive training. The study contributes to advancing the theoretical discourse on mathematics learning and offers practical implications for designing instructional models that accommodate learners with diverse motivational profiles.
