Abstract

This research aims to uncover the multiple identities of 40 blind people and develop a model of their impression management that may be different from the impression management of nondisabled people. Blind people as subjects of this study are those who experience blindness in adulthood but were able-bodied before. Changes in physical conditions are followed by psychological changes that affect the way they communicate with their social environment, which is marked by impression management efforts. Using an interpretive perspective, more specifically a dramaturgical approach relying largely on observation as its method, the study reveals that the blind’s impression management is related to their self-confidence. The lower self-confidence they possess, the higher effort of impression management they make. The blind’s impression management is conducted in two strategies: first, by not using a personal front like black eyeglasses and a white stick; and secondly, by involving a performance team. These findings reinforce the distinction between the blind and the able-bodied people in their impression management. The nondisabled people usually use the personal front when managing the impression on the front stage. Based on finding that the blind’s impression management is distinctive in nature, this study has enriched Goffman's dramaturgical theory.

Abstract

During life-threatening situations such as the Covid-19 pandemic, disinformation is rife. While people project their affective aspects into understanding the situation, their fear of Covid-19 interferes with their logical and reasonable assessment of disinformation. Less credible information such as rumors becomes reliable for some people. This study aims to map the disinformation category based on the Ministry of Communication and Information report from January to March 2020. There are 359 hoaxes with five categories and 30 sub-categories. This study uses qualitative content analysis as a method. The study results revealed that most of the disinformation during the Covid-19 pandemic was related to the spread of hoaxes on health issues. This research implies that several recommendations are made to respond to the urgency of handling disinformation during Covid-19 in Indonesia, such as initiating digital literacy and media literacy in the national education system.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted educational communication, as traditional teaching and learning have been replaced by online digital teaching and learning. Thus, teachers must adapt quickly to new technology to meet the lesson objectives and successfully deliver their lessons. This study explores teachers’ adaptation experience throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Data was gathered in Mutiara Bunda Elementary School, an inclusive private school in Bandung with religious education at its core. In-depth interviews and introspection were conducted with four Islamic education teachers across grades. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings revealed that teachers went through five overlapping stages: confusion, trial and error, capacity building, adaptation, and efforts to find new solutions. However, different challenges were faced by each teacher according to the grades they taught. Even though teachers had finally adapted and transformed the teaching and learning experience, traditional face-to-face communication was still preferred by 1st to 3rd-grade teachers to deliver the lessons effectively. Lack of the teachers’ IT skills to deliver the lessons to develop the students’ character, inexperience in online teaching, and the students’ low motivation to learn through the digital platform clearly constitute the main obstacle in this religious, educational process.

Kata Kunci : Elemen Kota, Kota Bandung, Perkembangan Kota ABSTRACT The development and form of the physical structure of a city can be known through changes in the elements of the city as forming urban space. These elements are physical and non-physical elements. Physical elements include transportation facilities, markets, government centers, open spaces, centers of worship, settlements and so on, while non-physical elements are humans with all their activities. The development of Bandung City is in accordance with Branch's theory, namely the development of the city which is strongly influenced by internal situations and conditions. The strategic location of the city of Bandung which is in the middle of Priangan greatly affects the development of the city of Bandung because it has strategic value to the surrounding areas. The development of the city of Bandung can now be seen in the downtown area, where there is an increase in the physical spatial development of the city, the use of urban space and city activities such as in the trade, settlement, education, tourism and industrial sectors. Keywords : Bandung City, City Development, Elements of City

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the communication experience of victims of online gender-based violence and the healing process from the trauma they experienced. The main research questions are how victims experience violence online, what motives encourage perpetrators to commit violence from the victim’s perspective, the meaning of the communication experience, and the victim’s process of healing the traumatic experience. In this qualitative study, phenomenological methods and symbolic interaction theory were employed. The research subjects are women victims of online gender-based violence cases. Informants were selected through a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that most cases of threats of spreading intimate photos or videos were experienced by victims when they asked for a breakup or did not follow the wishes of the perpetrator. Victims of violence in the online realm are also vulnerable to multiple layers of violence. The video is used as a tool for the perpetrator so that the victim does not refuse to have sex with the perpetrator. The impact experienced by the victim is psychological loss, social isolation, and limited mobility. The three motives behind the above cases are relational, sextortion or extortion, and unknown motives. The meanings obtained from the communication experience of victims are shame, disgrace, loss of identity, feeling tarnished, and having mistrust of the opposite sex. The victims used various ways to heal themselves from the trauma, namely getting closer to God, telling stories to friends, and consulting psychologists.

Abstract

Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) had been the state media during the New Order era. However, since the fall of that regime in 1998, followed by the ratification of the Broadcasting Law Number 32 of 2002, RRI’s status changed to a public broadcasting institution (LPP). The change requires an organizational adaptation process which is not easy in practice. This study finds that communication can be both a driving factor and an obstacle to the adaptation process within the RRI organization. This research aims to explore the operationalization of communication in the adaptation process of the RRI and reveal how the flow of communication builds the relationship between members of the RRI organization; how organizational communication works in the learning process within the organization; and the dynamics of organizational learning in the adaptation process of the RRI organization. The results indicate that the dynamics of communication flows affect the organization’s communication climate. Meanwhile, organizational communication operates in several ways, namely: communication is a means to acquire as well as to conceal knowledge among RRI employees; communication helps the members of the organization understand a phenomenon from different perspectives; communication flows affect the distribution of communications; communication can be an accelerator as well as a barrier to organizational learning abilities. This study suggests further research on the role of communication to promote the internalization values of an organization into strategic decisions and concrete actions and the research on the roles of organizational culture and local culture in organizational adaptation.

Abstract

The meeting between President Jokowi and Minister of Defense Prabowo at a dinner on January 5 2024, is suspected of Jokowi's political neutrality in the 2024 presidential election which is increasingly being questioned. This issue of partiality has been widely reported by online media, one of which is Tempo.co. The news selection was chosen on 5 - 7 January 2024 with the consideration that at that time the third presidential candidate debate would be held on 7 January 2024. So, the momentum of Jokowi and Prabowo's dinner was allegedly a form of covert support from President Jokowi for the presidential candidate Prabowo who will face the debate. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a constructivist paradigm. Researchers framed news about Jokowi and Prabowo's dinner on Tempo.co using Robert N Entman's framing analysis method. The results of this research show that Tempo.co framed the issue of partiality in the 2024 presidential election in the Jokowi and Prabowo dinner news by reporting balanced information. This is proven by the existence of news information that contains pro and con parties in this report. This also shows that Tempo.co strives to maintain neutral news balance and has implemented Bill Kovach's journalistic elements of broadcasting comprehensive and proportional news.
