Abstract

The dynamics of Indonesia-Malaysia relations are influenced by the political growth of the two countries. Since the beginning of the Independence Era, there have been many ups and downs between the two countries. The recent ‘conflict’ centred on cultural issues, more specifically on the claims of certain cultural features such as songs, dances, batik, and cuisine. This study explained the reality of online media development in both countries, especially those related to Indonesian culture in Malaysia. This research used qualitative methods with a case study approach. Data were collected through interview, observation, and study of literature techniques. The results revealed that the construction of reality presented by the media was generally only seen from an Indonesian perspective, not much from a Malaysian perspective. Although the social reality of Malaysia’s ‘cultural claims’ did not reflect the thinking of all Indonesians, this conflict was actually driven more by a small group of Indonesians whose loyalty is unclear. Unlike the Indonesian media, Malaysian media did not consider art and culture originating from Indonesia as an important issue. So, the problem was not widely reported. Malaysian media believed that Indonesian media was exaggerating the fact and that it was only in the interest of the mass media to find exciting news to publish.

Abstract

The healthcare reality is composed of  biomedical,  naturalistic, and  personalistic systems. Although the three healthcare systems go separately, to some extent they are overlapped. This study aims to explore alternative healing practices in Indonesia based on the personalistic system. The method used is a case study. Data was collected in several big cities (Bandung, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Palembang, Batam and Makassar) in Indonesia through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with stakeholders of healthcare programs on media, interviews with physicians, alternative therapists and patients, observation of alternative therapies, and media content analysis. The results indicate that the healthcare practices based on the personalistic system is widespread throughout Indonesia, including religious treatment (often called ruqyah) involving religious chants and prayers. With some using herbal medicine, a lot of alternative therapies based on the personalistic system have been promoted through word of mouth (interpersonal communication) by common people as patients as well as through the electronic media (especially television), and print media (especially newspapers) in many areas in the country.

Abstract

This article responds to the concern of some Indonesian communication scholars with the scarcity of “indigenous” communication theories developed by Indonesians themselves. It must be admitted that in our country objective communication theories developed in the West are more dominant than interpretive (phenomenological and critical) ones. This leads to the frequent deductive testing of the existing theories, making our research stagnant. To develop indigenous communication theories, the best solution is to conduct phenomenological (inductive) research on intercultural communication phenomena and critical research on mass communication phenomena (especially television programs) in Indonesia. This will help us to develop Indonesian communication theories as well as to enlighten our society. Keywords: Phenomenological paradigm, objective paradigm (behaviorism and structural functionalism), critical paradigm

Abstract

This research aims to demonstrate how the Indonesian migrants in Melbourne construct their Indonesian identity based on the theoretical perspective of George Herbert Mead, Erving Goffman, and Fredrik Barth. To collect the data the researcher used the qualitative research method composed of participant observation and in-depth interviews. The quota sampling and the snowball sampling were carried out to select the key informants, that is, the Indonesian migrants who come from various socio-cultural backgrounds, most of them being Malay Indonesians who have lived in Australia for a long time. The results of the research indicate that the Indonesian identity in Melbourne is composed of several categories, each of which having its respective boundary. Thus, ethnic identity is dynamic and fluid to fit a particular situation. Some of the subjects performed impression management and passing in their interaction with others. Key words : Ethnic boundary, ethnic category, impression management, passing
