Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

People assume that cancer is a deadly disease. The communication gap between physicians and their patients results in incomplete information obtained by people with cancer. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach in order to explore the meaning of cancer within Bandung Cancer Society. Theories used as references are phenomenology and symbolic interactionism. The results of the study of 10 informants indicated that cancer is a very frightening disease; cannot be cured and results in no hope of survival; cancer is caused by unhealthy life style; and yet cancer increases acts of worship. All informants as cancer survivors made efforts to survive by following the doctor’s advice. Another result of this study states that communication that takes place between cancer survivors and other people with cancer within the Bandung Cancer Society has managed to change the view of cancer, motivate and raise the spirit of life.

Abstract

Abstract

Communication is used to both spread and develop science and technology. Communication technology can be used as a means of political propaganda, to change a concept, and move resources and an individual from one location to another. Some important values that we have to construct in communication are, among others, honesty (mutual trust) in determining a value system, in researching the cultural system of a community, in modifying information, and in spreading information. The obstacles in implementing a communication in Indonesia are that the Indonesian people have not yet had a blue print of their own cultural values and self concept, and many of them are information illiterate as well as still categorized as low-class or "kroco jiwa" individuals. Abstract

This study aimed to determine the construction of cross-border smoke haze (Transboundary Haze Pollution) on detik.com and malaysiakini.com news portal. This study used qualitative method with critical discourse analysis (Critical Discourse Analysis/ CDA) from Teun A. van Dijk’s Model. The results of this study showed that both the reporters detik.com and malaysiakini.com thematically used certain language prominence in writing the news. That was done to attract the attention of the readers. From these two different news portals, it could be concluded that each media was influenced by the interest of each country. It was also very clear that each media did not want to blame the state itself and pro-government. Schematically, from the beginning, detik.com reporters directed that Malaysia corner Indonesia not only through the issue of fog but also touched on the issue of the invasion of pigs. Whereas in the news portal malaysiakini.com, the journalist had directed the reader to the protest letter posted by Malaysia to the Indonesian government. While, semantically, detik.com reporters saw that Malaysia truly blames Indonesia without looking at companies from their countries which involved in forest and land fires in the Indonesian territory. On the malaysiakini.com portal, they dismissed it by making a phrase wanting to help the Indonesian government in dealing with fires that occurred in Indonesian territory.

Abstract

This study aims to explore marriage between Indonesian women and the western men (laki-laki bule) from western culture and to describe the meaning of role and position of Indonesian women married with western men. Individual perspective on the role and gender position in marriage life is mostly influenced by neighbours, community, and family. The process of interpreting the role and gender position for Indonesian women is a part of community construction. This research deploys phenomenological perspective, particularly symbolic interactionism and the theory of the social construction of reality. Data have been collected by in-depth interviews and observation to seven Indonesian women married to western men in Jakarta selected through snowball sampling. This research found a construction meaning model related to the role and position of Indonesian women doing mix marriage. Through interaction with their husband, the informants define their role and position in marriage life which is inline with equality principle done by their husband including four different equality meaning, such as partial equality, natural equality, absolute equality, and pragmatic equality. The contribution of this study is to provide a model of construction of meaning on the role and position of Indonesian women doing mixed marriage in family and community.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the cross-cultural adaptation of Indonesian students in Busan, South Korea. It uses a qualitative approach based on the U-curve (a four-stage model of cross-cultural adjustment consisting of the phases of honeymoon, crisis, recovery and adjustment). It involves in-depth interviews with 10 Indonesian students in Busan. The study found that the U-Curve model of cross-cultural adaptation is still useful. In the context of the informants’ experiences, it is characterized by the main barriers that include differences in language and values of friendship, cross-cultural stereotypes and prejudices that led to discrimination. The study also identified culture shock faced by some of the informants as well as their coping strategies.
