Abstract

Recent years, advances in the internet and communication technology have enabled the proliferation of digital medical devices with innovations in health applications, including for visual acuity examination. However, the validity of these applications remains unclear. The limited mobility and health service during the COVID-19 pandemic underscores the urgent need to conduct research that validates these electronic device-based applications. Thus, this study aims to critically analyze whether the electronic device-based application can provide a valid and high-quality visual acuity examination. A systematic review was conducted through studies searching PubMed, MEDLINE, Springer, and Cochrane Library using specific keywords. After the studies were selected through inclusion and exclusion criteria, extraction was carried out. Publications from 2011 to the end of 2021 were reviewed, yielding in 1409 studies, of which 19 were included. The results showed a lower systematic bias for distance visual acuity testing with electronic device-based applications than standard reference tests with a mean difference of -0.08 to 0.10 logMAR. The validity of the near visual acuity examination with the application shows better results than the distance examination, which is marked by smaller 95% limits of agreement range. The results of the analysis of Bland-Altman plots in all the studies reviewed showed that the accuracy of the examination results tended to increase in patients who had better visual acuity. In practice, the use of electronic device-based applications for visual acuity examination can increase the work effectiveness of medical personnel and the proliferation of digital medical devices. It can also be one of the breakthroughs in remote medical services and support the implementation of telemedicine policies.

Abstract

Influence of Immersion Length on Tetracycline Absorption on Gourami (Osphronemus Gouramy) Scales as Adsorbent. Gourami (Osphronemus Gouramy) scales are one of the natural sources of collagen. This fish scale’s collagen has functional properties, such as bio-degradable (easily decomposed), bio-compatible (compatible with surrounding tissue), and potential as bio-adsorbent. The absorbent properties of collagen are currently used as a transport material in local drug delivery for periodontal disease treatment, which is known as tetracycline chip. However, this chip is made of synthetic collagen so it is not absorbable by the body’s system. The price is also expensive. This study’s aim is to prove the potency of Gourami scales as a source of collagen in medical treatment, especially as a transport material of tetracycline for periodontal disease treatment. The gourami scale was obtained from seafood restaurant in Jember, Jawa Timur. About 500 mg of gourami scales was immersed into 20 ml tetracycline solution in beaker glass. About 200 μl solution from the beaker glass was taken with micropipette after 1-hour, 2-hour, 4-hour, 12-hour and 24-hour after immersed. After that, the solution was collected into an eppendorf for each time. The absorbance was measured with spectrophotometer at 450 nm wave length. This procedure was repeated five times. The lowest absorbance occured at 1-hour time (160,6 μg/μl). The result from light and inverted microscope examination shows a bond between collagen from gourami scales with tetracycline. Gourami scale has the ability to absorb the highest rate of tetracycline at 1-hour immersed time by forming a bond between collagen and tetracycline.

Abstract

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) plays an important role in regulating the degradation and deposition extracellular matrix (ECM) that are important for wound reepithelization. However, excessive protease activity can lead to delayed wound healing. Kaemferol in spinach can inhibit the activity of MMP-9. Chitosan and collagen can help tissue growth and have an antimicrobial effect. Chitosan-collagen membranes have been widely used for wound healing but, the results are unsatisfactory. Therefore, the researcher wanted to know the activity of bakiko (Spinach-Chitosan-Collagen) membrane to MMP-9 expression on second degree burn with immunohistochemical method. This research was true-experimental laboratories design with post test only control group design. The experimental animals used were 36 white wistar rats (Rattus novergicus) male, divided into 4 groups ie control group, negative control, positive control (bioplacenton), and treatment (bakiko membrane). Data were obtained by calculating MMP-9 using ImageJ software. The analysis using anova test showed that p value less than 0.05 indicated a significant difference. This study showed that there was a decrease in MMP-9 activity by bakiko membrane in grade II burn with immunohistochemical method in wistar rats.

Abstract

Paederus dermatitis caused by rove beetle makes the tissue damage called dermonecrosis. The MMP on pederin toxins from the symbiosis of rove beetle (Paederus sp.) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa is supposed can delay the wound healing process. Doxycycline gel as a MMP inhibitor is believed can accelerate the healing process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of doxycycline gel on the healing process of Paederus dermatitis by observing the number of fibroblasts as an indicator. This study used 40 mice, were divided into four major groups, those were normal control group, the negative control, treatment groups with doxycycline gel 1% and 5%. Termination was performed on days 1, 3, 5, 7, and 15. Data was obtained by calculating the number of fibroblasts per field of view, then processed in ImageJ and tested statistically with comparation test of One Way Anova. The average number of fibroblasts per field of view in treatment groups was higher. The peak occurred on day 7 and decrease on day 15. It indicated that the topical administration of doxycycline gel on Paederus dermatitis can accelerate healing process, showed by the increasing in average number of fibroblasts per field of view.
