Abstract

The process of hatching eggs is greatly influenced by the level of cleanliness of the eggs, so disinfection is carried out to reduce contamination of the eggs. However, generally, the disinfectants used are chemical-based, causing residue. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using betel leaf extract disinfectant (Piper betle L.) on embryo mortality, hatchability, and hatching weight of village chickens. This study used a completely randomized (CRD) design with four treatments and replications. Treatments consisted of P0 (dipping solution without betel leaf extract), P1 (dipping solution containing 10% betel leaf extract), P2 (dipping solution containing 20% betel leaf extract) and P3 (dipping solution containing 30% betel leaf extract ). The data were analyzed using analysis of variance and continued with further tests of the Honestly Significant Difference Test (BNJ) on treatments that showed significant differences. The research showed that using betel leaf extract as a disinfectant of up to 30% did not significantly affect embryo mortality, hatchability, and hatching weight of kampong chicken eggs. Embryo mortality, hatchability, and hatching weight of native chickens in this study ranged between 30-45%, 55-70%, and 32.31-32.84%. The conclusion can be drawn is that using betel leaf extract up to 30% is not effective as a natural disinfectant for hatching kampong chicken eggs.

Abstract

Kampong chicken is one of the most common types of poultry bred by people throughout Indonesia. Kampong chickens have several limitations such as relatively slow growth and low egg production. One solution to overcome this is by utilizing hatching using an incubator. The incubator can eliminate the brooding period in the brood so that the hen can be more productive and able to produce more eggs. This Bina Desa activity was carried out in Opaasi Village, South Konawe Regency with kampong chicken farmers as target partners. This activity involves a team of lecturers from the UHO Faculty of Animal Science and is carried out in several stages, namely: socialization, technical guidance on making hatching machines, hatching assistance, and evaluation of activities. The result of this activity is that it can provide additional knowledge and skills to native chicken farmers about the manufacture of hatching machines and their technical use of them.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the carcass composition of several different types of ducks in a semi-intensive maintenance system. There were 16 ducks used with 3 months of age based on a complete randomized design (CRD) with 4 different duck treatments and 4 replications. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that at the same age, Peking duck, alabio duck, manila duck and mojosari duck were significantly different (P <0.01) in cutting weight, carcass percentage, thigh percentage, back percentage, gizzard percentage and fat percentage abdominal. Meanwhile, the different types of ducks did not affect (P> 0.05) chest percentage, wing percentage, neck percentage and heart percentage. In general, live weight, percentage of carcasses and parts of carcasses of manila ducks were superior to mojosari ducks, alabio ducks and Peking ducks. The alabio duck is superior to the Peking duck and the mojosari duck. In terms of non-carcass organs, mojosari ducks had a percentage of gizzard superior to Peking, alabio and manila ducks, while the percentage of liver was significantly different (P <0.05) and the percentage of heart was not significantly different (P> 0.05). The abdominal fat content of alabio duck is very different from that of Peking duck, mojsari duck and manila duck.

Abstract

A major challenge in the quail farming industry is the reliance on commercial feed, most of which is imported. This study aims to evaluate the production performance of layer-phase quail (coturnix-coturnix japonica) fed a ration containing fermented rice bran. This research was carried out in October-November 2021. The research design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 (four) treatments and each treatment was repeated 5 (five) times where each replication consisted of 5 (female) quails. Parameters observed were feed consumption, egg production, egg weight, and feed conversion. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the use of rice bran at the level of 20% and 25% both fermented and unfermented had a significant effect on feed conversion and quail egg weight but had no significant effect on feed consumption and egg production.   Feeding containing 20% fermented rice bran showed the highest egg weight (12.84 g) and the lowest feed conversion value (4.18). It was concluded that the use of rice bran at the level of 20% and 25%, both fermented and unfermented, had a significant effect on feed conversion and egg weight of quails but no significant effect on feed consumption and egg production.
