Abstract

Measuring birth weight in low resource settings is problematic. Mothers' perception of newborn's size is often used as a proxy. This study examines the correlation between weight measured at birth and the mother's perception of her child's size and compare the determinants of low birth weight (LBW) and small birth size using both measures. This study analyzed the 2017 Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey data and examined the list of determinants associated with birth weight. There was a strong correlation between newborn's weight measured at birth and mother's perception of birth size and a high agreement between LBW and perceived small birth size. Both measures, birth order was a significant child factor, and the number of antenatal care (ANC) visits was an important ANC factor. Maternal education was a significant socioeconomic determinant of LBW, while household wealth and improved household latrine were significant determinants of perceived birth size. Mother's perception of birth size can be used as a proxy measurement for a child's birth weight for programmatic purposes in low resource settings where birth weight was difficult to measure.

Abstract

Introduction: The increase in cigarette production use in Indonesia has contributed to the rise of non-communicable diseases, affecting both active and passive smokers. Based on the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey around 70 million people in Indonesia smoke actively, with 7.4% of them being between the ages of 10 and 18 years old. Effective tobacco control and public education communications are essential to protect vulnerable populations from the dangers of passive smoking. Objective: To increase awareness among active smokers, this study analyzed communication messages about the impact of smoking on children and women regarding communication messages as tobacco-free education. Method: This qualitative study employed Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) involving active smokers from rural and urban areas in Indonesia. Participants were recruited from urban university students living in Surabaya and rural areas of Banyuwangi through online brochures distributed at multiple universities in each region. Eligible participants were both female and male active smokers who had been smoking for the last 3 years, consumed more than five conventional cigarettes, and had used electronic cigarettes more than five times. The study included two discussion groups, each with six participants. Data analysis was using thematic analysis. Result: Six types of media communications were conducted for each child and woman. The respondents in rural East Java equally favored messages A and C. Regarding the children communication in Urban East Java, most participants preferred message C, whereas one selected message B. Regarding the women’s communication, most urban participants chose message C, with two selecting message C and one choosing message B. Most participants acknowledged the adverse health impacts of cigarette smoking on passive smokers. Both rural and urban participants selected communication messages on children’s and women’s mortality data as impactful for tobacco-free education for active smokers. Conclusion: Communication messages focusing on children and women can effectively influence the perceptions and emotions of active smokers as tobacco-free education. Media development is needed to convey educational messages that inform both active and passive smokers, encouraging awareness and behavior change.

Abstract

Background: Anemia remains a serious problem among adolescent girls in Indonesia, with the prevalence rate of 32%. Low adherence to iron tablet consumption, especially in Islamic boarding schools, contributes to this problem, as evidenced by 11 cases identified at the target school. Adolescent girls have a significantly high risk of anemia due to low access to health information, lack of nutrition education, and limited support from health workers. Hence, involving peers as health cadres is an effective way to increase iron tablet intake and health-promoting behavior among the students. Objectives: To improve compliance with iron tablet consumption among female students by strengthening the role of cadres, creating a supportive school environment, and contributing to anemia free boarding schools in Banyuwangi Regency. Methods: The activities were conducted through socialization and training under the CEMPAKA (Cermat Pantau Kondisi Anemia) program. The final participants were 50 female students and 15 health cadres. Pre- and post-test questionnaires were used to determine the level of knowledge. Mean differences were calculated using a two-sample t-test with equal variances assumed to test for pre- and post-differences. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in student’s knowledge about anemia and iron tablet consumption (p=0.009, p<0.05). Similarly, cadre’s knowledge improved significantly (p=0.003, p<0.05). However, improvements in communication skills were not statistically significant (p=0.162, p>0.05), though a positive trend was observed, indicating better communication performance after training. Conclusion: The empowerment of cadres through the CEMPAKA program demonstrated improvements in knowledge about anemia, the importance of consuming iron supplements, and communication skills. A participative intervention such as this will further establish peer cadres as agents of healthy behavioral change in Islamic boarding schools and represents an initial step toward achieving a healthy, anemia-free Islamic boarding school in Banyuwangi Regency.
