Abstract

This study is to compare the income and technical efficiency of cabbage farming grown in wet landand in rainfed land and to analyse factors influencing the efficiency. The survey was conducted inSumberejo subdistrict of Tanggamus Regency, the center of cabbage production, in January 2019.Respondents wererandomly taken 30farmers who grew cabbagein wet land and 31 who grewcabbage in rainfed land. Data are analyzed quantitatively using income, frontier, andmultipleregression analyses. The results showed that the income of cabbage farming grown in wet land andin rainfed landis different, but they both profitable. There is no difference in the technical efficiency. Factors that influence technical efficiency of cabbage farming grown in wet land and in rainfedland are farming cost (negatively) and farmers’ education level and experience (possitively). Theonly factor influencing technical efficiency of cabbage farming grown in rainfed land is land size.Key words: cabbage farming, income, technical efficiency

Abstract

North Lampung Regency is the main producer of Lampung black pepper, which is generally in the form of a poly-culture system of pepper cultivation. This study aims to study the performance and productivity of the pepper plant which is intercropped with coffee by farmers in North Lampung. This study used a survey method and conducted in North Lampung by taking 2 samples of the sub-districts purposively, namely Abung Barat and Abung Tengah. From each district, 2 villages were selected purposively. Primary data were collected by interviewing 93 sample farmers who were randomly sampled. To deepen the performance of planting, visits and observations of farmers' fields were conducted. The results of this study concluded that: (1) 96% of farmers applied a poly-culture pepper plantation system. Intercropping pepper plantations have a lower pepper plant population but the presence of intercropping can cause land use efficiency to increase by up to 30%;(2) The poly-culture pepper fields  are managed less intensively as indicated by the low fertilizer dosage and the high mortality rate of pepper, which reaches 7-10% of plants per year; (3) The productivity of this intercropping system is pepper yield (conversion of SPH 1600 trees / ha) reaching 230-260 kg / ha or based on factual population reaching 155-267 kg/ha, coffee yield 166-221 kg/ha, and yield of Pithecellobium jiringa 24 -28 kg/tree; (4) According to farmers' perceptions, the main constraints faced by farmers (80.2% of farmers) were the attack of pepper foot rot disease, low prices for pepper, and high mortality of pepper trees. However, most farmers (88.9% of farmers) said they would not replace pepper with other crops. Keywords: Black pepper, coffee, Pithecellobium jiringa, poly-culture, yield

Abstract

Shade trees provide ecological benefits such as soil conservation, biodiversity conservation, and providing nutrient through litter fall and nitrogen fixation by legume trees. Therefore, shade tree is a key factor for sustainability coffee production. To evaluate productivity and sustainability of coffee agroecosystems a study was conducted at Sumberjaya Sub-district, West Lampung, Indonesia, during 2007-2010. Farmers were interviewed and two plots of Coffea canephora were set. Plot I was a long term experimental plot, established from shrub to young coffee agro-ecosystems with treatments of open-grown (sun) coffee and Gliricidae sepium, Erythrina indica and Michelia champaca shaded-grown coffee. Plot II was mature coffee fields of 15 years old with the same types of shade trees. The results showed that tipe of coffee agro-ecosystems determined productivity which legume-shaded coffee were higher than nonlegume-shade coffee or sun coffee. Based on the value of Sustainable Yield Index, Benefit Cost Ratio, Net Present Value, and Internal Rate of Return, Gliricidae sepium and Erythrina indica shaded coffee were more visible therefore more sustainable than 2 others coffee agro-ecosystems. Based on the survey and experimental plot, productivity of coffee agro-ecosystems of 3-26 yeras old showed two maximum points resulted in a regression of polinomial model. Key words: coffee, shade tree, productivity, sustainability

Abstract

Lampung coffee farmers generally cultivate Robusta coffee and practice ethno-agronomy based on local wisdom, including cultivating coffee of Robusta/Liberica interspecific grafting system. This community service activity uses the method of face-to-face meetings, FGD, training, and making demonstration plots. The targets of this activity are management and members of Wijaya Muda farmer groups and farmers around the location at Pekon Sukajaya, Sumberjaya, West Lampung District. The results showed that based on evaluation results, the PKM activities was going well, with obtaining a total score of 12 (3 variables, scores 1-5) which indicated the level of participation was categorized as good. The evaluation of the results selected from 12 indicators of knowledge/skills showed an increase in the score of 53 to 73, which means that the level of knowledge skills increased from sufficient to good. The intensification of the Robusta/Liberica grafting system increased drought resistance and coffee production. Keywords: Biochar, grafting, interspesific, Robusta/Liberica, intensification

Abstract

This study conducted to analysis the unsustainable risk of coffee farming based on the farmer’s perspective. The field survey set with questioner as a tool in exploring the farmers’ condition. The method of analysis applied Chi-square and regression model. The results indicated that coffee farmer’s perspectives on risk significantly differ based on the education level. Environment risk conditions referred to land degradation, decrease water quality, and water shortage, biodiversity loss, and global warming impact. The economics risk referred to land certainty and decrease of yield (failure). On the other side, the coffee farming income has determined by land area, a number of coffee trees, land tenure, and the participation in the certification scheme.
