Abstract

Purpose of the Study: Islamic religious education (PAI) in Indonesia plays a pivotal role in nurturing the character, morality, and spirituality of the younger generation. Among the key institutions delivering PAI are Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), which integrate religious and general education within a unique cultural and educational framework. This study aims to critically analyze the implementation of the Islamic education curriculum in pesantren and to assess its impact on educational quality and relevance in a rapidly changing societal context. Methodology: Adopting a qualitative library research approach, this study systematically examines scholarly literature, policy documents, and prior research to explore curriculum practices in pesantren. The focus is on understanding both traditional and modern models of curriculum integration and the challenges faced in adapting Islamic education to contemporary educational standards. Main Findings: The study reveals that traditional pesantren, emphasizing classical religious sciences, often encounter difficulties integrating competency-based curriculum reforms demanded by modern education systems. Conversely, progressive pesantren that adopt competency-based frameworks exhibit significant improvements in educational quality, particularly in practical skills aligned with societal and workforce needs. However, the transition remains uneven and faces structural challenges. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This research offers a novel perspective by highlighting the tension between maintaining religious authenticity and pursuing educational modernization in pesantren. It proposes a strategic model for curriculum transformation supported by government policy, teacher capacity building, and infrastructural enhancement. This study contributes to reimagining Islamic boarding schools as dynamic institutions capable of preserving religious values while equipping students for global challenges.

Abstract

This study examines how Qur’anic ethical education can be reconstructed as a pedagogical framework for promoting social harmony and religious tolerance in contemporary plural societies. The article departs from the widespread perception that the Qur’an is incompatible with tolerance because it is often interpreted literally and selectively, especially in relation to verses on war and unbelief. In contrast, this study argues that the dominant ethical orientation of the Qur’an is justice, compassion, recognition of diversity, dialogue, and peace. Using qualitative library research with a descriptive-interpretive design, the study employs thematic (maudhu‘i) and maqāṣidī approaches to analyze eighteen Qur’anic verses concerning freedom of religion, diversity, relations with non-Muslims, and reconciliation. The analysis is supported by classical and contemporary tafsir, particularly Tafsīr al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, Tafsīr al-Manār, and Tafsir al-Mishbah. The findings reveal five central Qur’anic ethical values; ‘adl, raḥmah, ta‘āruf, shūrā, and ṣulḥ/salām; which together form the basis of a reconstructed model of Qur’anic ethical education. These values are operationalized through five educational dimensions: educational goals, curriculum, pedagogy, institutional culture, and assessment. The study concludes that Qur’anic ethical education should move beyond doctrinal transmission and ritual piety toward the cultivation of empathy, intercultural competence, dialogue, and peaceful conflict resolution. Contribution: The study contributes by reframing Qur’anic ethics as a transformative and measurable pedagogical model that integrates justice, compassion, dialogue, and recognition of diversity into Islamic education in order to strengthen social harmony and religious tolerance in plural societies.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the role of pesantren in internalizing the values of religious moderation through the system applied in education organized with the pesantren's tradition. This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation studies involving kiai, ustadz, and students in the pesantren environment. Data analysis was carried out using thematic analysis techniques through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions drawn, and strengthened by triangulation of sources and techniques to ensure the validity of findings. The results of the study show that the internalization of religious moderation in Pesantren occurs holistically through the integration of formal curriculum, curriculum (formal and hidden curriculum), and Pesantren traditions. The example of kiai and ustadz as well as the collective culture of pesantren has proven to be a key factor in shaping the religious attitude of students that is moderate, inclusive, and oriented towards social harmony. This study concludes that pesantren function as a foundation of moderate Islamic education that is effective in maintaining social cohesion in a multicultural society. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of strengthening the role of Pesantren in the development of Islamic education policies and practices oriented towards religious moderation and social peace.

Abstract

Religious moderation is a trending topic that warrants study and research; however, the issue of understanding, actions, obstacles, and improvements, as well as its development, still cannot be measured properly. The purpose of this research is to explore and measure the understanding, actions, obstacles, and improvement, as well as the development of Religious Moderation. This research employs a survey method. The data sources are government employees, the community, and religious leaders in Madura. The results show that government employees, in supporting Religious Moderation, are 65% (neutral position). Meanwhile, in the realm of Action, there is up to 66.6% agreement with the concept of Religious Moderation. Among the obstacles to the implementation of Religious Moderation, there is a 65% figure in the preparation of the Religious Moderation strategy. The increase in the role of government employees in implementing Religious Moderation indicates that 67% falls within the realm of development. The development of Religious Moderation research shows that the subjects of Religious Moderation are students, the community, and the PAI curriculum, whereas current research focuses on government employees and the Religious Moderation program. This research provides a basis for government policymaking to design the Religious Moderation program more effectively.
