Abstract

Surakarta City has long been associated with religious radicalism, positioning it as a critical site for studying Islamic moderation in Indonesia. This study aims to explore how religious communities in Surakarta construct and negotiate a moderate Islamic identity through the use of symbols and narratives, in response to stigmatization as a center of extremism. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine religious leaders from various organizations, participatory observations, and analysis of religious documents and local media. Thematic coding and triangulation techniques were used to ensure analytical rigor and validity. The findings reveal that symbols such as traditional attire, inclusive religious rituals, and narratives rooted in local Islamic history are strategically mobilized to promote a peaceful and nationalist version of Islam. These symbolic strategies serve not only to legitimize the presence of moderate communities in public space but also to resist and counter radical stereotypes. The study demonstrates that Islamic moderation at the local level emerges through complex, deliberate cultural processes rather than passive adaptation. It contributes to the discourse on community-based religious moderation and provides empirical insights for culturally grounded deradicalization policies.

Abstract

During Indonesia’s 2019 presidential election, significant religious and ethnic contestations occurred using hatred and stigma in expressing support for favored candidates. This article focuses on the case of West Kalimantan Province which has a divided society and memories of ethnic-based bloody communal violence in the early 2000s.  This article notifies that wherein ethnic Dayak, Javanese, and Chinese voters tended to support Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Ma’ruf Amin, while ethnic Malay, Madurese, and Buginese voters tended to back Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno up in the election. However, such ethnic and religious contestations in West Kalimantan did not generate violent conflicts during the election. Instead, voters continued to interact peacefully and harmoniously among different ethnic and religious groups. This contestation coincided with the emergence of political awareness among the Dayaks, Chinese, and Malays of West Kalimantan, which further contributed to Jokowi’s electoral victory.  Nevertheless, this political contestation produced the political identity.

Abstract

Some questions are raised by foreign researchers and observers about Islam of Indonesia. After literature survey was done, it’s concluded that format of the Indonesian Islam is moderate and tolerate one. This is viewed in its characteristic doesn’t support the method of coercion, eviction, and destruction of the religious tradition existing before Islam came to Indonesia in developing it in archipelago, before it changes to Indonesia. The accommodative characteristic of the Islam developed by the clergy (religious figure) such as walisongo in Java Island, the religious figure (muballigh) from the Middle East in Indonesia and also the muballigh after walisongo coming from Muhammadiyah and NU. Islam never discredited another religion even though it’s different. So, the culture developed is the moderate and tolerate culture even though it aims to do renewal about which one is not suitable with Islam. The literature done in this writing has shown the characteristic of the Indonesian Islam which is known also with the term Islam of archipelago (Islam Nusantara).

Abstract

In  Indonesian  politics,  post-Islamism  has  emerged  in  response  to the  rise  of  political  Islam  since  the  beginning  of  Reformasi  in  1998.  Post- Islamism is negotiable and accommodative, seeking to adapt to the Indonesian Archipelago’s political realities and actual social conditions. As such, it does not  promote  confrontation  with  political  powers—something  common  in the  Islamist  movements  that  gained  traction  before  Reformasi—even  as  it seeks to counteract the Islamist tendencies that have gained prominence  in contemporary Indonesia. This article finds that post-Islamism offers a future in which the political rights of all citizens are guaranteed while social justice and human rights are upheld. Post-Islamists promote neither the formalization of  sharia  law  nor  the  fundamental  transformation  of  the  Indonesian  state, but rather a substantive political ideology that welcomes (rather than rejects) democracy. Meanwhile, Islamic law in Indonesia includes sharia laws passed at  the  provincial  and  regency  levels  by  the  governor  or  regent  (Bupati) with political parties and traders. Although efforts to cultivate post-Islamist mindsets have been hindered by intolerant, exclusive, and extremist elements of Indonesian society, it is hoped that organizations such as Muhammadiyah and  Nahdlatul  Ulama  can  continue  to  maintain  a  moderate,  inclusive  and tolerant understanding of Islam.

Abstract

The urgency of this research lies in the need to understand the trends, contributions, and dynamics of women's political participation globally. This article aims to map studies that focus on women's political participation. Research methods include bibliometric analysis with data sources from the Scopus database. The study's findings reflect significant growth in women's political participation research, especially in recent years, with distribution varying by country and research theme. The research findings also show that although there are themes that have received attention, there are still areas that need to be explored further, such as intersectionality, gender equality, gender, and the impact of social media that provide insight into the complexity of women's political participation issues. This study recommends the need for increased research and local understanding of the factors influencing women's political participation in Indonesia to strengthen women's role in politics by learning from other countries that have successfully implemented inclusive policies. In addition, by involving various parties, including the government, research institutions, and civil society, Indonesia can create an environment that supports, empowers, and encourages women's political participation optimally. The implications of these findings not only help shape academic discourse, but also lay the foundation for concrete efforts to achieve gender equality and women's empowerment in the wider political sphere.

Abstract

The implementation of special autonomy in Papua Province has raised critical challenges, particularly the marginalization of certain groups based on ethnicity and religion. This study examines the dynamic role of Muslim groups in Papua post-special autonomy implementation, addressing gaps in previous research. Using a qualitative descriptive case study approach, the findings reveal three key points. First, the political engagement of Muslim groups has become more dynamic but remains limited compared to Indigenous Papuans (OAP). Second, special autonomy policies, while intended to empower OAPs, have narrowed the participation space for non-OAP groups, including Muslims. Third, the policies restrict opportunities for Muslim Papuans to hold strategic government positions, as recruitment prioritizes OAP representation. These findings highlight the multidimensional challenges of special autonomy, including social, political, and economic inequalities. The study concludes that, while special autonomy policies offer opportunities for regional development, they also foster tensions and marginalization. To address these issues, it recommends adopting more inclusive governance and balanced policies that accommodate both OAP and non-OAP groups. By doing so, Papua’s development can be more equitable and sustainable, fostering harmony among its diverse communities.

Abstract

General elections are interpreted as a concrete manifestation of the implementation of democracy in Indonesia. However, the use of the Presidential Threshold is a matter of debate ahead of the 2024 General Election. The issue related to the Presidential Threshold has become a hot issue reported by the Indonesian media. The media have an essential role in shaping public narratives related to policymaking. The part of public records can create collective awareness by providing information about actors' choices in making a policy decision. This study aims to analyze how policymaking actors in Indonesia make decisions regarding using the Presidential Threshold in the 2024 General Election seen from the public narrative formed in the media. A Narrative Policy Framework (NPF) study will be conducted to describe and explain the structure of political narratives in policymaking. This study uses a qualitative research method with a QDAS (Qualitative Data Analysis Software) approach. The data sources in this study came from reputable online media in Indonesia. Research findings show that the government's attitude toward the House of People's Representatives (DPR) as policymakers does not waver towards implementing the 20% Presidential Threshold in the upcoming 2024 elections. However, the narrative built on the media regarding implementing the Presidential Threshold is more dominated by the contrast. This is inseparable from the political interest ahead of the 2024 general election. Namely, to carry and win presidential and vice-presidential candidates who are supported by each political actor involved.
