Abstract

This study explored the typologies of Islamic thought among Muhammadiyah elites in East Java concerning the discourse on apostasy. Responses vary, with the inclusive view treating apostasy as a private matter between the individual and God, a basic human right with no legal consequences, supported by the Qur'an and the 1945 Constitution. The exclusive view, however, sees apostasy as a public offense, where freedom of choice is conditional and legal repercussions are necessary. The didactic perspective understands apostasy as a moral error, best addressed through education and compassionate guidance to encourage a return to Islam. The findings indicate a dominant trend towards inclusive views but reveal inconsistencies, as elites may express inclusive views on religious freedom while adopting exclusive stances on legal aspects of apostasy. Despite these differences, all maintain a didactic approach when dealing with apostasy within families. This study underscored the dynamic nature of Islamic thought in Muhammadiyah, challenging the perception of rigidity and highlighting the influence of diverse sociological and intellectual backgrounds.

Abstract

This study aims to make a scientific contribution to the development of Islamic studies and the politics of Islamic law, especially democracy from the perspective of Muhammadiyah cadres in Central Kalimantan. This research was conducted using empirical research methods with a qualitative-descriptive approach. The data collection technique used was interviewing key information, namely Muhammadiyah cadres and literature studies in the form of writing related to the discussion. The results of the study show that the development of Indonesian democracy in the Reform Era, 2005 to 2019 as understood is quite dynamic, this can be seen from issues such as; general elections, human rights and gender, terrorism and democracy, then the response of Muhammadiyah cadres to democracy; (1) democracy is compatible or in line with Islamic values; and (2) these three subjects are more concerned with procedural democracy than substantive democracy, such as holding general elections and national and regional political recruitment, which must be corrected and improved.

Abstract

Abstract

Papua faces complex socio-religious dynamics with the potential for conflict among religious communities. This article explores the strategic role of Muslims in building social harmony. The data used as the basis for analyzing this article was obtained through observation, interviews, and literature studies. The results show that the Muslim community plays an active role as a “creative minority” by integrating moderate Islamic values and the socio-cultural context in Papua. Involvement in the Forum Kerukunan Umat Beragama (FKUB), social programs, and collaboration with religious leaders, local communities, and the government are key in strengthening tolerance and openness. This study contributes to the integration of the concepts of social capital and Islamic moderation in social-religious studies that emphasize the importance of the involvement of religious communities in realizing harmonious social life in a multicultural society. From this it can be seen that to realize and maintain harmony in Papua requires a multidimensional approach involving continuous dialogue, policy support, and the use of local wisdom. Therefore, further research is recommended to explore the perspectives of other religious communities in presenting inclusive dialogue to realize and maintain a harmonious social life among religious communities.

Abstract

The work aims at exploring the practice of symbolic power of sleeping without kapok (matress) in a hamlet of Kasuran. It explores the process of reproduction of symbolic power and how it becomes a ritual practice preserved by the people of Kasuran. For many Kasuran people, Sunan Kalijaga saying is final. They understand and believe in his textual meaning by practising sleeping without matress ritual. The study finds that the reproduction of meaning of sleeping without mattress happens in the hands of agents that actively promote the myth about the saying of Sunan Kalijogo. They include Wartilah as the head of the hamlet (believing and promoting Sunan Kalijaga statement), Suharso as a pious man from Hindu tradition, secretary of the forum of harmony among religious blievers (believing that this myth is supposed to happen far before Sunan Kalijaga Era),  Juremi and Suwardi, the takmir (board management of mosque) that represent religious mass organization of Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Although the agents have different points of view in understanding the phenomenon, they actually maintain and preserve this kind of symbolic power to gain symbolic capital. This work also finds that the dynamic process of engineering and modification of living without mattress becoming living with spon mattress/springbed has been the results of the new interpretation by the people in the village. The latest is associated with spiritual, social and political engineering aspects of the practice.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the cultural barriers of the National Awakening Party (Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa or PKB) in promoting its members as candidates in direct presidential and vice-presidential elections. In the four general elections from 2004 to 2019, PKB failed to place its members as candidates. This condition is presumed to be due to cultural barriers embedded within the party’s internal dynamics and the cadre system. The research method employed in this study combined qualitative descriptive approaches by integrating literature studies with Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving seven (7) competent informants comprising three media editors, two academics, one activist, and one politician. The data obtained from the FGD is the primary guide to trace document data. The data presentation involves triangulation of FGD data, document data, and field observation results. The data findings revealed three main pieces of evidence for cultural barriers: first, egocentrism of leaders and personal dependence, which refers to the positions of Kyai and Islamic Boarding Schools (pesantren) in the PKB cadre system; second, obedience that erases critical thinking, and third, the presence of the “green blood” identity, which holds privileges in the PKB’s cadre ship system. These three cultural barriers are not unique to PKB but are shared by most Islamic political parties in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article seeks to elucidate the fundamental concept of shirkah muḍārabah (business partnership based on sharing agreement) within both classical and contemporary Islamic legal literature, as well as its historical application in Islamic contexts. It endeavors to reconceptualize this notion and its implementation, particularly within the Indonesian framework, through the lens of Islamic law.  Through library research and critical reconstructive analysis, it is concluded that the concept of shirkah muḍārabah can be effectively implemented, largely devoid of socio-economic and political constraints, particularly in partnership-based business activities between investors-capitalists and proprietors who are committed to conducting business partnerships grounded in trust, founded on the principles of honesty, transparency, and maqāṣid sharīa (higher objectives of Islamic jurisprudence) argument.
