Abstract

Elaeidobius kamerunicus Faust is an oil palm pollinator insect that lives on the male inflorescence and visits female inflorescence to pollinate due to attracted by its volatile compound. The number of fruit sets of oil palm relates to the population of E. kamerunicus on a plantation. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of age of oil palm on the population of E. kamerunicus. Field research was conducted in oil palm plantations that located in Pangkalan Lada, Kotawaringin Barat District, in Central Kalimantan. The research method was by measurement of E. camerunicus population on male inflorescences and set up the sticky trap on female inflorescences. Plot with size 7000 m2 (100 trees) was selected on several ages of oil palm i.e. 6, 10 and 16 years. Each plot, the number of male and female inflorescences was counted and some inflorescences were chosen for measurement of E. camerunicus population that was conducted monthly for three months of observation. The results showed that the age of the oil palm affected the population of E. kamerunicus in male inflorescences but not in female inflorescences. The older age of oil palm, the population of E. kamerunicus in male flowers was increasing. The sex ratio of E. kamerunicus found in male and female inflorescences of oil palms tend to female bias. Based on the comparison of E. kamerunicus population between male and female inflorescences on each plot, it was found that visitation value of E. kamerunicus was highest in the young oil palm. In conclusion, increasing age of oil palm trees affected on increasing of E. kamerunicus population in male inflorescences, but visitation value on female inflorescences prone to decline.

Abstract

Hymenoptera is one of the four largest insect orders in the world, one of which is its role as a natural enemy (parasitoids, predators). Land conversion can affect the diversity and composition of the parasitoid Hymenoptera and its ecological role. This study aims to examine the effect of land use types on the diversity and composition of hymenopterans parasitoid in Jambi. The study was conducted on various types of land use in the Harapan Forest landscape and Bukit Duabelas National Park (TNBD), Jambi Province including forests, rubber forests, oil palm plantations, and rubber plantations. Insect sampling was conducted from March to September 2013, using fogging techniques. A total of 14,258 hymenopteran parasitoid individuals consisting of 30 families were obtained from all study sites. Encyrtidae, Braconidae, Aphelinidae, Eulophidae, Scelionidae, Ceraphronidae, and Platigasteridae families are found in high abundance. Oil palm land use types are found to have different parasitoid compositions compared to other land use types, while forest and rubber forest land use types have high species composition. The results of this study indicate that the type of land use affects the diversity and composition of hymenopteran parasitoid species.

Abstract

Habitat conditions around cocoa plantations which include canopy cover and lower vegetation (weeds) as well as the presence of mealybugs trophobiont (Planococcus sp.) can affect the diversity and abundance of ants. The objective of this research was to study the diversity and abundance of ants in cocoa plantations and to study the effect of habitat conditions and the presence of trophobiont (Planococcus sp.) on species richness and ant abundance. The research was carried out in 12 locations spread across five districts in East Java. Ant samples were collected by tuna bait and direct collection. The results obtained 5,475 individuals and 8 species of ants. The most dominant ants and found in all areas were Dolichoderus thoracicus (Smith) and Technomyrmex albipes (Smith). Based on the regression analysis, there is a relationship between canopy cover and vegetation diversity with ant species, but not with abundance, meanwhile the presence of trophobiont shows a positive correlation with ant abundance. The habitat conditions for cocoa cultivation and the presence of trophobiont affect the diversity and abundance of ants in cocoa plantations.

Abstract

Refugia are plants that play an important role in the conservation of natural enemies in agroecosystem. Refugia plants are useful for providing shelter and host/prey for natural enemies, especially parasitoids and predators. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of refugia and different planting seasons on the diversity and species composition of natural enemies (especially predatory spiders and Hymenoptera parasitoids) in maize fields. Field research was conducted in two different seasons i.e., dry season (April to July 2022) and rainy season (September to December 2022) in Tumpang Village, Malang District. The maize fields for the study were grouped into four different areas, with two observation plots (size 40 m í— 50 m) in each area, consisting of a monoculture maize field (control plot) and a maize field with refugia plants (treatment plot). Sampling was conducted using pitfall traps (for predatory spiders) and yellow traps (for Hymenoptera parasitoids). Traps were set for 1 í— 24 hours and conducted at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks after planting. The results from two planting seasons were obtained predatory spider diversity amounted to 626 individuals consisting of 7 families, and 40 morphospecies, while Hymenoptera parasitoids amounted to 787 individuals consisting of 5 families, and 63 morphospecies. Based on generalized linear models analysis, it was found that refugia planting did not affect the diversity of natural enemies, but affected the species composition of predatory spiders. Different planting seasons affect the diversity and species composition of predatory spiders as well as Hymenoptera parasitoids.

Abstract

The use of bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum) as an alternative fumigant has the potential to control Araecerus fasciculatus (De Geer (Coleoptera: Antribidae). The objective of this study was to evaluate the bioactivities of bay leaf fumigant tablet (BLFT) with exposure times (24, 48, and 72 h) on adult mortality, oviposition deterrence, inhibition of F1 progeny, and feeding activity of the internal feeder pest, A. fasciculatus. This study was used seven concentration levels of BLFT (i.e., 0, 1.25, 2.5, 3.75, 5, 6.25, and 7.5 ml/l air) replicated four times and arranged in a completely randomized design. The observed variables were adult male and female mortality, number of eggs, F1 progeny, and inhibition of feeding activity. The results showed that bay leaf tablets have very significant potential as a fumigant against A. fasciculatus. Bay leaf tablets fumigant at a concentration of 3.75 ml/l air within 24 hours of application were able 100% inhibit feeding activity, oviposition, F1 progeny, prevent perforation, and weight loss of Katana 1 peanut seeds, and mortality of male and female A. fasciculatus

Abstract

Cendawan endofit adalah salah satu agen pengendali biologi yang dapat melindungi tanaman dari serangan patogen. Bawang dayak merupakan tanaman obat di Kalimantan Selatan sebagai inang dari cendawan endofit yang berpotensi sebagai agen pengendali biologi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kemampuan cendawan endofit bunga bawang dayak, Fusarium solani EnI,  dalam mengendalikan penyakit layu fusarium di tanaman bawang merah, kemampuan hambatnya dengan Aspergillus flavus dan skrining bahan metabolit yang terkandung dalam ekstrak kultur endofit. Metode penelitian menggunakan uji penghambatan in vitro terhadap A.flavus, kejadian penyakit layu fusarium pada pada tanaman bawang yang merah yang diaplikasikan endofit cendawan bunga bawang dayak F. solani EnI di rumah kaca serta skrining fitokimia kultur endofit. Penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) satu faktor yaitu perbedaan media tumbuh secara in vitro dan pengayaan cendawan  endofit pada benih dan media tanam secara in vivo. Parameter pengamatan meliputi persen daya hambat, kejadian penyakit layu fusarium, tinggi tanaman, berat kering tanaman dan uji kualitatif fitokimia. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan benih dan media tanam yang diperkaya cendawan endofit F.solani EnI pada bawang merah telah meningkatkan ketahanan tanaman terhadap serangan layu fusarium ditunjukan dengan meningkatnya pertumbuhan tanaman dari parameter tinggi tanaman yaitu dengan nilai tanaman tertinggi 43 cm pada 7 MST dan berat kering tertinggi yaitu 22 g. Hal ini dikarenakan kemampuan endofit yang mengandung senyawa metabolit terpenoid yang bersifat antimikroba dari hasil kualitatif fitokimianya. Cendawan endofit F. solani EnI juga mampu menghambat pertumbuhan cendawan kontaminan A. flavus secara in vitro dengan daya hambat 50-68 % pada variasi media PDA, jagung dan kedelai.

Abstract

Metode budidaya, kondisi habitat, dan komposisi lanskap memengaruhi keanekaragaman dan kelimpahan parasitoid Hymenoptera. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik lanskap, keanekaragaman, kelimpahan, dan komposisi parasitoid Hymenoptera, serta menganalisis pengaruh metode budidaya, kondisi habitat, dan komposisi lanskap terhadap keanekaragaman dan kelimpahan parasitoid di Kabupaten Malang, Jawa Timur. Sebanyak dua belas lokasi budidaya kubis dipilih, dengan radius 500 meter di sekitar setiap lokasi yang dipetakan untuk digitalisasi lanskap menggunakan aplikasi QGIS. Analisis data dilakukan dengan menggunakan Analysis of Similarity (ANOSIM) dan Generalized Linear Model (GLM) melalui perangkat lunak RStudio. Pada setiap lahan dilakukan sampling parasitoid Hymenoptera dengan menggunakan yellow pan trap selama 1x24 jam. Hasil penelitian diketahui bahwa karakteristik lanskap pada lokasi penelitian didominasi oleh tipe penggunaan lahan habitat alami dan lahan pertanian. Jumlah keanekaragaman spesies terbanyak adalah Braconidae (Braconidae sp.4) dan Scelionidae (Scelionidae sp.2). Jumlah individu paling melimpah yaitu dari Famili Tetracampidae. Cara budidaya seperti umur tanaman kubis berpengaruh positif terhadap keanekaragaman parasitoid Hymenoptera. Komposisi lanskap pada skala lanskap yaitu jumlah fragmen (patch) pertanian dan skala lahan seperti umur tanaman kubis memberikan pengaruh terhadap keanekaragaman parasitoid Hymenoptera. Hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa parasitoid Hymenoptera lebih dipengaruhi oleh skala lahan daripada skala lanskap.

Abstract

The existence of Hymenoptera parasitoids can be influenced by the landscape structure of agricultural land. Optimization of pest control using natural enemies can be done on a landscape scale. This study aimed to examine the characteristics of the rice cultivation landscape at each research location, examine the diversity of Hymenoptera parasitoids and their role in rice cultivation. In addition, this study aims to examine the factors that influence the diversity and abundance of Hymenoptera parasitoids, as well as examine the effect of landscape composition on the diversity and abundance of Hymenoptera parasitoids in rice cultivation in Malang Regency, East Java. The research was conducted at various designated rice planting locations. The research locations were in 4 sub-districts, namely Karangploso, Lawang, Kepanjen, and Tumpang sub-districts with three sampling points in each of these sub-districts. The research began with determining the location or ground survey. Insects were sampled using yellow pan traps,  with two traps installed in each subplot. Samples preserved in vials containing 70% alcohol were then sorted into microtubes according to sampling order, and specimens were examined morphologically to determine morphospecies. Supporting data were obtained from interviews with farmers or land owners. All data were entered into a database in Microsoft Excel and spreadsheets and analyzed using RStudio. The results indicated that the 12 study sites varied widely and were classified as complex landscapes, comprising eight land-use types dominated by natural habitats, paddy fields, and settlements. Hymenoptera parasitoids were found consisting of 8 families and 21 morphospecies. The parasitoids found act as parasitoids of eggs, larvae, eggs-larvae, and larvae-pupae. Altitude and age factors correlated with the diversity of Hymenoptera parasitoids. Landscape composition metrics, including Number of Patches (NP) and Class Area (CA) of rice fields, were correlated with the diversity and abundance of individual parasitoids.

Abstract

The coffee bean weevil, Araecerus fasciculatus (DeGeer) (Coleoptera: Anthribidae), is a significant polyphagous stored product pest known to cause severe damage, including perforation and hollowing, in stored maize. This study aimed to determine the adult presence and oviposition preference of A. fasciculatus across twelve commercial maize varieties, and to analyze the correlation between preference and specific grain characteristics. The free choice test method (FCTM) was employed using preference cages with 12 or 6 chambers. In each test, 30 g of maize were infested with 60 pairs of 7- to 14-day-old A. fasciculatus adults for seven days. Adult presence (total and by sex) was recorded daily, and the number of eggs laid was counted microscopically at the end of the infestation period. The composition of maize varieties significantly affected adult presence and oviposition. Results consistently showed that the Pertiwi 3 variety was the most highly preferred for both adult presence (21.86 individuals in the 12-variety test) and oviposition (22.75 eggs in the 12-variety test). This high preference was supported by the Perkasa variety (e.g., 13.54 adults), which was also consistently preferred across the different test compositions. Further analysis using the generalized linear model (GLM) indicated that the preference is driven by grain quality: adult presence showed a positive correlation with moisture content, while oviposition exhibited a negative correlation with phenol content. These findings suggest that the Pertiwi 3 variety, likely due to its favorable physical attributes and low levels of chemical defense, is the most susceptible to A. fasciculatus infestation.

Abstract

The local ecological knowledge of coffee agroforestry farmers regarding earthworms serves as one of the soil fauna indicators of soil fertility and quality. This knowledge is inherited through generations from observations and experiences of coffee farmers, sometimes differing from modern ecological knowledge. This study aims to analyze the relationship between farmers Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) in simple coffee agroforestry systems and their socio-demographic characteristics; to examine their understanding of the ecological roles of earthworms and Lepidiota stigma; and to identify and assess the gap between Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) and Modern Ecological Knowledge (MEK). Local ecological knowledge was obtained through in-depth interviews with coffee agroforestry farmers concerning soil management, the role of earthworms, and pests in maintaining soil quality on the slopes of Mount Tambora (NTB). In-depth interviews were conducted with key respondents and coffee agroforestry farmers grouped by gender, age, and educational background using predetermined questions. Based on interviews with 50 coffee farmers, the percentages of soil quality indicators recognized by them ranked as follows: earthworms (80%), soil color (74%), plant growth (36%), humus or litter (10%), and soil structure (6%). Furthermore, 72% (n=50) of coffee farmers indicated that soil organisms significantly influence soil fertility. This study highlights the scientific value of Local Ecological Knowledge in sustainable soil management and encourages its integration with modern science through participatory research.
