Abstract

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is a vegetable with significant potential for cultivation due to its high economic value. However, cabbage production experiences fluctuations each year primarily due to pest factors. To control these pests, natural enemies such as ants can be utilized. Ants are highly sensitive to changes in their habitat, making them known as environmental bioindicators. Additionally, landscape structure can influence the presence of insects, including predators and parasitoids. This study aims to determine the effects of cultivation methods, habitat conditions, and landscape composition on ant diversity and abundance. The research was conducted from November 2022 to May 2023 across 12 fields in four different sub-districts: Pujon, Tumpang, Poncokusumo, and Purwodadi. The research process included landscape mapping and characterization, determination of observation plots, trap installation and sampling, species identification, collection of supporting data, and data analysis. The study yielded a total of 4,053 individuals representing 26 genera and 52 morphospecies. The ant species with the highest abundance was Lophomyrmex sp.3, while the greatest diversity was observed within the genus Tetramorium. Insecticide application and plant age did not significantly affect ant diversity and abundance; however, elevation did influence ant abundance. Additionally, landscape composition, particularly the class area (CA) of natural habitats, correlated positively with both ant diversity and abundance.

Abstract

Abstract

Landscape management in an agroecosystem is part of an ecological approach aimed at conserving biological control to suppress the abundance of pests and crop damage. This study investigates how agricultural landscape composition influences the abundance and attack rates of Spodoptera frugiperda and its parasitoids’ abundance and parasitism rates. The research assessed landscape characteristics in maize fields around Bogor, including class area (CA) and the number of patches (NP) of agricultural and semi-natural habitats. A 300-meter radius buffer was used to evaluate these features. Eggs and larvae of S. frugiperda were collected and reared in the laboratory to observe their parasitized and non-parasitized development. The influence of landscape composition on the abundance, attack rate, and parasitism of S. frugiperda was analyzed using generalized linear models. The results indicate that landscape composition affects the abundance and attack rate of S. frugiperda and influences the abundance and parasitism rate of parasitoids. Increasing the agricultural class area can increase the abundance of S. frugiperda larvae. In addition, increasing the NP and CA of semi-natural habitats can reduce the infestation rate of S. frugiperda. The elevation of maize areas also shows an influence on the abundance of parasitoids and the parasitism of larvae. In contrast, the age of the maize affects the abundance and attack of S. frugiperda. These findings highlight the importance of landscape composition, particularly the presence of semi-natural habitats, in managing pest populations effectively. This ecological approach offers valuable insights for sustainable pest control strategies in agricultural practices.

Abstract

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea) is a vegetable crop with high commercial value in Indonesia. However, cabbage production still fails to meet consumer demand, with one of the causes being pest damage. Plant pest can be suppressed and controlled using natural enemies from various orders, including Coleoptera or beetles. Cultivation practices and landscape composition influence the presence of beetles. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the landscape, the role of beetles, and the relationship between cultivation methods and landscape composition on the diversity, abundance, and composition of beetles. The research methods include determining the location and observation plots, mapping the landscape and characterizing the composition of the landscape, and setting traps for sampling, identification, and documentation. Data analysis used analysis of variance, analysis of similarity, and Generalized Linear Models (GLM). All data analyses were performed using RStudio software and the vegan package. Based on the research results, the dominant land use types are agriculture and natural habitats; beetles consist of predatory, herbivorous, decomposer, and scavenger beetles. Cultivation methods did not correlate with beetle diversity, abundance, and composition, whereas habitat conditions and landscape composition did correlate with beetle diversity, abundance, and composition.

Abstract

Pakchoy mustard greens, also known as Brassica rapa L., is a very popular vegetable and belongs to the mustard greens family or known as Brassicaceae. This vegetable is very popular and loved by Indonesian people. Pakchoy mustard greens are widely planted by farmers in Indonesia because they have high economic value and nutritional content. There are several factors that can hinder the decline in the quality and quantity of the pakchoy mustard crop harvest, one of which is disturbance caused by pests. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of administering green betel leaf solution and to determine the most effective concentration of green betel leaf solution in reducing the intensity of pest attacks on Pakchoy mustard plants. This research used a one-factor Randomized Block Design (RAK). The factors studied were the treatment of green betel leaf solution (P) with five concentration levels which were repeated in 4 repetitions so that 20 experimental units were obtained. P0: Control (0% concentration); P1: Concentration 65% (65 ml green betel leaf solution + 35 ml water); P2: Concentration 70% (70 ml green betel leaf solution + 30 ml water); P3: Concentration 75% (75 ml green betel leaf solution + 25 ml water); P4: Concentration 80% (80 ml of green betel leaf solution + 20 ml of water). The results of the research showed that the administration of green betel leaf solutions with various concentrations had a significant effect on the intensity of pest attacks on pakchoy mustard plants. The treatment of giving 80 ml of green betel leaf solution + 20 ml of water is the best concentration that can reduce the level of pest attacks on Pakchoy mustard greens, with a total percentage of pest attack intensity (31.25%).

Abstract

Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) is one of the primary pests in stored rice. Generally, pest control in the storage was done by spraying and fumigation using synthetic insecticide. The application of chemical insecticide using phosphine can cause resistant to insect pests and toxic to humans. Regarding the negative effect of insecticide application, the alternative control by using natural resources like inert dust is expected to be a good solution to control pests of stored products. This research was aimed to study the effectiveness of five inert dusts, which are: rice husks ash, volcanic ash, giant bamboo leaves ash, corncobs ash, coconut shells ash to adult mortality and the inhibition of population growth of R. dominica on stored rice seeds. The results showed that giant bamboo leaves at 8 g kg-1 caused 100% of mortality and faster than other inert dusts tested. Giant bamboo leaves and rice husks were more effective to suppress the number of eggs, larvae, pupae, and new adults (F1). Inert dust could decrease the hatchability of eggs, inhibit population growth, and decrease the weight of new adults (F1). The damage to the treated rice seeds was significantly lower than untreated rice seeds. Keywords: ash, control, inert dust, silica, stored product pest

Abstract

Fruit flies are important pests of citrus crops. Identifying fruit fly species is very important to make the appropriate conclusions in determining controlling methods. This study was intended to establish the dominant species, diversity index, and identification of fruit fly species in Siam citrus (Citrus nobilis Lour.) orchards in situs gacor777 Dau District, Malang Regency, Indonesia. This study was conducted in two habitat types: close and far from residential areas. Six petrogenol-treated traps were placed at each location from December 2022 to February 2023, and every two weeks, the fruit flies caught in the traps were counted as part of the survey. The results showed that three species, namely B. dorsalis, B. carambolae, and B. umbrosa, were found in locations close to residential areas, while B. umbrosa was not found in locations far from residential areas. The dominant species was B. dorsalis in both locations. The diversity index of Bactrocera spp. in orchards close to residential areas was 1.14 (moderate), and Spearman's analysis (0.913) showed a more substantial influence than in orchards far from residential areas. Climatic factors of air humidity, air pressure, and host availability play an essential role in the presence of fruit flies.

Abstract

The Putri Idaman Women Farmers Group (KWT) in Guntung Payung Village, Landasan Ulin District, Banjarbaru has cultivated lettuce hydroponically. In certain conditions, lettuce plant productivity that is too high can cause difficulties. The rainy season with high humidity will cause conditions for pest and disease attacks, considering that this plant is grown hydroponically, its control cannot be carried out using chemical insecticides, besides endangering consumers, it can also damage the environment. Socialization and training on making herbal pesticides from garlic have been carried out by the service team from the Agroecotechnology Department, Faculty of Agriculture, ULM. This activity was conducted face-to-face with lecture and practice methods starting from the opening, greetings, and then delivery of materials, practice, and discussion with participants. The activity participants numbered 44 people consisting of 34 members of the Putri Idaman women's farmer group and 10 members of the Iwapi group (Indonesian Women Entrepreneurs Association). The results of the activity evaluation from the participants on average answered agree and strongly agree from the six rubrics asked: activity service; suitability of service materials to partner problems; and interactive materials presented by the resource person. Twenty-three participants stated that they strongly agreed to participate again if this activity was held again. From the socialization and training activities for making herbal pesticides from garlic, it is hoped that it can become a herbal pesticide product that can be used sustainably in controlling hydroponic lettuce HPT by the Putri Idaman women's farmer group in maintaining the quality of their hydroponic lettuce products.

Abstract

The rapid urban growth in Banjarbaru City has significantly impacted the quality and quantity of green open spaces. Fragmentation of green spaces poses a major challenge in maintaining the city's ecological balance, particularly amidst high urbanization rates. This study aims to analyze the distribution and fragmentation level of green spaces across five sub-districts in Banjarbaru City using drone technology and spatial approaches. Data were collected through high-resolution aerial mapping and spatially analyzed to identify fragmentation patterns and compare them with the 2024-2043 Spatial Planning (RTRW) of Banjarbaru City. The results show that the highest fragmentation occurs in the Landasan Ulin and South Banjarbaru sub-districts, characterized by small patches and low core vegetation areas. Meanwhile, North Banjarbaru, Cempaka, and Liang Anggang sub-districts still retain extensive and connected green spaces. A comparison with the RTRW reveals a deviation between the planned and actual conditions, particularly in areas designated to be preserved as green open spaces.

Abstract

The ongoing land-use conversion in Banjarbaru City has significantly reduced agricultural areas, potentially threatening local food availability and the achievement of food security. This study aims to identify the distribution of idle land and assess its potential utilization as an alternative for agricultural development in urban areas. The methodology integrates drone imagery for mapping uncultivated land, agricultural and biophysical statistical data, and community perception surveys to evaluate readiness and constraints in managing idle land. The results show that idle lands are spread across all districts, with the highest concentration in South Banjarbaru and Landasan Ulin. These areas exhibit high potential for the development of horticultural crops and lowland rice cultivation, although technical interventions such as soil rehabilitation and improved water access are required. In conclusion, optimizing the utilization of idle land in Banjarbaru City can serve as an effective strategy to enhance local food production and strengthen area-based food security.
