Abstract

Background: Malnutrition is one of serious public health problems that still need treatment priority. Besides the problem of over-nutrition continues to increase, the problem of under-nutrition has not been resolved properly. Utilization of local food such as galohgor can be an alternative to meet the nutritional needs. Objectives: The present study was aimed to analyze the effect of galohgor cookies intake by postpartum mothers on the newborn’s growth. Methods: The design was quasi-experimental design. There were two groups including the control group (CG) (n = 9) and the intervention group (GG) (n = 9). Postpartum mothers aged 20-35 years (parity between 2 and 5) with normal delivery and had no medical indication were involved in this study. A total of four pieces of cookie (~ 4 g of galohgor powder) were consumed daily from the 1st day until the 40th day after delivery. Anthropometric data (height, body weight, and head circumference) were obtained on day 0, 14 and 40 after delivery. Meanwhile, human milk samples were taken on day 14 and 40 to analyze the levels of human milk insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I). Results: The newborns in the GG had significantly heavier weight and larger head circumference than CG on day 14 and 40 after delivery (p <0.05). IGF-I could be maintained by consuming galohgor during postpartum period. However, this study found no differences in body length of both control and intervention group (p> 0.05). Conclusions: Intake of galohgor cookies by postpartum mothers might support the newborn’s growth.

Abstract

The high catabolism and inflammatory responses due to the burn injury can affect the increase of free radicals resulting in oxidative stress condition that delays the healing process of wounds. Providing protein can help to improve protein loss during catabolism, as for antioxidants, they prevent the occurrence of oxidative stress situation. One product of protein and antioxidants source that have been developed is a liquid food formula made from Catfish and Moringa flour which were processed using nanotechnology. This study aims to analyze the effect of liquid food formula made from Catfish and Moringa flour processed using nanotechnology on Sprague Dawley rats with burn injury, especially on malondialdehyde levels and reduction in wound area. The design of this study was an experimental study with 6 experimental groups, namely rats with aquadest intervention (K), 15% liquid food formula (MCB 15), 30% liquid food formula (MCB 30), 15% nano liquid food (MCN 15), and 30% nano liquid food (MCN 30) that given for 14 days. The One Way ANOVA test indicated that there was no significant difference in malondialdehyde levels among all experimental groups. However, the highest decrease in malondialdehyde levels occurred in the MCN 30 group. Moreover, the MCN 30 group also showed the highest reduction in the wound area and was significantly different from the control group, MCB 15, MCN 15, and MCK 30, but didn’t show a significant difference from the MCB 30 group based on the One Way ANOVA test and a further test of Duncan.

Abstract

The PPM1K (Protein Phosphatase, Mg2+/Mn2+ Dependent 1K) gene is assumed to associate with retail meat cuts. This study aims to determine the association of the PPM1K gene polymorphisms with retail meat cuts among various breeds of Indonesian sheep. The Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) approach was used to determine the polymorphisms of the PPM1K gene in 130 Indonesian rams aged 10-12 months with body weights ranging from 20-25 kg. The association study between PPM1K and retail meat cuts was analyzed using General Linear Model (GLM). The research showed that the PPM1K gene was polymorphic, with three genotypes: AA (458 bp), GG (259 bp and 199 bp), and AG (458 bp, 259 bp, and 199 bp). The PPM1K gene polymorphisms were significantly (P<0.05) associated with breast cut, which is the breast muscle and bone. The GG genotype of the PPM1K gene had a higher value on breast lamb. This result implies that the PPM1K gene could be a potential candidate for marker-assisted selection for improving the lamb quality of Indonesian sheep.

Abstract

Patin (Pangasius hypophthalmus), a commercially important freshwater fish, is a rich source of protein containing both essential and non-essential amino acids, crucial for various biological functions. This study aimed to determine the amino acid composition of muscle tissue, oil, and bones of P. hypophthalmus and evaluate the wound healing potential of its oil extract in Rattus norvegicus. High-Performance Liquid Chromatography was employed to quantify the levels of essential and non-essential amino acids in each tissue. Results revealed that P. hypophthalmus oil exhibited the highest total amino acid content, particularly rich in histidine, arginine, and lysine. The wound healing activity of P. hypophthalmus oil extract was assessed in a rodent model, demonstrating a significant reduction in wound area (0.62-0.84 mm) and an impressive wound healing percentage (79-84.45%). These findings suggest that different parts of P. hypophthalmus possess valuable nutritional and therapeutic properties. Notably, the high amino acid content of P. hypophthalmus oil, particularly essential amino acids, highlights its potential as a promising source for developing pharmaceutical products, including amino acid supplements, wound healing agents, and formulations for metabolic support. Further research is warranted to fully explore the therapeutic potential of P. hypophthalmus oil and its bioactive components.
