Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze changes in body weight and cell morphology in liver, kidney and brain tissue of Sprague dawley rats administered  hypercholesterolemia diets for four weeks. Four diet treatments were applied in this study: control, catfish oil, catfish oil with the addition of omega 3 and catfish oil with the addition of omega 3 and vitamin E. Four weeks after the intervention, the rats were sacrificed and the internal organs (liver, brain, and kidney) were taken for histological preparations by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and immunohistochemistry test. The study showed that the catfish oil intervention tend to reduced weight gain of rats fed hypercholesterolemia diets. More lipid accumulation in liver of the control group was found than the intervention groups. However, there was no difference in the histopathology of the kidney and brain tissues between the control group and intervention groups. It is concluded that catfish oil study provides a positive effect in rat liver tissue, but no difference exists between the brain and kidney tissue. There is no defect found at hippocampus of rats by formed of amyloid plague.

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding is highly recommended to support infant growth and development. However, exclusive breastfeeding rates remain at 55,5%. One contributing factor is low milk production. Fennel seeds are one ingredient thought to increase milk production. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the phytochemical content and effects of ethanol extract of fennel seeds on milk production and pup weight gain. Methods: This animal study was conducted from March to September 2019. Animal maintenance was carried out at Biopharmaceutical Study Center, Bogor. A total of 24 lactating rats were grouped into four treatments (EA1:88,75 mg/kg, EA2:177,50 mg/kg, EA3:355,00 mg/kg, and N:control). The interventions were administered from day 3 to 21 of lactation. Data included phytochemical, milk production, and pup weight gain. The milk production was calculated indirectly based on the pup weight gain. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at α=0.05.Results: Extract of fennel seed contains flavonoids, phenols, tannins, saponins, and steroids. Milk production up to day 15 of lactation in N, EA1, EA2, and EA3 was 1,65 g/day, 2,67 g/day, 2,34 g/day, and 1,95 g/day, respectively. Up to day 15, there was a significant difference in milk production in EA1 compared to the control (p=0,047). However, milk production up to day 21 of lactation showed no significant difference (p=0,055). Pup weight gain was also not significantly different (p>0,05).Conclusion: Administration of EA1 significantly increased milk production up to day 15 compared to the control, but milk production up to day 21 and the pup weight gain showed no significant results.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between breakfast habits, the habit of bringing lunch, and the habit of snacks at school in elementary school students in Bogor City. This study uses a cross-sectional study design. This study uses primary data from a total of 1167 students in 161 schools in Bogor City. The study's results showed that 59.1% of students always had breakfast, 36.6% sometimes had breakfast, and 4.3% never had breakfast. The main reasons for not eating breakfast were school attendance (58.6%) and lack of appetite (42.8%). Most students (89.0%) consumed rice/noodles/porridge/bread at breakfast, with only 4.9% consuming all five food groups. The habit of snacking shows that 73.6% of students always snack. The most consumed snacks are manufactured food/beverages (81.3%) and wet/traditional cakes (71.8%). The habit of bringing lunch to children shows that 22.5% of students always bring lunch with 38.7% using it as a substitute for breakfast.  Parental education significantly correlated with breakfast frequency (p=0.000) and breakfast food diversity (p=0.031). Pocket money had a significant relationship with the diversity of snacks (p=0.002) and a negative relationship with the habit of bringing lunch (p=0.021). Breakfast habits showed a positive relationship with bringing lunch and snacks (p=0.000). Most students always have breakfast, but the food options are not diverse. The habit of snacking has become a culture for students, students who eat breakfast or bring lunch tend to continue to make snacks at school.

Abstract

Maternal nutrition intake, as well as nutritional status, influence breast milk production and nutrient content. To reduce stunting, the GAS KIPAS Stunting Program (Gerakan Anak Sehat – Kolaborasi Inklusif Pengusaha Indonesia Atasi Stunting) provided high-nutrient supplementary foods for lactating mothers. This program was implemented in several priority locations. This study analyzed the associations between contribution and the adequacy levels of energy and nutrients from supplementary foods with perceived breast milk sufficiency. Secondary data were obtained from the 2023 GAS KIPAS Stunting Program. This study used a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design without a control group. Nutritional intake of supplementary foods was obtained using the Comstock method. Statistical analyses included the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman's rank correlation. The results showed no significant association between the energy and nutrient contribution of supplementary foods and perceived breast milk sufficiency. However, calcium adequacy level showed a significant positive correlation (r=0.38; p=0.039). During lactation, mothers require increased micronutrient intake to support maternal health and infant development. Conclusion: Providing supplementary foods for lactating mothers does not directly affect mothers’ perceptions. These findings suggest that a larger sample size, measurement of milk production volume, and a 24-hour food recall may be needed to optimize intervention outcomes in supporting exclusive breastfeeding as a stunting prevention

Abstract

Low birth weight (LBW, <2,500 g) remains a critical public health problem, contributing to neonatal mortality and long-term risk of non-communicable diseases, and national estimates in Indonesia indicate a prevalence ranging from approximately 6.2% to 11.7%. Parity and interpregnancy interval (IPI) are important reproductive determinants of perinatal outcomes, and their effects may be modified by socioeconomic status (SES). This study aimed to investigate the association between parity and IPI with LBW and to assess whether SES modifies these associations in a prospective cohort of pregnant women in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 120 women (poor households n=48; non-poor households n=72) were recruited purposively from community health centers and a maternity hospital/clinic. Inclusion criteria were gestational age 26–35 weeks, maternal age 20–35 years, parity 1–2, non-smoker, and provision of informed consent. Pre-pregnancy BMI was obtained through maternal recall of the last measured height and weight before conception. Data were analyzed using Pearson’s χ² tests for baseline comparisons and stratified logistic regression models to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals. The prevalence of LBW was higher among women with non-optimal IPI (<24 or >60 months and primigravida) compared to those with optimal IPI (24–60 months). Multiparity showed a protective tendency against LBW, particularly among non-poor women. SES significantly modified the association between IPI and LBW (p for interaction <0.05). These findings suggest that multiparity may reduce LBW risk, whereas non-optimal IPI increases it, with SES acting as an effect modifier. Strengthening preconception counseling on birth spacing and targeted support for low-SES families are warranted
