Abstract

The revitalization of the traditional Gamav Aha house as a sacred space within Catholic ritual practice has become a central issue in the cultural and religious life of the Malind Anim community in the Sinai area of South Papua. The disappearance of Gamav Aha due to modernization has threatened not only the sustainability of tangible heritage but also the collective meaning and cultural identity of the community. This study aimed to analyze the process of revitalizing Gamav Aha as a sacred space through design adaptation, functional transformation, and meaning negotiation within the context of Catholic rituals. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, and fieldwork was conducted in July 2024 across three main villages in the Sinai area: Urumb, Waninggap Nanggo, and Matara. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with traditional, religious, and community leaders, and visual documentation of spaces and ritual activities. The findings showed that revitalization was realized through innovations in physical design, including adjustments in layout, structure, materials, and spatial orientation. The transformation of Gamav Aha from a dwelling into a temporary sacred space, enriched with cultural and religious symbolism, strengthened community identity. These results underscore the importance of adaptive design strategies rooted in local wisdom for the preservation of vernacular architecture and the reinforcement of social cohesion within indigenous communities in the modern era.

Abstract

The Old City of Semarang, as a national-level cultural heritage site, has inherited its function as a cultural center with unique architecture and urban layout that has remained. Over time, the development of the economy and high tourism demands exert significant pressure on the city's heritage. New functions with their commercialism often lead to inappropriate new buildings that potentially threaten the historic area's authenticity. Applying the infill building concept becomes a conservation solution that emphasizes optimizing vacant spaces in well-developed urban areas, including historic areas. Research has been conducted on several new buildings in the Semarang Old City that have changed in function and physical appearance. This research aims to analyze the existing conditions of new buildings and examine how infill development can be applied to structures in historical areas without damaging the architectural characteristics. The method employed includes descriptive analysis of observed objects by observing buildings, analyzed based on elements within the building infill approach. The results indicate that applying infill building in new constructions in the Old Town area requires a sensitive design approach, considering several elements, including mass, height, material color, ornamentation, and harmonious integration with the surrounding historical buildings. Additionally, it is suggested to the government that this research can initiate more detailed policies and active supervision regarding the construction of new buildings to maintain their authenticity. In conclusion, building infill can be an effective solution to support the economic development of historical areas without compromising cultural heritage, provided it is carried out with proper planning and regulations.

Abstract

Navigating complex shopping malls poses significant challenges for visitors, especially when it comes to efficiently locating desired destinations. An ineffective wayfinding system can lead to disorientation and confusion, thereby diminishing the overall user experience. As a multi-functional shopping mall, Uptown Mall Semarang requires a comprehensive evaluation of its existing wayfinding system to facilitate seamless navigation for visitors. On the other hand, this study aims to analyse various wayfinding elements, including architectural design, signage, and sensory information, to assess their effectiveness in aiding visitors' spatial orientation. The objective of this research is to evaluate the impact of wayfinding system on visitor navigation by examining five basic wayfinding elements: districts, paths, edges, nodes, and landmarks, as well as the role of signage in improving wayfinding efficiency in Uptown Mall Semarang. This research employs qualitative methods, using direct observation supplemented by documentation and interviews with visitors for data collection. The evaluation framework incorporates data triangulation, juxtaposing findings from interviews, observations, and literature on wayfinding architecture and signage that influence the wayfinding process at Uptown Mall. Preliminary findings indicate that Uptown Mall has several wayfinding elements and complementary signage. Overall, these components function effectively to assist visitors in navigating the mall. Nevertheless, challenges remain, particularly with regard to multiple entrances and intersections and the legibility of signage. As a result, there is an urgent need for optimization, which should include a blend of clear signage, intuitive floor design, and enhanced landmark visibility.

Abstract

This study explains that religion-based housing has significantly developed in Indonesia; however, the integration of local Islamic organizational traditions into modern housing and traditional villages has not been widely explored. The aim of this research is to identify the manifestation of Islamic values in the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) village of Sekarpuro and in the Bukit Az-Zikra Housing, Sentul. A comparative case study approach is used, employing Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space as the analytical framework. Data collection techniques include participatory observation, in-depth interviews with housing managers, religious leaders, and residents, as well as document analysis of relevant regulations and policies. The findings reveal a significant difference in spatial formation: the NU village of Sekarpuro organically embodies Nahdlatul Ulama values through historical social practices, while Bukit Az-Zikra Housing produces space through planned design by a foundation authority. The study concludes that the presence of central religious figures and strong community networks are key to the successful manifestation of NU values. The theoretical contribution of this research lies in the development of Lefebvre’s spatial theory by adding local cultural dimensions as a significant factor in the production of religious value-based space.

Abstract

The Buka Luwur tradition is a cultural ritual held annually on the 15th of Muharram in Kaliputu Village. This tradition serves as a form of respect to an ancestor, Mbah Depok Soponyono. The procession involves local community members who carry ritual items such as kain luwur (sacred cloth), offerings (sesajen), jenang (traditional porridge), and tumpeng (cone-shaped rice), all of which are considered cultural symbols. The ritual begins with a procession on foot from the main road of Kaliputu Village to the tomb of Mbah Depok Soponyono. This study aims to examine how the Buka Luwur ritual transforms public space into sacred space through meaningful cultural symbols that shape a temporary cultural space. A qualitative approach with a case study method was used, involving the subjective experiences of the local community. The findings reveal that the interaction between cultural symbols and collective community action can symbolically transform a space into a sacred one. Ritual elements such as kain luwur, offerings, jenang, tumpeng, and the procession route function as markers with deep spiritual, social, and cultural meaning for the community—signifying the construction of a temporary cultural space.

Abstract

Abstract: Public spaces are one of the most important urban elements in improving the quality of life for the community. However, not all public spaces are designed with the comfort of their users in mind. One example is the Raden Saleh Cultural Park, which is often used by the community. The quality of public spaces can be improved by strengthening the relationship between the public space itself and the community. In this case, a public space is designed with elements that can improve comfort in mind. With the Placemaking approach, public spaces can be designed with an emphasis on the four elements within them. Several previous studies have shown that applying the Placemaking concept can increase comfort for users. This study discusses the evaluation of the placemaking elements found in the object. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive analysis of the elements in the concept as a comparative study in identifying objects. This study aims to identify the placemaking elements found in the object of study, namely the Raden Saleh Cultural Park. Public spaces were chosen as the subject of this study because they are the site of many community activities. The results of this study show that there is a close relationship between the components of the object of study and its users. These elements will be very important in creating public spaces that are comfortable for the community in the future. Abstract

Public space plays a crucial role in improving urban quality of life by supporting social interaction, physical activity, and community engagement. However, many existing public spaces in Indonesian cities are not designed with sufficient attention to user comfort, inclusivity, and long-term spatial sustainability. This study evaluates the implementation of the placemaking concept in UNDIP Jogging Track Park, Semarang, by examining four key elements: Uses and Activities, Comfort and Image, Access and Linkages, and Sociability. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, supported by systematic field observations, spatial mapping, informal user interviews, and triangulation through spatial plan analysis and activity-based interpretation. Data were analyzed using placemaking indicators as an evaluative framework to assess the relationship between spatial configuration, facility distribution, environmental quality, and user perception. The results demonstrate that only 17 of 33 placemaking subcategories were fulfilled, indicating partial implementation of placemaking principles. Nevertheless, the park exhibits strong sociability, high activity diversity, and continuous daily use, supported by spatial integration, visual openness, and functional facility provision. The findings reveal a structural gap between functional success and comprehensive placemaking performance, particularly in aspects of universal accessibility, passive engagement spaces, micro-scale comfort, and inclusive design. This study uniquely positions campus-based public space as a hybrid socio-spatial environment, integrating academic life, public use, and everyday urban activities within a single placemaking evaluation framework. This study contributes to placemaking literature by providing an integrated user-centered assessment model within a campus-based public space context, offering both theoretical insights and practical implications for inclusive and sustainable urban public space development. Keywords: Placemaking Concept, Placemaking Indicators, Campus Open Space, Public Space.
