Abstract

Communicable diseases are a serious threat in early childhood. Therefore, it is necessary to educate children as early as possible. This community service, which has been done in two Pre-schools, Viadolorosa and Kamboja, aimed to increase the behavior of students in preventing communicable diseases through intervention addressing predisposing, enabling and  reinforcing factors. Intervention in predisposing factors was conducted through health education related to types of communicable diseases, prevention of communicable diseases and procedure of washing hands. Methods implemented were lecture, demonstration and singing and the media used included laptop, projector and visual teaching aid. Intervention in enabling factor was conducted thorough building a water container in each school as well as providing a package of health promotion kit. For reinforcing factor, intervention involved teachers, parents, and the head village as role models providing an example for students in practicing health behavior and as supervisors to help assess the impact of this project. As such, this integrated approach is expected to improve students? behavior in preventing communicable diseases earlier.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has mandated Graphic warning labels (GWLs) on cigarette packages to achieve more comprehensive tobacco control interventions. However, smoking prevalence remains a public health issue in Indonesia. This current qualitative research aimed to explore the effect of cigarette GWLs on smokers’ perceptions about smoking and cigarette packaging in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) and its influence on smoking behavior. The study participants consisted of 15 current smokers who were individually interviewed by using a semi-structured interview guide. Data were analyzed using a thematic analysis technique. Most participants perceived smoking as health-risk behavior yet lowered their risk perceptions of smoking-related diseases due to positive feelings of perceived current benefits of smoking and personal justification for smoking.  None expressed any intention to quit or showed smoking behavior changes due to GWLs exposure on cigarette packages. Participants also implicitly expressed themselves as victims willing to quit but unable and unconfident to act due to smoking addiction and other stressors. In contrast, others perceived themselves as risk-taker who enjoyed smoking. Further research is still needed to provide robust evidence on GWLs effectiveness on smoking perception and smokers’ cognitive and behavioral responses. Behavior change interventions should address positive feelings experienced and rationalization made by smokers to provide effective risk communication.

Abstract

One indicator of an individual's wellbeing is related to the nutritional status. The status is influenced by consumption patterns that can be determined by family conditions. Good nutritional status has a positive impact on learning achievement. The purpose of this study is to find whether there is a link between consumption pattern, nutritional status, and family characteristics on academic achievement. This research used an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional study design. The sample consisted of 118 children in grades 4 and 5 at SD Inpres Mokdale, Rote Ndao District, East Nusa Tenggara. Data analysis used the chi-square test with α=0,05. The results showed that there was no influence between parental education, parental work, family size and expenses on students' learning achievement. Consumption patterns and nutritional status also had no influence on the achievement. This research suggested that learning achievement can be influenced by other factors besides biological and family factors such as psychological factors, school environment, and the community support around the children.
