Abstract

Health protocols have been established to prevent and control the transmission of COVID-19. However, some people still have not complied with implementing health protocols. This research aims to determine community compliance with the COVID-19 health protocol using the Health Belief Model (HBM) approach in Kupang City. This study uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Eight key informants and two supporting informants were determined using purposive sampling. The research results showed that informants felt vulnerable to infection because they interacted with other people and were outside the home for a long time. In contrast, other informants felt they were not worried about the spread of COVID-19. Informants comply with health protocols because they know the benefits of health protocols as preventing the spread of COVID-19, perceptions of the benefits of other health protocols, namely wearing masks to avoid pollution, washing hands, and using hand sanitizer to keep hands hygienic. The barriers identified were difficulty maintaining distance outside the home and discomfort when wearing a mask. Internal cues for informants to comply with health protocols are self-motivation because they are worried about the transmission and impact of COVID-19 and external cues in the form of appeals from the government and work demands. The role of health workers, government, and community leaders in educating about the importance of implementing health protocols by focusing on the benefits of health protocols and determining sanctions for those who violate compliance with health protocols.

Abstract

E-cigarettes have become a trend especially among adolescents. This study aims to examine determinants influencing e-cigarette use in adolescents based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) in Kupang City. The research was qualitative with in-depth interview. The informants were nine male teenagers using vape. Snowballing was used to select informants. The results showed that all informants had the intention to stop using vape, but they found it difficult to stop. All informants knew the dangers posed by vape but continued smoking e-cigarettes, because vape was considered safer than conventional cigarettes, could calm the mind of vapers, and was also an alternative to quitting using regular cigarettes. Peers was found to have an influence in vaping as informants tend to imitate their friends’ behavior. Perception of behavioral control facilitating the continuation of vaping was related to the ability to buy vape from informants’ income or pocket money given by parents, the perception that vape was more economical because it could be refilled, and the difficulty to stop because of addiction while inhibiting factors were parental prohibitions leading to using vape when being outside of the house. Health promotion to educate adolescents about the harmful impacts of vape was necessary. Future researchers could explore barriers and strategies in vapers to reduce the frequency of vaping.

Abstract

Women of Childbearing Age (WCA) are at risk of breast cancer. Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) performed by healthcare professionals can help detect breast cancer early. However, the national coverage of CBE of 80% has not been met because the target achieved is only 13.7%. The coverage of CBE at the Bakunase Health Center has not met the target because it only reached 8.95% in 2023. This study aims to explore the experience of WCA in conducting CBE using the Health Belief Model approach. The research was descriptive with a qualitative approach. The informants consisted of eight women selected by using a purposive sampling technique. The results of the study found that informants felt susceptible to breast cancer if they had risk factors. The perceived severity of breast cancer was related to mastectomy and the risk of death. Breast cancer was considered curable with medical and herbal treatments. CBE was considered beneficial for informants because it could help detect symptoms of breast cancer early. Informants generally felt they had no obstacles to performing CBE, but some informants found it difficult to divide their time and felt afraid when deciding to perform CBE. The cues to act were encouragement from oneself (internal) and mass media, namely the internet, and advice from parents, husbands, and health workers (external). Self-efficacy in performing CBE was based on the informant's knowledge and experience. Education about breast cancer and CBE needs to be carried out regularly to increase knowledge that will encourage WRA to perform CBE.
