Abstract

Abstract: PT Sumatera Prima Fibreboard (PT SPF) is a private company that produces medium-density fibreboard (MDF). PT SPF made a green area in several locations in the factory environment as an effort to reduce air pollution, especially CO2 gas due to MDF production activities. The function of green area as a carbon pool has an important role in reducing and suppressing the release of CO2 emissions into the air. This research aims to determine the value of biomass and stored carbon reserves in saplings, poles, and trees rates, as well as understorey, and litter in PT SPF's green areas. This research used stratified purposive sampling methods. The saplings, poles, and trees biomass used non-destructive method by recording the species, and the diameter at breast height. Understorey and litter biomass measurements used destructive method by taking parts of the understorey and litter above the surface as samples. Based on this research, there were 13 saplings, poles, and trees rates species belonging to 9 families and 13 understory species belonging to 11 families in the research plots. The potential for saplings, poles, trees, understorey, and litter carbon storage in 5 green areas of PT SPF with total area of 16,673 m2 (1.67 ha) is 471,20 tons and classified as a good category.

Abstract

Long-tailed Macaque Macaca fascicularis is recently considered Endangered primate based on the assumption of rapid decline due to the heavy demand in trading. To look at recent data of this Endangered primate, we conduct a mega transect survey on 5 June 2022 and 10-15 June 2022, to assess the populatons on M. fascicularis along 115 km of Calik River, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. We use direct observation to census all individuals of M. fascicularis. Our survey found a total of 1.194 individuals of M. fascicularis were encountered in Calik River. Based on the survey coverage, it is presumed that the population of M. fascicularis in this area could reach 2.000 individuals. Due to the high population, it was confirmed that this primate has become a pest for the major crops of local people. In addition, no indication of hunting or observation of local people who keep M. fascicularis as a pet. Our survey suggests M. fascicularis is the most common species in riverine habitats.

Abstract

Thalassemia disease remains incurable and causes many complications. People with thalassemia major require routine lifelong blood transfusions. A main risk of transfusion is infection with diseases transmitted through blood, which is among the most frequent causes of death in thalassemia patients. Transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) include hepatitis B and hepatitis C. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of hepatitis B and C in thalassemia patients in Ciamis Regency and examine the relationship between transfusion frequency and these infections. The method was a cross-sectional study on thalassemia patients who received blood transfusions. The study included 191 thalassemia patients at Ciamis Hospital from January to June 2023. Purposive sampling selected 89 patients as the sample. Hepatitis B and C tests used immunochromatography. The prevalence of Hepatitis C Virus and Hepatitis B Virus infections in thalassemia patients in Ciamis Regency was 2.2% and 3.4%, respectively. The chi-square test showed a significant relationship (p < 0.05) between transfusion frequency and hepatitis B and C infection in thalassemia patients. This result suggests a risk of hepatitis B and C infection. Thalassemia patients are potentially susceptible to blood-borne Hepatitis C Virus and Hepatitis B Virus. These infections increase morbidity due to transfusion therapy. Routine inspection for Hepatitis B Virus and Hepatitis C Virus is essential for thalassemia patients. These results emphasize the need for strict screening protocols in blood transfusion processing.
