Abstract

Chicken meat (Gallus gallus domesticus) plays an important role in society with its role as one of the sources of fulfillment of animal protein in Indonesia. With the high consumption of chicken meat by the public, the hygiene and safety of chicken meat must be ensured so as not to incur losses to the people. This study aimed to determine the bacterial contamination based on the testing of Total Plate Counts, Coliform, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella sp. Meet the requirement of the Indonesian National Standard on chicken meat in the traditional market of Langowan Selatan District. The method used in this research is a descriptive method to analyze and describe the results of the study, the testing using several indicators to directly conclude bacterial contamination. The results of the total plate count bacterial contamination test of the colonies, TPC in sample 1 = 29,1x kol/, sample 2 = 29,4x kol/, sample 3 = 27,7x kol/. MPN of Coliform and Escherichia coli results obtained in samples S1, S2, and S3 are 11x kol/gr. The results of microbact Salmonella sp. In samples S1 are positive, and S2 and S3 are negative. Based on observations, it is suspected that contamination occurs because sellers use equipment that is less sterile and there is no cover or barrier so the chicken meat is in direct contact with the air and customer. It is concluded that based on bacterial testing indicators, chicken meat in the traditional market of Langowan Selatan District has exceeded the limit of SNI 7388 2009 and is contaminated.

Abstract

Algae are lower plants that do not have differentiated structures such as roots, stems, and leaves; although they may appear to have differences, they are actually just thallus forms. Macroalgae have macroscopic body shape and size consisting of fronds without distinct roots, stems, and leaves. Macroalgal diversity is not only reflected in their ecological and economic significance but also in their high species richness and wide geographical distribution within aquatic ecosystems. However, research on the species diversity of macroalgae in Budo Tourism Village Beach, North Minahasa remains limited. This study aims to identify the macroalgal species in the Budo Tourism Village, Wori, North Minahasa area. The research employed the line transect and quadrat-based sampling method, which was implemented at two distinct station locations: Station I (rocky reef substrate) and Station II (sandy-muddy substrate). Macroalgae identification was facilitated by utilizing the comprehensive identification textbooks. The research reveals the presence of four macroalgal species, comprising three brown algae (Phaeophyceae), namely Padina boergesenii, Sargassum llinearifolium, Turbinaria ornata and one red algae (Rhodophyceae), Gracilaria corticata. Sargassum linearifolium, Padina boergesenii, and Gracilaria corticata was found in rocky reef substrate. Turbinaria ornate and Padina boergesenii was found in sandy-muddy substrate.

Abstract

Suatu kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat pendanaan skema Pemberdayaan Kemitraan Masyarakat (PKM) telah dilaksanakan di desa Libas Pulau Bangka Kecamatan Likupang Timur Minahasa Utara dalam upaya mengatasi masalah rendahnya nilai ekonomi jambu mete karena produk utamanya hanya kacang mete kering dengan kemasan seadanya serta pemasaran langsung diantarkan kepada pedagang pengumpul di daratan Likupang. Pengemasan yang hanya menggunakan kantung pastik direkatkan dengan panas api lilin tentunya tidak dapat menjamin kualitas produk dan dapat bertahan lama. Melalui kegiatan PKM telah diaplikasi teknologi pengolahan jambu (kacang) mete dengan kemasan standar dan beragam produk olahan kacang mete serta dengan pemasaran digital. Metode pendekatan yang diterapkan yaitu diaplikasi Teknologi Tepat Guna dengan teknik pendekatan pembelajaran orang dewasa (Andragogik). Hasil kegiatan yang dicapai yaitu (1) terfasilitasi upaya peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mitra mengolah aneka produk kacang mete; (2) terfasilitasi peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan mitra memproduksi dan mengemas aneka produk kacang mete menggunakan vacuum sealer dengan plastic vacuum emboos; (3) Dihasilkan empat produk olahan kacang mete meliputi kacang mete kering, mete goreng mentega, mete goreng asam manis, dan mete goreng pedas manis, (4) Terfasilitasi upaya meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan pemasaran digital bagi Mitra; (5) Terfasilitasi satu aplikasi pemasaran digital.

Abstract

Skipjack Tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis L.) is a pelagic fish that dominates the waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This fish has unique physical characteristics, including an aerodynamic body, a metallic blue or teal back, and transverse stripes that distinguish it from other species. In Indonesia, skipjack tuna is abundant in the waters of Manado and Maluku. This study aims to determine the types of bacteria present in processed skipjack tuna floss (abon cakalang) based on morphological and physiological characteristics through biochemical tests. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach conducted in a laboratory setting. Data were gathered through direct observation of samples undergoing various tests and subsequently presented in a descriptive manner. Based on the identification data, 30 bacterial isolates were found in the processed skipjack tuna floss. The isolates were identified macroscopically and microscopically. The findings of the study reveal that the bacteria found in processed skipjack tuna floss, based on biochemical tests and profile matching, are suspected to belong to the Staphylococcus and Vibrio genera.

Abstract

Highlights: 1. This study found that Leucaena leucocephala leaf ethanol extract has the ability to stimulate the growth of vaginal epithelial cells in ovariectomised rats. 2. Leucaena leucocephala leaf extract can be developed as a safe and cost-effective natural alternative for hormone replacement therapy in premenopausal women and livestock. Highlights: 1. This study found that Leucaena leucocephala leaf ethanol extract has the ability to stimulate the growth of vaginal epithelial cells in ovariectomised rats. 2. Leucaena leucocephala leaf extract can be developed as a safe and cost-effective natural alternative for hormone replacement therapy in premenopausal women and livestock. Abstract Hormone replacement therapy has adverse effects that may cause additional health problems, such as hot flashes, cancer, ischemic stroke, and death. Phytoestrogen is an alternative ingredient used for hormone replacement therapy with less risk. The Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit plant is widely used as a medicinal ingredient and animal feed. This study aimed to determine the effect of Leucaena leucocephala leaf extract on the uterine weight and estrous cycle of ovariectomized rats. This research used a completely randomized control design, which included two treatment groups (P1 and P2) and two control groups (negative (K-) and positive (K+)) with six replications in each group (n=24). The negative control (K-) was given 2 mL of corn oil, while K+ received 0.1 mg/kg bw of 17β-estradiol. P1 and P2 were administered 250 and 300 mg/kg bw of Leucaena leucocephala leaf extract, respectively. The extract was administered daily by gavage for 30 days. Estrous cycle data were obtained on day 31 by previously collecting vaginal swabs twice a day for 15 days. After the rats were sacrificed under anesthesia using chloroform, they underwent surgery to remove the uterine organs for weight measurement. The data were analyzed for normality and homogeneity using the Shapiro-Wilk and Levene tests. The data distribution were not normal, so the Kruskal Wallis test was used to test the hypothesis. If there was a difference between controls and treatments, the analysis continued with the Mann-Whitney test (p<0.05). The controls and treatments exhibited a significant difference in the length of each phase and overall estrous cycle. The post hoc Duncan test revealed that the highest uterine weight was found in 17β-estradiol treated rat. It was significantly different with both extracts treated rats. Both extract effect on uterine weight were not significantly difference. In conclusion, administering Leucaena leucocephala leaf extract results in an increased uterine weight and a normal estrous cycle in ovariectomized rats.

Abstract

The snake-head gudgeon or payangka fish (Ophieleotris aporos), tilapia fish or mujair (Oreochromis mossambicus), and marble goby or betutu fish (Oxyeleotris marmorata) are economically important fish in Lake Tondano. However, numerous community activities can disrupt aquatic biodiversity, declining Lake Tondano environmental conditions, and other factors. This study aimed to determine the relationship between length and weight and the habitat conditions of Ophieleotris aporos, Oreochromis mossambicus, and Oxyeleotris marmorata. The method used in this study was purposive sampling with research stations located at Remboken (station 1), Kakas (station 2), and Tondano Estuary (station 3). Sampling was carried out 5 times in every 10 days. The weight and length of the fishes caught in Lake Tondano were 2-60 g and 1-8 cm (Ophieleotris aporos); 9-180 g and 6-25.5 cm (Oreochromis mossambicus); and 16-30 g and 2.6-26.5 cm (Oxyeletotris marmorata), all of them have an allometric growth pattern. Oreochromis mossambicus is the most commonly caught fish in all research stations. The research station with the best level of water fertility is Remboken Station. The habitat characteristic of Lake Tondano was 25-290C of water temperature; brightness of 1.34-2.66 m; depth of 4.23-11.8 m; pH of 6.7-7.8; and dissolved oxygen of 2.27-6.31 mg/L, which still supports the well-being of the fish.

Abstract

The existence of insects cannot be separated from the condition of their habitat. The mangrove area of ​​Tatengesan Village is one of the ecotourism site in Minahasa, North Sulawesi, that can support the survival of insects. This study aimed to determine the distribution and diversity of insects and the factors that influence the insect diversity in the mangrove area. The type of research used is descriptive quantitative research by conducting data collection activities, analyzing data and interpreting data with the aim of making a description of the events that occurred. The animals were exploratory collected by using insect nets (sweep net), beating cloth (beating), and bare hands (hand collecting). The results showed that there were 1225 individual insects consisting of 14 insect species, which were divided into 14 genera, 11 families and 6 orders of insects. The insect diversity index value was 0.27 which was classified as low. The dominance index value was 0.90 which was classified as high. The evenness index value was 0.10 which was classified as low.

Abstract

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the agricultural commodities that is widely cultivated by farmers in almost all parts of Indonesia. This plant is widely cultivated because varied consumption of papaya by the community makes the demand for fresh papaya fruit in the market always increase. Therefore, the cultivation of this plant is very important to be applied properly. Cocopeat is a powder which is a waste of coconut coir processing. Our previous research has shown that cocopeat is an organic material that has a positive role in the growth of patchouli seedlings. This study aimed to examine how the effect of the addition of cocopeat on the quality and quantity of growth of papaya seedlings (Carica papaya L.var.calina) on experimental land within the Universitas Negeri Manado (Unima) campus in Tondano. Experimental research was carried out with one factor, the concentration of cocopeat, with 5 levels 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50%. The control used was an organic media compounded by the analysis without using cocopeat. Each treatment and control was repeated 30 times so that the number of experimental units was 180 experimental units. Randomization was carried out by placing 10 rows and 18 columns at the Unima Patchouli Nursery Installation. The quantity parameter is the number of days the seeds germinated and the number of seeds that were successfully germinated in each treatment and control. Quality parameters include seedling height at the age of 2 months after germination (first germination); number of leaves, leaf size, wet weight and dry weight at 2 months of age. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the use of organic media with the addition of cocopeat at a concentration of 10-50% had a significant effect on leaf number, leaf size, plant height, stem diameter, wet weight, and dry weight of papaya plants in the early growth period. The addition of cocopeat concentration in the growing media will have an increasing effect on the observed parameters. Especially for the parameter of the number of days of germination after planting did not show a significant difference between all treatments.

Abstract

Sulawesi Island in the Wallaceae line area has diverse endemic animals, including the white-tailed forest rats. White-tailed forest rat (Maxomys hellwandii) is one of the endemic animals in North Sulawesi, so this study aimed to determine the type of bacterial genus in the small intestine of Maxomys hellwandii. This research used a laboratory-based qualitative descriptive method using a pour plate isolation method and bacterial identification based on morphological, and physiological characters with biochemical tests. The small intestines of Maxomys hellwandii taken from the South Minahasa forest area, North Sulawesi were used as samples of this research. The results of the study obtained 22 isolates of bacteria that were successfully isolated and have been identified based on morphological characteristics, and physiology with biochemical tests based on the book Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology suspected 14 isolates as genus Bacillus and 8 isolates as genus Lactobacillus.

Abstract

Blood glucose is a term that refers to the glucose level in the blood. The food type and physiological functions of the body can increase blood glucose. The right food can maintain stable blood sugar. One food source that can maintain stable blood sugar is tubers. One of them is daluga tubers which have a low glycemic index value. This study aims to determine the effect of giving composites made from daluga tubers for 42 days on the blood glucose levels of white rats (Rattus norvegicus). This study used a completely randomized experimental design with nine treatments and three replications. An experimental animal was given 30 g of food each day for 42 days based on the group of treatments. The drinking water was given ad libitum. Blood glucose was measured on days 21 and 42. The results showed that providing daluga-based composite feed to mice affected blood glucose levels (p<0.05). The feeding treatment was 100% composite 3 consisting of 30% daluga flour, 40% rice flour, and 30% corn flour, a daluga-based food can potentially be a food ingredient that can maintain stable blood glucose levels. So it can be concluded that composite 3 could be safe to consume by the diabetes patient.
