Abstract

Self-actualization is the highest level of psychological development that motives all human behaviors towards the full realization of a person’s higher potential life. This study aims at revealing Noah Calhoun as the main character of his self-actualization in The Notebook novel. The idea of self-actualization itself will be elaborated by using Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Moreover, this study is conducted by using qualitative method. The researcher generated the data from every chapter of the book, including dialogue, words, phrases, sentences which deal with self-actualization’s character. In dealing with the researcher’s purpose, it was found that Noah Calhoun has attained his physiological needs, safety and security needs, love and belonging needs, and esteem needs sufficiently and also the characteristics of self-actualized person. It can be seen in what Noah Calhoun did on the situation described in the novel.

Abstract

This thesis discussed two problems: analyzing the maxims violated by the main characters in The Age of Adaline movie and the reasons why the main characters violated the maxims in the movie. The researcher chose two main characters who were influential in building the story. This is research was conducted using a qualitative method of content analysis because it focused on understanding the phenomenon of language in depth. In this study, data collection was done by watching and reading dialogues in The Age of Adaline movie This result of this study showed that they were nineteen dialogues containing all types of maxims violated by main characters. In this study, the main characters violated the quantity of maxim more often in conversation because it provides more information than needed. The reasons for violating the maxims were saving face, protecting the answer, avoiding the discussion, pleasing the interlocutors, communicating self-interest and misleading counterparts. It was also revealed that the main characters most frequently violated the maxim to avoid discussion due to their dislike about certain topics such as identity and work which causes misunderstandings between the main characters. The reason the main character often uses was avoiding the discussion because in The Age of Adaline, the main character tried to avoid her true identity to avoid things that will make her identity known to everyone.

Abstract

This study aims to find women’s language features used by Elsa and Anna in Frozen II movie using Lakoff’s theory. This research used the qualitative method. The data were generated from the movie and movie scripts in the form of utterances and conversations expressed by Elsa and Anna. The researcher generated the data from the movie and movie script in the utterances and conversation. The result of the study showed that there were 35 data that contained women’s language features in the movie. There were nine types of women’s language features found in the movie. The women’s language features were found in the movie are Lexical hedges or filler, tag question, rising intonation, and empty adjective, intensifier, hypercorrect, superpolite, avoidance of strong words, and emphatic stress. In this movie, lexical hedges or fillers are the dominant women’s language features were found in this research.

Abstract

Women and men are different in terms of using language. Women’s language proved that women tend to use language differently than men, by the features use this research  focused on women’s language features and the function of those features. It aims to identify women’s language features based on Lakoff’s theory and also to identify the functions of language features that is used by main character in Ocean’s 8 Movie based on Jacobson’s theory. This qualitative research was conducted by applying  observation checklist to help the researcher to find out women’s language features. Data were taken from Ocean’s 8 movie  script in the form of women’s utterances. The result show that six features uttered by Debbie in Ocean’s 8 Movie (2018). They are lexical hedges or filler , tag question, super polite form, empty adjective, intensifier, and avoidance of strong swears words. Lexical hedges or fillers are the most frequent women’s language features used by Debbie in Ocean’s 8 Movie(2018). Then, the  language functions which are served by women’s language of Debbie in Ocean’s 8 Movie (2018) are expressive function and directive function.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and the functions of taboo and swear words used by the characters in Ted 2  movie. This study is conducted by using qualitative method and the findings are explained descriptively. Data were generated from the movie script, in the form of utterances, dialogues, and conversations that contain taboo and swear words. The findings revealed that most of taboo words used by the characters belong to religion. This study also find that the types of swear words in this movie are classified into two categories first are strong swear words and second is weak swear words. The strong swear words are verbalized by the characters showed the emotion and exclamation of annoyance. While the weak swear words which showed an exclamation of surprise. The reasons why the characters used swear words are to discredit someone/something, create attention, provoke and create interpersonal identification. Discrediting someone/something becomes the highest rank among four reasons. The characters in the movies often used it because they disagree with others, and the characters use swear words to protest for not complying with their wishes. Hence, learning and becoming more aware of how taboo and swear words are used in the literary work will help us improve our understanding of the linguistics phenomenon happened in the society.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the types of beauty register, the linguistic forms, and the language functions in the five selected beauty vloggers videos on YouTube. The design of this research was a descriptive qualitative. The data concerned were words, compound words, and phrases taken from two different sources: ten videos’ transcripts and ten videos. Data collection was performed through watching the ten beauty vloggers videos, reading the ten videos’ transcripts, and taking notes of the needed data. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. There were three results found in this research. First, the types of register identified in the ten beauty vloggers videos were casual and consultative. Second, the linguistic forms of each beauty register found were categorized into three divisions: (1) words, compound words, and phrases as grammatical unit; (2) noun, verb, and adjective as grammatical category; and (3) object and predicate as grammatical functions. Third, the language functions contained within all the beauty registers found were identified as ideational and textual. As the conclusion, the use of register may differ following to the social setting where the speaker is involved. Keywords: linguistic, register, language function, beauty vlogger

Abstract

Swear words as a strong language that is expressed by a person to their powerful emotion by Swan in 1995. The present study discussed the type and the function of swear words in Suicide Squad movie. This research is descriptive qualitative study whose data are in the form of utterances uttered by the characters in Suicide Squad movie that shown the types of swear words and their functions. In finding, the researcher found five types of swear words in Suicide Squad movie. Those are dysphemism, idiomatically, abusively, emphatically and cathartically. The researcher also founds the functions those of swear words as they functioned as showing anger or frustration, descriptive- evaluative, joke, surprise and sarcastic irony. The findings showed that abusive was the dominant type, because this type was mostly used by the characters in Suicide Squad movie. The implication of this research is knowing that swear words found in Suicide Squad movie showed that the characters in Suicide Squad movie used swear words not always to humiliate others or to express anger, but also to express their other emotions and to show friendliness.

Abstract

This research discussed slang words found in the movie entitled It directed by Andy Muschietti. This research aimed to find out the kinds of slang words and to know the function of slang words used in It movie. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative method. Regarding the research findings, there were two kinds of slang that have been found from twelve kinds of slang theory by Partridge. They are society slang and public house slang. Meanwhile, the next finding was the function of slang. The writer found that there were six functions of slang in It movie, namely to address, to form intimate atmosphere, to initiate relax conversation, to reveal anger, to humiliate, and to show intimacy. This research was expected to enrich the new English vocabulary used in daily conversation. The writer suggested the further researchers to analyze slang with another theory and use a poem, novel, advertisements, or song as the object of research.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study presents the syntactical analysis on sentence patterns in the selected songs of Taylor Swift’s Album Lover by using the theory of sentence patterns by Quirk and Greenbaum. This research also uses the theory of tree diagram by Bornstein to help the researcher in analyzing sentence patterns. In this study the researcher used descriptive method and content analysis approach. The data of this research are words, phrases, and sentences related to the analysis of sentence pattern especially in _You Need to Calm Down_, _Cruel Summer_, _Death by Thousand Cut_, _Paper Rings_, and _Daylight_ song. From the results, through the sentences chosen by the researcher, the researcher found that the largest number of the sentence pattern in Taylor Swift’s song lyrics is in pattern 3: S + Vt + dO which is used for 5 times. Finally, there are three patterns which are not used at all, which are pattern 1: S + LV + A, pattern 6: S + Vt + iO + dO, and pattern 7: S + Vi. Those patterns were not used because the researcher did not find any data or lyrics in Taylor Swift’s selected songs and selected sentences in Lover album that use any of those patterns.*Keywords:* Syntactic Analysis, Sentence Pattern, Tree Diagram, Lover’s AlbumABSTRAKPenelitian ini menyajikan analisis sintaksis pada pola kalimat di lagu-lagu pilihan Taylor Swift pada album Lover dengan menggunakan teori pola kalimat dari Quirk dan Greenbaum. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif dan pendekatan analisis isi. Data penelitian ini berupa kata, frasa, dan kalimat yang berkaitan dengan analisis pola kalimat terutama pada lagu _You Need to Calm Down_, _Cruel Summer_, _Death by Thousand Cut_, _Paper Rings_, dan _Daylight_. Dari hasil penelitian, melalui kalimat-kalimat yang dipilih oleh peneliti, peneliti menemukan bahwa jumlah pola kalimat terbesar dalam lirik lagu Taylor Swift adalah pola 3: S + Vt + dO yang digunakan sebanyak 5 kali. Terakhir, ada tiga pola yang tidak digunakan sama sekali, yaitu pola 1: S + LV + A, pola 6: S + Vt + iO + dO, dan pola 7: S + Vi. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims to find out the illocutionary acts uttered by the characters in the Finding Dory film based on Searle's theory and to identify the function of illocutionary acts uttered by the characters in the Finding Dory film based on Leech's theory. This study was conducted to further discuss how the characters convey the meaning from the utterances or dialogues. The utterances or dialogues convey the meaning that has a function that can turn speech into action. The forms of illocutionary acts represented by the characters in Finding Dory film were analyzed using the illocutionary acts by Searle's theory and also identified the function of illocutionary acts. This study was descriptive qualitative because the data were the utterances of the characters in the Finding Dory film. there were three-step that the researcher followed to complete this study. The first step is for the researcher selected the utterances or dialogues by three characters, which are Dory, Marlin, and Nemo in the Finding Dory film that contains illocutionary acts and categorized them; then the researcher identified the function. The second step is the researcher presented the findings by using the descriptive method. The last step is for the researcher to conclude from the findings. In this research, the researcher reveals that a good conversation can be called successful if each character can understand the meaning of the utterances conveyed by each other. In the Finding Dory film, the researcher found three types of illocutionary acts; they are assertive, directive, and expressive, and thus, the three types of functions of illocutionary acts; are collaborative, competitive, and convivial by the character’s utterances or dialogues. Keywords: Illocutionary Acts, Functions of Illocutionary Acts, The Finding Dory film ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tindak ilokusi yang terdapat dalam tuturan para tokoh dalam film Finding Dory yang dilandasi oleh teori Searle dan untuk mengidentifikasi fungsi tindak ilokusi tuturan para tokoh dalam film Finding Dory yang dilandasi oleh teori Leech. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk membahas lebih jauh bagaimana para tokoh menyampaikan makna melalui tuturan atau dialog.Tuturan atau dialog yang disampaikan mengandung makna yang memiliki fungsi yang dapat mengubah tuturan menjadi suatu tindakan. Bentuk-bentuk tindak ilokusi yang diwakili oleh para tokoh dalam film Finding Dory dianalisis dengan menggunakan teori tindak ilokusi Searle dan juga mengidentifikasi fungsi tindak ilokusi. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif Karenadatanya berupa tuturan-tuturan para tokoh dalam film Finding Dory. Ada tiga langkah yang peneliti lakukan untuk menyelesaikan penelitian ini. Langkah pertama peneliti memilih dialog ujaran dari tiga karakter, yaitu Dory, Marlin, dan Nemo dalam film Finding Dory yang termasuk tindak ilokusi dan mengkategorikannya; kemudian peneliti mengidentifikasi fungsinya. Langkah kedua, peneliti mempresentasikan temuannya dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Langkah terakhir adalah peneliti menarik kesimpulan dari temuan. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti mengidentifikasi bahwa percakapan yang baik dapat dikatakan berhasil jika masing-masing karakter dapat memahami makna dari tuturan yang disampaikan oleh satu sama lain dalam film Finding Dory, peneliti menemukan tiga jenis tindak ilokusi, yaitu asertif, direktif, dan ekspresif, dan tiga jenis fungsi tindak ilokusi, yaitu kolaborasi, kompetitif, dan convivial berdasarkan tuturan atau dialog para tokoh. Kata Kunci: Tindak Ilokusi, Fungsi Tindak Ilokusi, film Finding Dory
