Abstract

This study explores Wirid Hidayat Jati, a composition by Raden Ngabehi Ranggawarsita finalized in 1862, and its role in shaping Javanese Islam during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The text incorporates Sufi doctrines, particularly the principle of manunggaling kawula Gusti (the union of humanity with the Divine), which is closely related to the concept of martabat tujuh (seven dignities) in Sufi tradition. Employing a historical research design and textual analysis, this study collected data from primary sources, namely the Wirid Hidayat Jati manuscript, as well as secondary sources such as historical records, pesantren archives, and scholarly works. The data were analyzed using content analysis and historical interpretation to identify core mystical and ethical themes and to examine their influence on the religious practices of Javanese Islam. The findings reveal that Wirid Hidayat Jati, through its reading, teaching, and interpretation by santri and Ranggawarsita’s followers, contributed to the dissemination of Sufism and reinforced practices that harmonized Islamic principles with Kejawen values. As a spiritual guide, the text not only influenced devout Muslims (santri) but also adherents of Kejawen, and its impact continued into the early 20th century. In conclusion, Wirid Hidayat Jati reflects Ranggawarsita’s Sufi philosophy and demonstrates the formation of a distinct Javanese Islamic identity characterized by adaptability and cultural syncretism.

Javanese language lessons have been implemented in schools since elementary school. The decline in the interest and ability of the younger generation in reading Javanese script is a major challenge in preserving the cultural heritage of Indonesian literacy. This study aims to examine the transliteration strategy of the Serat Ngelmu Bumi Asia text as a pedagogical effort to optimize Javanese script reading skills in educational environments. Therefore, a study was conducted on grade X students of SMK Kita Bojonegoro to optimize Javanese script reading skills. The study was conducted using sources from ancient manuscripts and utilizing learning media to achieve optimal results. The method used in this study was a classroom action trial divided into two stages consisting of planning, action, observation/interpretation, and reflection. The results showed a significant increase in student abilities after the implementation of the transliteration strategy using learning media, with an average score increasing from the pre-cycle to the second cycle. Students who initially had difficulty reading Javanese script showed good progress, achieving higher mastery.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to comprehend the process of producing texts derived from written texts in the form of chronicles and developing them into oral texts of oral tradition or folklore. The object of this study is the Chronicle of Diponegoro and the traditions of Pasarean Gunung Kawi, Malang. The study method is based on descriptive qualitative research principles. The findings demonstrate that the Chronicle of Diponegoro does not mention the Pasarean Gunung Kawi figures directly. Because there are figures from Prince Diponegoro's war when facing the Company, the text of Prince Diponegoro serves as a background for the story of Pasarean Gunung Kawi. The two texts appear to be different, yet the second is an extension of an existing text. Following the narrative of the Chronicle of Diponegoro, there is a story about Kyai Zakaria, a follower of Prince Diponegoro who fled to Malang, East Java. Furthermore, the text on Pasarean Gunung Kawi was influenced by community situations, including the relationship between the Malang people and the Chinese community.

Abstract

Syair Nasihat (SN) is a classic Malay literary work written using Arabic letters/characters and in Malay. This SN contains various kinds of advice for humans to be able to achieve the happiness of life, both in this world and in the hereafter. This teaching is still considered very relevant to human life in the postmodern era, which is even further away from religious values. As a result, it is difficult for humans to find true happiness in every episode of their life. Therefore, a study on SN needs to be done so that postmodern humans can at least get inspiration to be able to find true happiness in the process of life. The research method used is the philological method. This method is intended so that researchers can present good and correct text edits. Furthermore, the edits are studied with content analysis, particularly those related to the quantum concepts of dhikr. The concept of quantum dhikr therapy is contained in the SN text, namely (1) oral dhikr; (2) heart remembrance; (3) mind remembrance; and (4) deeds dhikr. This quantum dhikr study is expected to provide an overview and simultaneously convince readers/connoisseurs of SN about the potential of dhikr that can be used as an alternative to strengthen mentally and spiritually, both during the Covid 19 pandemic and post-pandemic.
