Abstract

The challenges in English language learning, particularly in improving students' speaking skills, remain an ongoing issue in education today. The integration of gamification, as applied through the Treasure Hunt game, has emerged as a promising approach to address this problem. This study aims to investigate the impact of the Treasure Hunt game as a gamified learning intervention on the speaking skills of sixth-grade students at the Indonesian School in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest design, this study involved 40 students who took pretest and posttest assessments to measure their speaking skills before and after the intervention. Data analysis was conducted using a paired t-test to examine significant differences between the pretest and posttest scores. The results showed a significant improvement in students' speaking skills, with the average score increasing from 58.95 in the pretest to 70.53 in the posttest. This gamification approach was found to be effective in enhancing students' fluency, accuracy, pronunciation, and intonation, as well as fostering their engagement and motivation in learning. These findings affirm the potential of gamification as an effective tool for improving speaking skills in English language learning and preparing students to face the challenges of an increasingly interconnected world. The study also recommends further research to explore the long-term impact of gamification and its application in broader educational contexts.

Abstract

The research was motivated by the low learning outcomes of students, where as many as 57% of thirty students still needed to achieve the minimum completeness criteria (KKM). Moreover, in practice, the assessment of learning outcomes developed by teachers needs to be oriented toward measuring critical thinking skills. This study aims to describe the effectiveness of the Problem-based Learning (PBL) model with the integrated pattern of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) education in fourth-grade elementary school students. In this study, Borg and Gall's development research model was used, a process carried out to produce and test an educational product. The results showed (1) Each statement, both positive and negative statements, obtained an average percentage of 85.4% and was declared good; and (2) the average pretest score was only 32.7 and increased after the PBL-STS model was applied with a posttest score of 83.3. The average n-gain value obtained is 0.75 and is included in the high category. In addition, the significance value (2-tailed) is 0.00 <0.05, so the application of the PBL-STS model has a significant effect on the achievement of learning objectives (students' critical thinking skills learning outcomes), or  is accepted.

Abstract

This study explores the adaptation of the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) for Indonesian homeschool students using English as their second language. The primary objective was to assess the scale's reliability and validity in this unique educational context and to conduct a descriptive analysis of intrinsic, extrinsic, and amotivation scales. A sample of 26 students from Grades 7 to 11 participated, responding to an English-adapted AMS questionnaire. The findings revealed high internal consistency across all motivation scales, as indicated by Cronbach's alpha values (Intrinsic Motivation: 0.918, Extrinsic Motivation: 0.928, Amotivation: 0.868). Pearson correlation coefficients further supported the reliability of individual subscales. Descriptive analysis showed varying mean scores across different motivational dimensions. The study highlights the AMS's potential in diverse linguistic and educational settings, emphasizing the need for contextual adaptations. While the results affirm the scale's applicability in a homeschool environment, the study acknowledges limitations in sample size and suggests future research directions, including expanding the sample size and employing Confirmatory Factor Analysis for more comprehensive validation. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on academic motivation in alternative learning environments, particularly in the post-pandemic educational landscape.
