Abstract

This article describes the improvement of students` readingcomprehension achievement by using authentic reading materials from internet. Theresearch design is classroom action research and the research area was at SMPN 9Jember chosen by using purposive method. The data collection methods were a test,observation, interview, and documentation. The research subjects were the studentsof VIII-C at the school chosen purposively. The results of observation showed thatthe students` participation was improved from 77% in Cycle 1 to 82% in Cycle 2.The students` reading comprehension achievement was also improved from 77% inCycle 1 and 89% in Cycle 2. It can be concluded that the use of authentic readingmaterials from internet can improve the eighth grade students` active participationand their reading comprehension achievement. Therefore the English teacher shoulduse authentic reading materials from internet to teach reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve the seventh-grade students’ reading comprehension achievement by using K-W-L strategy at SMPN 2 Kunir Lumajang. Classroom action research design was used in this study with the 30 students of 7C class in SMPN 2 Kunir Lumajang as the research participants. The data was collected by using reading comprehension test to know the improvement of reading comprehension achievement and using classroom observation field note to know the strengths and weaknesses of the action. The criterion of success is at least 75% of the students got the minimum score of 65 in the test. The findings revealed that K-W-L strategy improves the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The students become more active and the activity of brainstorming their background knowledge before reding helps them most to get the gist of the text. Overall, the results imply that K-W-L strategy is good in assisting the students to comprehend the reading text.

Abstract

English is considered as the major foreign language to learn in Indonesia. English is mainly taught in Indonesian classrooms as a required subject, but it is not given as a daily communication language. Dealing with reading comprehension of English texts, English teachers seem to look for the most effective way to teach reading skill to get reading comprehension. One learning model that can be applied as an alternative for teaching reading comprehension is Project-Based Learning (PBL). This research used a qualitative descriptive approach. The data taken were interview of the students based on their experiences in dealing with Project-Based Learning (PBL). The results of thematic analysis showed: (1) The students’ perceptions on the English teacher’s overview in explaining the application of Project-Based Learning (PBL); (2) The students’ perceptions on the English teacher’s explanation about the meaning of Project-Based Learning (PBL); (3) The students’ perceptions on the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) in the classroom; (4) The students’ perceptions on the benefit of using Project-Based Learning (PBL) in the classroom; (5) The students’ perceptions on the difficulty of doing Project-Based Learning (PBL) task. The research findings and discussion revealed that those five perceptions were the students’ perceptions.

Abstract

Vocabulary has a very important role in learning English. Without having good ability in vocabulary, learning English cannot be achieved well. Therefore, students’ vocabulary achievement must be enhanced. One of the ways to enhance the students’ vocabulary achievement is by using online dictionary. This classroom action research with cycle model from Kemmis & Mc Taggart aimed to enhance the eighth grade students’ vocabulary achievement by using online dictionary and to know how it could enhance the students’ participation during the teaching and learning process of vocabulary. The research participants were the VIII J students of MTsN 5 Ngawi, East Java, Indonesia. The data were collected by using a vocabulary test and observation during the teaching and learning process of vocabulary. Quantitative and qualitative descriptive analyses were used to analyze the collected data. The research results showed that there was improvement of the students’ vocabulary achievement and their active participation by using online dictionary. The improvement of the students’ vocabulary achievement was from 67.64% of the students got target score in pre-cycle to 82.35% of the students got the target score in the first cycle. The improvement of the percentage of the students’ participation was 75% in pre-cycle to 83.7% in the first cycle. Hence, it is suggested for English teachers to use online dictionary in the process of teaching and learning vocabulary to improve the students’ active participation and their vocabulary achievement.
