Abstract

This research aims to explore the concept offered by Buddhayana regarding pluralism and the implications of the Buddhayana concept of pluralism for the relations between internal sects of Buddhism and other religions. Pluralism is an idea or method that recognizes and appreciates diversity within a community or country. This means recognizing that there are different viewpoints, values, beliefs, and cultures that can exist within it. Pluralism seeks to encourage tolerance, respect differences, and promote cooperation between diverse groups. This research uses library research and interviews which focus on figures from the Buddhayana Council as primary data, as well as related books as secondary data sources. The approach used is a sociological approach, which includes the concept of institutional structure as a conceptual tool. Its function is to integrate relationships and interactions within a social community. The concept of pluralism offered in Buddhayana values in dealing with the issue of plurality is the concept of active harmony. Namely the concept of coexistence with stronger associations and mutual appropriation from various traditions, schools of thought and sects in Buddhism. With the aim of showing the importance of avoiding grouping, sectarianism and forms of division

Abstract

The concept of kaly namitta, or good friend, is a very important part of Buddhist teachings. Two classic texts in the Buddhist canon, Sigalovada Sutta and Visuddhimagga, highlight the different but no less important role of kaly namitta in the spiritual development of a person. In Sigalovada Sutta, kaly namitta is described as a true friend who influences individual moral progress in everyday life. Sigalovada, the main character in the sutta, was instructed by the Buddha about the importance of choosing friends wisely, who would support the individual in developing good behavior and morality. Visuddhimagga emphasizes Kalyanamitta's role as a meditation teacher. In this context, Kalyanamitta acts as a spiritual guide who guides a person's meditation practice to inner peace and a deeper understanding of true reality. The meditation teacher in the Visuddhimagga is seen as a figure who holds a crucial role in the spiritual journey of a practitioner, guiding them through the various stages of meditation towards enlightenment. The differences in the emphasis on the role of Kalyanamitta in both texts describe different contexts and purposes in the teachings of Buddhism. Sigalovada Sutta emphasizes the importance of true friends in everyday life and their relationship with moral progress, while Visuddhimagga highlights the role of a meditation teacher in a person's spiritual development. However, these two concepts complement each other in one's attempt to a deeper enlightenment and understanding of Dhamma. This study uses a library study method with a Buddhist approach to analyze the differences between the concepts of kaly namitta in the two texts. The results confirm the importance of a proper understanding of these differences to avoid misunderstandings and deepen the depths of Buddhism.

Abstract

Buddhist education in Indonesia faces significant challenges and opportunities in future developments, especially in integrating spiritual values with the demands of modern times. This review and study analyzed the dynamics of the development of Buddhist education by reconstructing the Buddhist community's view of religious education and the advocacy efforts of the Buddhayāna spirit movement. This approach emphasizes building a collective consciousness oriented towards universal human wisdom and values. The reconstruction of the Buddhist community's view includes the transformation of the traditional paradigm towards a more inclusive, relevant, and adaptive approach to the needs of the millennial generation and the digital generation. In addition, the Buddhayāna spirit movement was introduced as an integrative strategy to bridge traditional Buddhism with modern education in both formal and informal realms. This movement emphasizes the importance of curriculum reform, the development of technology-based learning methods, and the strengthening of Buddhist ethical values in creating a generation that is not only intellectually intelligent but also wise and with integrity. The results of the analysis show that collaboration between religious stakeholders, government, and society is the key to the success of Buddhist education in the future. Applying the Buddhayāna spirit is expected to strengthen the position of Buddhist education in supporting inclusive and harmonious nation-building. Therefore, this research provides a strategic and practical perspective to advance Buddhist education in Indonesia through an innovative, integrative, and relevant approach to the existing socio-cultural context.

Abstract

The growing interest in mindfulness-based education highlights the need for approaches that integrate cultural and spiritual traditions to support students’ holistic development. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a Buddhist meditation retreat combined with mindful living education in enhancing mindfulness and compassion among students in Palembang City, Indonesia. Using a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test control groups, the research selected 120 students from a population of 170 through the Slovin formula. Participants were divided into experimental and control groups across junior and senior high schools. The experimental group attended a structured retreat that combined traditional Buddhist practices, such as mindful breathing, insight meditation, and loving-kindness meditation, with mindful living activities inspired by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings, including cultivating awareness in daily routines, deep listening, and compassionate communication. Data were collected using researcher-developed questionnaires. Results showed that the experimental group experienced significant improvements in mindfulness and compassion, whereas the control group displayed minimal changes. Baseline equivalence was established, and post-test comparisons consistently favored the experimental group. These findings suggest that culturally grounded mindfulness programs can foster emotional awareness and prosocial behavior in youth. Practically, the study encourages educational institutions to adopt mindfulness interventions and recommends further research with broader populations, validated instruments, and long-term evaluation.
