Abstract

Hydroponics is a method of cultivating plants without soil that is popular with Indonesian people. Its spread in Indonesia is supported by information openness via the internet and social media. Internet users reaching 77.2% have created a demand for hydroponic training. The urgency of training services is needed because hydroponic cultivation requires special skills. In the city of Bogor, there are business units that provide hydroponic training with limited face-to-face services which are very vulnerable to schedule limitations and social restriction policies by the government. The aim of this research is to formulate a strategy for developing a hydroponics training business in the city of Bogor. The approach uses qualitative methods with the Business Model Canvas framework to map digitalization adaptation and describe existing business models. Alternative strategies are formulated using SWOT analysis which combines internal strategic issues in the form of strengths and weaknesses with external strategic issues in the form of opportunities and threats. The formulated alternative strategy is implemented into the prototype canvas business model. Customer Response Index analysis is carried out to support SWOT analysis to obtain input based on responses from consumers. The research results found that digital adaptation was limited to business model marketing channels. Strength strategic issues lie in segmentation based on demand, service flexibility, and digital marketing adaptation. The weakness issue is dependence on one product and dependence on business partners. Strategic issues of opportunity are opportunities for product diversification, new partnerships, and conversion of training into digital products. The strategic threat issue is the opportunistic risk of business partners. The formulation of an alternative strategy recommends diversifying service products by adding services that are still in the hydroponics business line.

Abstract

The conversion of paddy fields seriously impacts rice availability for national food reserves, so the government is implementing a sub-optimal land extension program. Indonesia has sub-optimal land that has the potential to become a national rice barn if appropriately managed. The types of sub-optimal land most widely used in rice cultivation are lowland and tidal swamps, where the community can work. This research analyzes the determinants of rice farmers' decisions in managing sub-optimal land. This research was conducted in West Tanjung Jabung Regency, Jambi Province, with a sample of 90 rice farmers. Data were analyzed using the multinomial logistic regression method. The determining factors are seen from the demographic and economic aspects. The research results show that factors that significantly influence farmers' decisions to choose tidal land from the demographic aspect are age and farming experience; from the economic element are the number of family dependents, land ownership status, and non-farming income. The significant determining factors in farmers' decisions to manage lowland swamp land from the demographic aspect are age and farming experience, and from the economic element are the number of family dependents and non-farming income. From the research, recommendations that can maximize the use of sub-optimal land are increasing promotion and education to the community about rice cultivation on sub-optimal land, providing easy access for farmers to rent land, and it is hoped that farmers will continue to have non-farming income to balance household needs and procurement of capital and farming input.

Abstract

Cayenne pepper (Capsicum frutescens L) is a horticultural commodity commonly grown by farmers in the Merapi mountain region. The productivity and price of cayenne pepper have fluctuated significantly in recent years, both at the national level and in the Merapi mountain region. This study aims to describe the types, sources, and levels of risk, analyze and assess risk management in cayenne pepper farming based on risk levels, risk mapping, and total household income analysis of cayenne pepper farmers in the Merapi mountain region. The sample consisted of 100 farmers selected through simple random sampling, criteria including being residents who have been farming cayenne pepper for 10 years in the Merapi mountain region, growing cayenne pepper in the area, making cayenne pepper the main commodity on their land, and farmers who have sources of income outside of farming or do not have sources of income outside of farming. Data analysis includes risk analysis, total household income analysis, and quantitative descriptive analysis. In the Pakem District, the values for production risk, price risk, and profit risk are 67%, 8%, and 120%, respectively. In the Dukun District, these values are 55%, 14%, and 240%, respectively. Finally, in the Selo District, the values are 45%, 7%, and 84%, respectively. The analysis of farmers' household income is divided into two categories: farmers who have income outside of farming and those who do not have income outside of farming in each district. The highest average total household income of Cayenne pepper farmers is in the Selo District, with an average monthly income of Rp. 4,903,512. Important considerations in agricultural risk management include providing insurance for cayenne pepper, developing markets, and diversifying land use.

Abstract

This study aims to provide empirical evidence in the shallot production in Indonesia, what drives farmers to adopt chemical pesticide-free production as sustainable agricultural practices and its impacts on farmers’ income. By using national agricultural survey in 2014, this study employed logit regression and regression analysis to estimate the determinants and impacts of adoption of chemical pesticide-free farming practices among shallot farmers in Central Java. The results of a logit regression model showed that level of education, type of land ownership, participation in farmers group, source of fund, certified seed cost, and cost production were significantly associated with decisions to adopt chemical pesticide-free farming practices. The results of a regression model showed that farmers who adopted chemical pesticide-free farming practices had higher income. Aside the chemical pesticide-free adoption factor, the results showed that farmers’ income from shallot farming were influenced by level of education, harvested area, type of land ownership, cooperative membership, access to credit, access to extension services, and cost of certified seed. Future research may consider the different level of usage of non-chemical inputs among shallot farmers as the adoption is a process and dynamic, taking into account both other potential determinants of adoption and other potential factors affecting farm profitability, and focusing on shallot traders, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. Keywords: agricultural production, famers income, pesticide-free, shallot, sustainable agricultural practice

Abstract

Bank Papua is a financial institution that distributes KUR in Papua and West Papua. However, the KUR agribusiness sector of Bank Papua has decreased from year to year. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of KUR on the agribusiness sector and the factors that affect the performance of Bank Papua. Secondary data comes from Bank Papua, BPS Papua and West Papua. The data were processed and analyzed using multiple linear regression with the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) approach to determine the real effect of the independent variables on the dependent variable. The results showed that KUR in the agribusiness sector, loan deposit to ratio, net interest margin, and the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic were not significant, while operating expenses on operating income had a significant effect on return on assets. Bank Papua must be more efficient in carrying out its business activities by reducing operational costs and increasing operating income, one of which is by increasing KUR distribution in the agribusiness sector as an economic sector that absorbs potential labor and is a sector that can withstand shocks. Operating expenses on operating income that have a negative effect on the return on assets indicates that Bank Papua is not efficient in running its business because it suffers losses. This will have an impact on decreasing credit, especially KUR in the agribusiness sector as an economic sector that is classified as high risk. This is due to its perishable nature and seasonality, thereby hampering the government's goal of developing the potential of Papua and West Papua to improve the welfare and economy of the community. Keywords: agribusiness potential, KUR agribusiness sector, Papua Bank performance, regression multiple linear

Abstract

Background: Shallots are a commodity that is exceptionally strategic and economical regarding farming profits. One way that farmers can increase production results is by adopting technology, such as using superior seeds. Purpose: This research aims to describe the implementation of the SOP for SS Sakato red onion farming, identify factors that influence farmers using superior SS Sakato seeds, and analyze differences in performance between shallot farmers who use SS Sakato seeds and Non SS Sakato seeds.Design/methodology/approach: The methods used are qualitative and quantitative analysis, logit regression analysis, and propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. Findings/Result: The results show that the SOP adoption rate for shallots is 82%, with the highest SOP adoption being plant maintenance and the lowest SOP adoption rate determining when to plant. Factors significantly influencing farmers' decisions to use superior SS Sakato seeds in Sungai Nanam are farmer education, farmer income, access to production facilities, agricultural extension, land area, and seed resistance to pests and diseases. The use of superior SS Sakato seeds significantly positively impacts shallot production and farmer profit in shallot farming. The use of superior SS Sakato seeds can increase the income of shallot farmers even though the costs of farming are higher. The use of superior seeds should be able to reduce the costs that farmers have to pay, but in this study, the costs incurred by farmers remained high. Conclusion: Increasing the productivity of shallots can be achieved by using quality seeds, using shallot varieties that are highly productive, adaptive, and resistant to pests and diseases, and improving cultivation techniques according to SOP. Farmers who use superior SS Sakato seeds should comply with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to maximize shallot production. With an emphasis on increasing production, there should be support for farmers from seed breeding institutions to innovate in order to be able to provide superior seeds, support from technology-producing institutions, and support from extension services both from the government and the private sector.Originality/value (State of the art): This study describes that the use of superior seeds will impact the production and productivity of shallots, costs incurred by farmers, and farmer profits. Technology is an essential factor in influencing the production function; utilizing technology will have implications for increasing efficiency. Superior seeds are a technology that can have a long-term impact. Keywords: binary logit regression, propensity score matching (PSM), shallots, standard operating procedures (SOP), superior seeds
