Abstract

This study aims to provide empirical evidence in the shallot production in Indonesia, what drives farmers to adopt chemical pesticide-free production as sustainable agricultural practices and its impacts on farmers’ income. By using national agricultural survey in 2014, this study employed logit regression and regression analysis to estimate the determinants and impacts of adoption of chemical pesticide-free farming practices among shallot farmers in Central Java. The results of a logit regression model showed that level of education, type of land ownership, participation in farmers group, source of fund, certified seed cost, and cost production were significantly associated with decisions to adopt chemical pesticide-free farming practices. The results of a regression model showed that farmers who adopted chemical pesticide-free farming practices had higher income. Aside the chemical pesticide-free adoption factor, the results showed that farmers’ income from shallot farming were influenced by level of education, harvested area, type of land ownership, cooperative membership, access to credit, access to extension services, and cost of certified seed. Future research may consider the different level of usage of non-chemical inputs among shallot farmers as the adoption is a process and dynamic, taking into account both other potential determinants of adoption and other potential factors affecting farm profitability, and focusing on shallot traders, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers. Abstract

Bank Papua is a financial institution that distributes KUR in Papua and West Papua. However, the KUR agribusiness sector of Bank Papua has decreased from year to year. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of KUR on the agribusiness sector and the factors that affect the performance of Bank Papua. Secondary data comes from Bank Papua, BPS Papua and West Papua. The data were processed and analyzed using multiple linear regression with the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) approach to determine the real effect of the independent variables on the dependent variable. The results showed that KUR in the agribusiness sector, loan deposit to ratio, net interest margin, and the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic were not significant, while operating expenses on operating income had a significant effect on return on assets. Bank Papua must be more efficient in carrying out its business activities by reducing operational costs and increasing operating income, one of which is by increasing KUR distribution in the agribusiness sector as an economic sector that absorbs potential labor and is a sector that can withstand shocks. Operating expenses on operating income that have a negative effect on the return on assets indicates that Bank Papua is not efficient in running its business because it suffers losses. This will have an impact on decreasing credit, especially KUR in the agribusiness sector as an economic sector that is classified as high risk. This is due to its perishable nature and seasonality, thereby hampering the government's goal of developing the potential of Papua and West Papua to improve the welfare and economy of the community. Abstract

Background: Shallots are a commodity that is exceptionally strategic and economical regarding farming profits. One way that farmers can increase production results is by adopting technology, such as using superior seeds. Purpose: This research aims to describe the implementation of the SOP for SS Sakato red onion farming, identify factors that influence farmers using superior SS Sakato seeds, and analyze differences in performance between shallot farmers who use SS Sakato seeds and Non SS Sakato seeds.Design/methodology/approach: The methods used are qualitative and quantitative analysis, logit regression analysis, and propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. Findings/Result: The results show that the SOP adoption rate for shallots is 82%, with the highest SOP adoption being plant maintenance and the lowest SOP adoption rate determining when to plant. Factors significantly influencing farmers' decisions to use superior SS Sakato seeds in Sungai Nanam are farmer education, farmer income, access to production facilities, agricultural extension, land area, and seed resistance to pests and diseases. The use of superior SS Sakato seeds significantly positively impacts shallot production and farmer profit in shallot farming. The use of superior SS Sakato seeds can increase the income of shallot farmers even though the costs of farming are higher. The use of superior seeds should be able to reduce the costs that farmers have to pay, but in this study, the costs incurred by farmers remained high. Conclusion: Increasing the productivity of shallots can be achieved by using quality seeds, using shallot varieties that are highly productive, adaptive, and resistant to pests and diseases, and improving cultivation techniques according to SOP. Farmers who use superior SS Sakato seeds should comply with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to maximize shallot production. With an emphasis on increasing production, there should be support for farmers from seed breeding institutions to innovate in order to be able to provide superior seeds, support from technology-producing institutions, and support from extension services both from the government and the private sector.Originality/value (State of the art): This study describes that the use of superior seeds will impact the production and productivity of shallots, costs incurred by farmers, and farmer profits. Technology is an essential factor in influencing the production function; utilizing technology will have implications for increasing efficiency. Superior seeds are a technology that can have a long-term impact. Keywords: binary logit regression, propensity score matching (PSM), shallots, standard operating procedures (SOP), superior seeds

Abstract

Smart farming technology has been developed with Agriculture 4.0 to improve productivity and yield quality and solve challenges such as climate change, labor shortage due to regeneration difficulties, and resource efficiency. The objectives of this study were to analyze (1) the characteristics of farmers and chili production using smart fertigation and (2) the cost structure, revenue, profit, and efficiency. The study used primary data from interviews with 83 farmers in Central and East Java. Analytical methods included descriptive statistics, Cobb-Douglas production functions, and R/C. The results showed that smart fertigation farmers, who represented 2% of the total, had higher education (17 years), longer training (124 days), and significant participation in farmer groups (100%). The role of smart fertigation in chili production is to increase productivity (from 8.35 t/ha to 20.67 t/ha), reduce fertilizer use (from 26.730 t/ha to 8.540 t/ha) and reduce labor requirements from 748.17 HOK/ha to 609.33 HOK/ha. Despite the higher farm costs/ha with smart fertigation, the higher total revenue (due to increased productivity and selling price) results in higher profit and efficiency (R/C). Abstract

Background: Challenges farmers face such as low bargaining power, difficulty accessing information regarding farming and marketing of production can be overcome if catfish farmers are active in fish farmers’ groups. Fish farming groups were formed to increase their members' farming income, through implementing fisheries businesses supported by infrastructure assistance from the Government. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the role of fish farmers groups towards members, analyze catfish on farm income, and analyze differences in income based on participation in farming groups. Design/methodology/approach: This study used a non-probability sampling method to sample 100 catfish farmers which is divided into 51 members and 49 non-members of the fish farming group. The method used is quantitative analysis using Endogenous Switching Regression (ESR) model analysis. Findings/Result: The results of the research show that the fish farmers group has a sufficient role as a place for teaching and learning, a place for cooperation and production units, and the rho (ρ) value in the ESR model estimation shows that participation in farmers group has a positive impact on the income of members of catfish farming, namely that members' on farm income is greater than the income of random sample individuals and the income of non-members of the fish farmers group. Conclusion: Role and participation in fish farming groups have a positive impact on members' on farm income, namely members' income is greater than non-members, and members' on farm income can increase.Originality/value (State of the art): This research uses exogenous and endogenous variables which together in the ESR method can influence participation decisions in fish farming groups. Research by Mutiara et al. (2023) used a questionnaire to analyze the role of cultivation groups qualitatively, while in the research, apart from using a questionnaire with a Likert scale, empirical evidence was also carried out using the ESR model. Abstract

The use of certified seed is essential for sugarcane agricultural intensification method, emphasizing input quality improvements. In this context, varietal validity has the potential to increase sugarcane output volumes and ensure quality variations. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the variables affecting farmers' decisions on seed varieties, output, and revenue. The type of data used was cross-sectional with a sample of 1,763 respondents, consisting of 303 and 1,460 adopter and non-adopter farmers, respectively. Propensity score matching and logistic regression were the analysis methods used. The results showed that farmers' age, number of workers, land ownership status, extension participation, and partnerships significantly influenced the decisions in selecting seed types. Significant variations in output, gross income, total expenses, net income, and net earnings were also reported using statistical test analysis, with certified seed adopters having higher profits. In this context, young farmers should be targeted to promote the use of certified seed, provide sufficient labor support for intensive farming, ease access to land, and enhance persuasive messages about partnership benefits. Moreover, ensuring the continuity of production and distribution was important to maintain reasonable seed prices and facilitate farmers' access.

Abstract

Background: Production and the number of smallholder rubber farmers in Muaro Jambi Regency have decreased over the past ten years. The decrease in production and the number of rubber farmers are believed to be caused by a decrease in the labor allocation in rubber plantations. Rubber farmers now focus on more than just one commodity, and farmers have diversified their income resources, such as oil palm plantations and off-farm work. As a result, household economic decisions will be related to labor allocation. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the labor allocation in rubber farmer households and identify the factors influencing labor allocation in rubber plantations in the Muaro Jambi Regency.Design/methodology/approach: This research used primary data from one hundred rubber households using a multistage random sampling method. The estimation was done in two steps: in the first step, shadow wages were estimated using the production function to get the value marginal product of labor, and in the second step, the instrumental variable method was used to determine the factors influencing labor allocation in rubber plantations. Findings/Results: The estimation shows that shadow wages, oil palm labor allocation, and non-rubber income significantly influence rubber labor allocation. This result indicates that the existence of oil palm plantations does not cause a decrease in rubber labor allocation, and shadow wages can be a determining factor in labor allocation. Originality/value (State of the art): This study focuses on how rubber farmer households allocate their labor across rubber plantations, other farms, and off-farm work in the context of the presence of other commodities, particularly oil palm, which is developing alongside rubber in the research area. The results show how farmers make decisions regarding their rubber plantations, switch to oil palm, or do off-farm work, which is the reason why they began reducing labor allocation to their rubber farms. Keywords: labor allocation, household economics, shadow wages, instrumental variable, rubber plantations

Abstract

Indonesian rubber plantations are experiencing a fluctuating productivity trend due to difficult capital access, which is one of the problems faced by farmers. Agricultural credit serves as an alternative solution to this issue. Financial credit serves as a solution to address the capital issues faced by farmers, as the additional capital from credit can be used to enhance input utilization, thereby optimizing production. This research aims to analyze the impact of credit use on rubber farming in South Sumatra Province. This research uses secondary data, specifically the 2014 Agricultural Household Survey data from the Central Statistics Agency. The respondent farmers totaled 4,924 rubber farmers in South Sumatra, consisting of 98 farmers who took credit and 4,826 farmers who did not take credit. South Sumatra was chosen as the research location because it is the province with the largest natural rubber production in Indonesia. The methods used were the descriptive method and propensity score matching (PSM) to assess the impact of credit on rubber farming income. The results showed that the largest expense for rubber farming in South Sumatra was the labor cost component within the family, indicating that rubber farming in South Sumatra remains labor-intensive. The allocation of credit funds that has not yet been accurately targeted in agriculture as a whole is a factor contributing to the insignificance of credit in increasing farmers income. Therefore, there is a need for extension services related to financial literacy so that credit funds can be optimized in agricultural practices.
