Abstract

Smart farming technology has been developed with Agriculture 4.0 to improve productivity and yield quality and solve challenges such as climate change, labor shortage due to regeneration difficulties, and resource efficiency. The objectives of this study were to analyze (1) the characteristics of farmers and chili production using smart fertigation and (2) the cost structure, revenue, profit, and efficiency. The study used primary data from interviews with 83 farmers in Central and East Java. Analytical methods included descriptive statistics, Cobb-Douglas production functions, and R/C. The results showed that smart fertigation farmers, who represented 2% of the total, had higher education (17 years), longer training (124 days), and significant participation in farmer groups (100%). The role of smart fertigation in chili production is to increase productivity (from 8.35 t/ha to 20.67 t/ha), reduce fertilizer use (from 26.730 t/ha to 8.540 t/ha) and reduce labor requirements from 748.17 HOK/ha to 609.33 HOK/ha. Despite the higher farm costs/ha with smart fertigation, the higher total revenue (due to increased productivity and selling price) results in higher profit and efficiency (R/C). Keywords: smart fertigation, chili farming, adoption decisions, cost savings

Abstract

Background: Challenges farmers face such as low bargaining power, difficulty accessing information regarding farming and marketing of production can be overcome if catfish farmers are active in fish farmers’ groups. Fish farming groups were formed to increase their members' farming income, through implementing fisheries businesses supported by infrastructure assistance from the Government. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the role of fish farmers groups towards members, analyze catfish on farm income, and analyze differences in income based on participation in farming groups. Design/methodology/approach: This study used a non-probability sampling method to sample 100 catfish farmers which is divided into 51 members and 49 non-members of the fish farming group. The method used is quantitative analysis using Endogenous Switching Regression (ESR) model analysis. Findings/Result: The results of the research show that the fish farmers group has a sufficient role as a place for teaching and learning, a place for cooperation and production units, and the rho (ρ) value in the ESR model estimation shows that participation in farmers group has a positive impact on the income of members of catfish farming, namely that members' on farm income is greater than the income of random sample individuals and the income of non-members of the fish farmers group. Conclusion: Role and participation in fish farming groups have a positive impact on members' on farm income, namely members' income is greater than non-members, and members' on farm income can increase.Originality/value (State of the art): This research uses exogenous and endogenous variables which together in the ESR method can influence participation decisions in fish farming groups. Research by Mutiara et al. (2023) used a questionnaire to analyze the role of cultivation groups qualitatively, while in the research, apart from using a questionnaire with a Likert scale, empirical evidence was also carried out using the ESR model. Abstract

The use of certified seed is essential for sugarcane agricultural intensification method, emphasizing input quality improvements. In this context, varietal validity has the potential to increase sugarcane output volumes and ensure quality variations. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the variables affecting farmers' decisions on seed varieties, output, and revenue. The type of data used was cross-sectional with a sample of 1,763 respondents, consisting of 303 and 1,460 adopter and non-adopter farmers, respectively. Propensity score matching and logistic regression were the analysis methods used. The results showed that farmers' age, number of workers, land ownership status, extension participation, and partnerships significantly influenced the decisions in selecting seed types. Significant variations in output, gross income, total expenses, net income, and net earnings were also reported using statistical test analysis, with certified seed adopters having higher profits. In this context, young farmers should be targeted to promote the use of certified seed, provide sufficient labor support for intensive farming, ease access to land, and enhance persuasive messages about partnership benefits. Moreover, ensuring the continuity of production and distribution was important to maintain reasonable seed prices and facilitate farmers' access.

Abstract

Background: Production and the number of smallholder rubber farmers in Muaro Jambi Regency have decreased over the past ten years. The decrease in production and the number of rubber farmers are believed to be caused by a decrease in the labor allocation in rubber plantations. Rubber farmers now focus on more than just one commodity, and farmers have diversified their income resources, such as oil palm plantations and off-farm work. As a result, household economic decisions will be related to labor allocation. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the labor allocation in rubber farmer households and identify the factors influencing labor allocation in rubber plantations in the Muaro Jambi Regency.Design/methodology/approach: This research used primary data from one hundred rubber households using a multistage random sampling method. The estimation was done in two steps: in the first step, shadow wages were estimated using the production function to get the value marginal product of labor, and in the second step, the instrumental variable method was used to determine the factors influencing labor allocation in rubber plantations. Findings/Results: The estimation shows that shadow wages, oil palm labor allocation, and non-rubber income significantly influence rubber labor allocation. This result indicates that the existence of oil palm plantations does not cause a decrease in rubber labor allocation, and shadow wages can be a determining factor in labor allocation. Originality/value (State of the art): This study focuses on how rubber farmer households allocate their labor across rubber plantations, other farms, and off-farm work in the context of the presence of other commodities, particularly oil palm, which is developing alongside rubber in the research area. The results show how farmers make decisions regarding their rubber plantations, switch to oil palm, or do off-farm work, which is the reason why they began reducing labor allocation to their rubber farms. Abstract

As domestic demand for organic products increases, price is a major constraint on purchasing organic products. Therefore, a large group of consumers still do not purchase organic products while some consumers purchase them regularly. The aim of this research is to examine the willingness to pay (WTP) of organic rice consumers in West Sumatera and its determinants. The research used a primary data from survey of 100 organic rice consumers of modern market in West Sumatera. The data were analysed using contingent valuation method and logistic regression. The research results showed that consumers' the willingness to pay (WTP) is different for red and white organic rice compared with what they paid for current market price of organic rice in West Sumatera. Consumers' willingness to pay for organic brown rice is 2% higher, while for organic white rice it is 0.01% lower than the offer price. The main reason consumers don't want to spend more money is that the prices offered are already quite high. The results also showed that the significant determinants of organic rice consumers' willingness to pay (WTP) are income, organic rice price and healthy lifestyle. The determinants of age, gender, education, health issues, quality, packaging and product access do not significantly influence willingness to pay for organic rice in West Sumatra. The results can be used for formulating pricing strategies of organic rice in local market.

Abstract

Indonesian rubber plantations are experiencing a fluctuating productivity trend due to difficult capital access, which is one of the problems faced by farmers. Agricultural credit serves as an alternative solution to this issue. Financial credit serves as a solution to address the capital issues faced by farmers, as the additional capital from credit can be used to enhance input utilization, thereby optimizing production. This research aims to analyze the impact of credit use on rubber farming in South Sumatra Province. This research uses secondary data, specifically the 2014 Agricultural Household Survey data from the Central Statistics Agency. The respondent farmers totaled 4,924 rubber farmers in South Sumatra, consisting of 98 farmers who took credit and 4,826 farmers who did not take credit. South Sumatra was chosen as the research location because it is the province with the largest natural rubber production in Indonesia. The methods used were the descriptive method and propensity score matching (PSM) to assess the impact of credit on rubber farming income. The results showed that the largest expense for rubber farming in South Sumatra was the labor cost component within the family, indicating that rubber farming in South Sumatra remains labor-intensive. The allocation of credit funds that has not yet been accurately targeted in agriculture as a whole is a factor contributing to the insignificance of credit in increasing farmers income. Therefore, there is a need for extension services related to financial literacy so that credit funds can be optimized in agricultural practices.

Abstract

The agricultural sector is a contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and a vulnerable victim of climate change at the same time. Climate change has affected food stability and security, including rice. It is an essential commodity to pay attention to in terms of quantity, quality, and continuity. ice cultivation practices can threaten it. Climate-smart rice cultivation (CSRC) can be a solution and needs to be introduced to respond to these challenges. CSRC is one of the programs carried out by The World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) through The ‘Rejoso Kita Phase 2’ project in Pasuruan District to respond to existing farming practices that are unsustainable, such as excessive use of rice seeds, water for irrigation, fertilizer use, and pesticide use. This study aims to determine the production factors of CSRC using the transcendental logarithmic (Translog) production function approach. One hundred sixty-eight farmers in Pasuruan were involved in the farmer household survey collected through a structured digital questionnaire. The constructed production function model utilized nine variables. Seeds, N fertilizer, P fertilizer, K fertilizer, chemical pesticide, and chemical pesticide variables were statistically significant, with only variable of K fertilizer having a negative effect. Meanwhile, land size, organic fertilizer, and labor are not significant. The average productivity of farmers is higher than the average productivity of Pasuruan District. Combating global warming can be achieved without sacrificing yields, and it can provide a better understanding to encourage wider adoption of CSRC innovation technology. Intensive extension and mentoring related to CSRC components for farmers is an essential policy implication that needs to be implemented to maximize rice productivity and reduce negative externalities.
