Abstract

This study examines the sociolinguistic functions of slang variations in the lyrical repertoire of rapper Dax, an artist notably absent from existing academic literature despite his significant cultural impact. Applying Eble’s theoretical framework of slang effects, this research employs qualitative analysis of four commercially successful songs spanning Dax’s creative evolution from 2018 to 2023. The methodology integrates computational screening with rigorous validation through Green’s Dictionary of Slang, ensuring lexicographical authority. Findings reveal 27 validated slang expressions functioning as sophisticated rhetorical instruments that simultaneously cultivate informality, signal group identification, and articulate opposition to authority. The analysis demonstrates Dax’s artistic progression from establishing hip-hop authenticity through multifaceted slang usage toward more focused explorations of spiritual turmoil and systemic critique. Theoretically, this study extends Eble’s framework to contemporary musical discourse, revealing slang’s multidimensional role in constructing identity and negotiating social meaning. Practically, it offers pedagogical applications for bridging sociolinguistic theory with authentic language practices. This investigation advances the field by documenting understudied linguistic phenomena in popular culture while providing a replicable model for analyzing vernacular speech in artistic contexts.

Abstract

This research explores the variations in language register between lecturers and students on Twitter within the post-pandemic academic discourse context. Employing Biber and Conrad's theory of register, genre, and style as a guiding framework, the study analyzes tweets to unveil distinct linguistic features associated with the social roles of educators and learners. Lecturer tweets exhibit a supportive and motivational language style, aligning with their role as facilitators of learning and experts in their field. Student tweets, on the other hand, express frustrations, financial concerns, and societal critique, reflecting the impacts of the broader context of the pandemic on education and personal experiences. The analysis draws on sociolinguistic theories, critical discourse analysis, and genre analysis to interpret the linguistic choices made by both groups. The findings underscore the dynamic relationship between language use and social roles on Twitter, providing insights into how educators and students articulate experiences and challenges within the digital academic community in the post-pandemic era. Future research opportunities include exploring language evolution over time, analyzing engagement dynamics on social media platforms, and investigating regional language variations in academic discourse. Ultimately, this study contributes to the understanding of language use in online academic settings, emphasizing the intricate interplay between language, social roles, and contextual factors within digital communication landscapes.

Abstract

This study look into the revival of Palang Pintu tradition as a key cultural practice in Betawi Society, emphasizing on its role in maintaining local heritage and cultural identity in the face of modernizing problems. Palang Pintu, which is a traditional part of Betawi weddings, uses poetry, martial arts (Silat), and religious expression to represent hospitality, strength, and bargaining. However, the rapid growth of Jakarta's metropolitan culture has slowly pushed this practice to the edges, making people worry about how long it will last and how important it is in today's world. Qualitative research was used in this study. Ethnographic observation, interviews with cultural leaders, the arts, linguists, and Betawi society were all used in this study. The findings show that three interrelated strategies have been used to carry out revitalization: boosting cultural education in schools and community-based organizations; integrating Palang Pintu into the tourism and creative industries; and utilizing digital platforms to increase public exposure and facilitate intergenerational transmission. In addition to preserving Betawi cultural identity, these initiatives promote intercultural interaction and aid in the development of more inclusive cultural policies in Indonesia. This study confirms that Palang Pintu serves as a cultural symbol that strengthens social solidarity and collective memory among the Betawi people, going beyond a ritualistic display. The resurgence of this custom in contemporary times illustrates the resilience of local heritage amidst globalization, providing valuable insights for sustainable cultural preservation. To enhance scholarly debate on protecting intangible cultural assets in heterogeneous cultures, future study is advised to investigate revitalization approaches among various ethnic communities.
