Abstract

Dependence on fossil fuels requires a solution through alternative fuels. Ethanol is the recommended solution because it is easy to produce using raw materials that are abundant in nature, such as mangrove fruit. The Rhizophora Mucronata type of mangrove fruit contains 45.22% carbohydrates and is not used as raw material for human food. The research aims to produce ethanol biofuel from mangrove raw materials using multistage distillation. Experimental methods were applied at the stages of mangrove flour production, mangrove flour property testing, saccharification and fermentation, mangrove ethanol distillation, and analysis of potential performance and exhaust emissions. The research produced mangrove biofuel with an alcohol content of 28% which was produced from mangrove flour and had an ash content of 1.91%, protein, 2.24%, fat 0.53%, and water 11.61%. In addition, mangrove biofuel has higher viscosity and density properties than Gasoline at 0.8067Cp and 0.8115 g per mL respectively. The use of mangrove biofuel as a result of experiments is predicted to reduce fuel injection performance.

Abstract

Alternative fuels are a primary solution to address fuel scarcity and the adverse effects of fossil fuels, such as air pollution. Bioethanol is notable for its simple production process and the use of flexible raw materials, although it is often derived from crops used in food production. Mangrove bioethanol, however, is produced from Rhizophora mucronata mangrove fruit, which is abundant, rich in carbohydrates, and not part of the human food chain. This study aimed to evaluate the use of mangrove bioethanol as a biofuel on engine performance and emission reduction in gasoline engines. Laboratory-based experiments were conducted using mangrove bioethanol blends at concentrations of 5% (GE5) and 10% (GE10). Pure gasoline (G100) served as the baseline for comparison. The results showed that GE10 delivered better engine performance and lower emissions than both G100 and GE5, likely due to its high octane rating and oxygen content. Performance improvements with GE10 included increases of 7.89% in brake torque (BT) and brake power (BP), 47.55% in brake thermal efficiency (BTE), and 20.33% in exhaust gas temperature (EGT), along with a 98% reduction in brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC). In terms of emissions, GE10 led to reductions in carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions by 43.56% and 36.54%, respectively, while carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions increased by 59.42%.

Abstract

Community economic activities that encourage motorized vehicles are getting higher. This exacerbates dependence on fossil fuels and air pollution. The outside air that is contaminated with exhaust gases from combustion products is very dangerous for human health. Motorized vehicles such as motorcycles are the largest cause of air pollution. Alcohols have high octane number and low viscosity. The use of ethanol and methanol alcohols is very diverse, so they are easy to obtain. Therefore, alcohol ethanol and methanol are suitable as premium fossil fuel mixtures. This study aims to observe the CO and HC emission characteristics of the gasoline engine using a premium-alcohol mixture of ethanol, methanol. The alcohol concentration was varied from 5% to 15% at 5% intervals. The petrol engine is operated at 2000, 3000, and 4000rpm. Commercial Gas Analyzers are used to measure CO and HC emissions coming out of the exhaust. The results of the observations present the CO and HC emissions of the engine with premium-ethanol fuel, methanol is lower than pure premium (P100). CO emissions from PE15 fuel decreased to 66,30%, and PM15 decreased to 90,63%. Meanwhile, PE15 fuel HC emissions decreased by 58,94%, and PM15 decreased by 68,60%.

Abstract

Ethanol has higher octane and oxygen properties than fossil-fuel gasoline. Along with the increase in gasoline dependency and exhaust emissions, the use of ethanol as a fuel is urgently studied. This study aimed to observe the concentration of 5% ethanol in gasoline on the performance and exhaust emissions of a 150cc gasoline engine that was operated at 1000, 2000, and 3000rpm. The observation results show that the concentration of 5% ethanol in gasoline correlates with an increase in performance with indications of an increase in EGT, Brake power, BTE, and a decrease in SFC. On the emission side, it is also correlated with an increase in the quality of exhaust emissions with indications of increased CO2 emissions and reduced CO and HC emissions. The best correlation of 5% ethanol concentration was obtained at an operating speed of 2000rpm with an increase in EGT of 10.70%, an increase in Brake power of 9.49%, an increase in BTE of 38.62%, an increase in CO2 emissions of 23.06%, a decrease in SFC of 26 .49%, CO emission reduction of 16.67%, and HC emission reduction of 4.24%.

Abstract

Blending fuels is an urgent alternative to reduce dependence on gasoline. Blending gasoline-alcohol bioethanol is realistic due to its high octane number properties and the abundant availability of raw materials. However, high viscosity results in inconsistent fuel mixing homogenization and decreased injector performance. The research aims to design a Dual Port Injection scheme as a dummy simulation of fuel blending so that bioethanol alcohol can be homogeneously blended with gasoline in the combustion chamber. The method used is observation of the Electric Fuel Injection working system and designing a Dual Port Injection Scheme. The research resulted in a Dual Port Injection scheme with the concept of doubling the injection-based fuel system and commands from the commercial Electric Control Unit to be forwarded to the bioethanol and bioethanol fuel pumps to supply fuel to the high pressure pipe.

Abstract

This research focused on the evaluation of raw broiler chicken meat texture and pathogenic antibacterial effect under the treatment of grade 2 coconut-shell liquid smoke (CSLS) as a food preservative. Compound identification of grade 2 CSLS was conducted using the GC-MS method. The main chemical compounds of CSLS were polyunsaturated fatty acid derivates, fatty acid and phenol. The evaluation of texture was conducted on raw broiler chicken meat under the treatment of grade 2 CSLS during storage at 25 ℃ for 7 days. The effect of antibacterial activity of grade 2 CSLS with different concentration (i.e., 5%, 25%, 50%, and 75%) were tested using Gram-positive bacteria on several pathogenic bacteria such as L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, P. Aeruginosa, and E. coli. The results indicated that grade 2 CSLS influenced the inhibited zone of L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, P. Aeruginosa, and E. coli respectively with linear correlation. The optimal concentration of grade 2 CSLS resulted in a concentration of 50%, which was the most optimal against L. monocytogenes, S. aureus, P. Aeruginosa, and E. coli as pathogenic bacteria strains.
