Abstract

Carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) is one of the widely cultivated fishes in Indonesia. Utilization of organic waste from the traditional market such as chicken intestines, corn husk, and water spinach stems into artificial feed for carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) var. Majalaya is discussed in this study. Compared to the commercial feed commonly used by fish farmers in Pontianak, artificial feed with a protein content of 30% showed the best growth rate of body length and weight, and highest feed efficiency. With the proper cultivating condition, artificial feed presents a huge opportunity to be an alternative solution to reduce the cost of carp farm production.

Abstract

AbstractMost rural communities in West Kalimantan were facing negative impact of increasing land conversion activities on their natural food supply. Improper eating behavior and limited health facilities may give more health and death risk to these people. This research described and determined the factors that influenced the eating behavior among three ethnics in West Kalimantan, namely Dayak, Madura and Chinese populations, and the potential impact of land conversion to it.  Survey was conducted in four regencies and one city and random sampling was done in three sub ethnics of Dayak (Muduk, Kanayatn, and Ketungau Sesae’), Madura, and Chinese communities. The eating behavior data was analyzed descriptively included meal frequency and routines, the variety of daily food source, individual estimates of energy expenditure, body mass index (BMI) distribution, and sports habit among 293 participants. Four main factors influenced the eating behavior of rural communities in West Kalimantan including types of occupation, individual involvement in social groups, and the availability and affordability of food source. The land conversion activity will certainly influence the affordable food source availability and the eating behavior for healthy and balanced food among the rural communities in West Kalimantan.

Abstract

Identification of sequence polymorphism on the D-loop region of mtDNA has been done for various purposes, including health and medical treatment. In this research, single nucleotide polymorphisms were identified in the D-loop region of mtDNA of the Sundanese population in western Java. A total of 118 unrelated and healthy Sundanese probands were collected from closed-traditional kampung adat and open communities distributed in 14 cities and regencies in western Java. DNA amplification and direct sequencing of the D-loop region were proceeded using primers L15990 and H409. Multi-alignment was conducted not only intrapopulation but also with D-loop sequence data stored in GenBank for comparison. In this research, we categorized high-frequency SNPs as less effective for identification in population studies because of their presence in other populations outside Indonesia. Meanwhile, lower-frequency SNPs showed typical variants of Sundanese haplotypes. On the other hand, rare or low-frequency SNPs should be re-examined in larger size of samples to have a better understanding of risk factors for many diseases.

Abstract

Betawi identity was assessed based on the diversity of maternal lines using genetic markers in the D-loop region of mitochondrial DNA. The results of the cleavage by the restriction enzymes DdeI, HaeII, HaeIII, and HinfI showed five patterns of genetic variants which were later named Haplotype I, II, III, IV, and V. Haplotype I had the highest frequency of 75.6%, followed by Haplotype III 11.5%, and Haplotype II 10.3%. Haplotypes IV and V were only found in 1 individual each and were assumed to be individual mutations. The highest haplotype in the Betawi population showed the same restriction enzyme cleavage pattern with all comparison samples from the Sunda and Malay populations. Meanwhile, Haplotype II and III were strongly suspected as the result of the divergence of Haplotype I and can also be found in other ethnic groups in Indonesia. This finding confirms Jakarta as a location for ethnic mixing which then produces a new local culture as Betawi Culture.

Abstract

The location close to urban areas and the rapid rate of decline in area can threaten the diversity of rare fruits in the Sibohe Forest. A re-survey in the Sibohe Forest, Singkawang, West Kalimantan was conducted to confirm reports of the existence of 15 rare fruit plant species collected in 2017-2018 by previous researchers. The inventory process started from collection of specimens carried out during June-July 2021, herbarium making, identification and descriptive data analysis. Based on the similarity of regional names, 13 out of 15 species were confirmed according to the previous reports, while 2 species were not found due to the possibility of out of fruiting season. However, 4 of the 13 confirmed species were identified with different scientific names. Additional survey to the people in Pontianak City aged 17-34 years revealed some different names for the same type of fruit among these four species. Four new plant species were also collected and described in this study including amok (Alpinia sp., Zingiberaceae), nubik (Artocarpus sp., Moraceae), tehengan (Artocarpus sp., Moraceae), and smallest arok (Ficus sp., Moraceae). Potentials and challenges in the inventory of rare fruit plants in the Sibohe Forest should be studied regularly as well as efforts to increase public knowledge and interest, especially for the younger generation. Moreover, recommendation should be made to support conservation activities based on the actual data collected in the field regularly.
