Abstract

The moral values and local wisdom contained in folklore can be used as a communication tool to teach educational values, and can also be used as a learning resource in schools. This research aims to determine the feasibility of a flipbook that highlights the diversity of animals in the Ne' Baruakng Kulub folklore in the Animal Group sub-material. The method used is research and development (R&D) according to Borg & Gall. The steps used include 3 of 10 stages, namely research and gathering information through studying literature related to animals found in folklore, followed by planning to formulate learning objectives which will be mediated by flipbook media in accordance with basic competencies, and developing initial forms of product by making a flipbook according to the results of research and gathering information and planning. The flipbook media product was assessed by 5 validators consisting of 2 Biology Education lecturers and 3 Science teachers. Data analysis uses Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI) referring to the Lawshe method. The folk tale "Ne' Baruakng Kulub" is presented in flipbook media in the form of a synopsis and the types of animals contained in the story are used as a means to link it to the learning material. The flipbook media was assessed as appropriate by the five validators on all criteria with CVR and CVI values equal to 1. Thus, the Animal Group Submaterial flipbook media based on the folklore "Ne'Baruakng Kulub" was suitable for use as a learning medium.

Abstract

The significant impact of stunting in early childhood affects both physical growth and cognitive development. The prevalence of stunting in Jungkat Village highlights the importance of monitoring growth and development during mid-childhood (ages 6-12), as it is a critical period for cognitive, social, and physical development. The study aims to provide insights into the effectiveness of interventions in addressing stunting by describing the body size and nutritional status of children aged 6-12 in Jungkat Village. A cross-sectional method was employed in four primary schools in Jongkat District. Anthropometric measurements of body height and body weight were used to calculate nutritional status indices, including the body height-to-age index and body mass index. In Jungkat Village, children aged 6-12 show varied growth patterns, including high rates of stunting and obesity, with some stunted children maintaining normal BMI for age, indicating complex interactions between nutrition and growth. In addition, there is no significant sexual dimorphism in growth patterns at this age, but differences in weight are evident, with boys generally heavier after age 7. Environmental, socioeconomic, and behavioral factors may significantly influence these patterns, underscoring the need for integrated health and nutrition interventions that target maternal and early childhood support.

Abstract

Biology education at the secondary school level adopts a scientific approach that emphasizes critical, analytical, and selective thinking skills. Practicum activities, particularly microscope use, are essential components in developing students’ technical and analytical abilities. However, laboratory utilization at SMA Negeri 1 Kubu has not been optimal. This study aims to describe students’ knowledge of microscopes and their usage as a basis for improving learning strategies and laboratory management. A descriptive qualitative method was employed using a questionnaire covering four main aspects: the name of the microscope, its function, its components, and how to operate it. The results showed that while all students could correctly identify the name of the microscope, their understanding of its function, components, and operation remained limited. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers increase the frequency of practicum sessions, provide more structured guidance, and apply experiential learning approaches. The implications of this study indicate that enhancing students’ understanding of microscope use requires effective laboratory management and the implementation of more active and systematic learning strategies to improve students’ practical competencies and biology learning outcomes. Abstract

The Bun-bun River was located in a mangrove forest area in Kubu Raya Regency and empties into the sea. As the main producers at the trophic level of waters, phytoplankton has an important role in assessing river quality. This study aims to find out phytoplankton community structure including abundance, diversity, uniformity, and dominance indexs in relation to Bun-bun River quality. The observations were made in the dry and rainy seasons at three stations starting from the initial end of the mangrove forest (Station 1), the middle (Station 2), and the final end which also empties into the sea (Station 3). Sampling was carried out at three points (left edge, center, right edge). Measurements of physico-chemical factors include brightness, current velocity, temperature, pH, DO, dissolved CO2, salinity, nitrate and phosphate. Phytoplankton sampling used a 30 µm plankton net mesh size and identification down to the species level. The calculated index values include abundance, diversity, uniformity, and dominance. The Bun-bun River was characterized by brackish waters with calm surface currents (<0.1 m.s-1) and a salinity between 5.4-9.48 ppt. Dissolved CO2 levels are relatively high, namely 22-30.8 mg.L-1 in the dry season and 35.2 mg.L-1 in the rainy season. During the dry season, the pH of the water becomes slightly acidic (6.51-6.76) and relatively neutral during the rainy season (7.08-7.52). Nitrate and phosphate levels were low in both seasons and all three stations. The brightness of the water was higher in the dry season than in the rainy season (20-44 cm). A total of 52 types of phytoplankton were found belonging to four classes, namely Class Bacillariophyceae (25 species), Dinophyceae (14), Chlorophyceae (12), and Chrysophyceae (1). Phytoplankton abundance index was low to moderate. The diversity index was moderate at almost all stations except for the low at Station 3 in the rainy season. The uniformity index at Station 3 was low in the dry season but high in the rainy season, and moderate in other locations. The dominance index was high at Station 3 during the dry season and moderate at other locations. Physico-chemical factors such as salinity, dissolved CO2, nitrate and phosphate levels are most likely to influence abundance, while diversity was influenced by dominance.
