Abstract

Teluk Nibung River in Batu Ampar District, Kubu Raya Regency is a transportation route for Mangrove Production Forests and a traditional fishing area for local communities. The community structure of phytoplankton in the Teluk Nibung River has never been reported. As the main producer in the waters food chain, the structure community of phytoplankton indicates the quality of the fertility of the waters. The community structure of phytoplankton can be identified by measuring the index of abundance, diversity, evenness and dominance. The survey method was used at three stations in dry and rainy seasons. Sample collection is using net plankton (30 µm) and preserved in 4% formalin. The physico-chemical factors measured included temperature, pH, brightness, current velocity, salinity, dissolved oxygen and CO2, phosphate and nitrate. Once identified, phytoplankton calculations are performed to obtain abundance, diversity, evenness, and dominance values. The species number of phytoplankton found was 56 classified into 6 classes, namely Bacillariophyceae (34 species), Dinophyceae (12 species), Chlorophyceae (4 species), Cyanophyceae (3 species), Xantophyceae (1 species), and Euglenophyceae (2 species). The highest abundance of phytoplankton was in the Bacillariophyceae class with a range of 583 Ind./L at Station 2 in the rainy season to 3.922 Ind./L at Station 3 in the dry season. The diversity index at the three stations and both seasons is in the moderate category with a range of 2.31-2.46. The evenness index at the three stations and both seasons is in the high category with a range of 0.67-0.73. Low dominance level was found at the three stations and both seasons with values ranging from 0.14 to 0.19. Overall, the community structure of the phytoplankton in the Teluk Nibung River is in relatively good condition and can support the life of the aquatic biota in it.

Abstract

Production of shark and ray fisheries is still high from various locations in Indonesia. This condition can change the resource stock and its conservation status because it impacts decreasing the number of individuals in the population. Besides the main catch, shark production is also from bycatch, but this data still needs to be widely available. The research aimed to obtain data on the composition and current conservation status of the types of sharks and rays on the mainland of the Kakap River in West Kalimantan from bycatch. The survey method was used in this study by sampling for three months. The guidebook carried out data collection on sharks and rays for the data collection. Identifying samples was carried out directly in the field by collecting, grouping, and measuring the specimens’ body parts, counting the number of individuals, weighing their weight, and determining their sex. The total number of individuals obtained was 1232, consisting of 700 sharks of four species and 532 rays of nine. The species conservation status consists of five vulnerable species; four endangered species; three near threatened species; and one species data deficient. Those species with conservation status still have the risk of extinction in the future.

Abstract

School laboratories are vital for building students' understanding and scientific skills through hands-on activities. However, the laboratory at SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya in Kubu Raya Regency is underutilized, potentially reducing students' motivation and skills. This study aims to evaluate the basic laboratory knowledge and skills of students at SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya, focusing on measurement, weighing, and dilution. This research utilizes a descriptive quantitative survey method to assess the basic laboratory knowledge and skills of Grade XII science students at SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya, with a purposive sample of 35 students. Data analysis was conducted to describe laboratory knowledge and skills as well as their relationship. The study found students’ laboratory knowledge to be generally moderate, with average scores of 41% for measurement, 45% for weighing, and 43% for dilution skills. Practically, 34.3% of students were rated as good and 8.6% as very good in measurement skills. Weighing skills were stronger, with 68.6% in the very good category, while dilution skills need improvement, with only 31.4% very good and 17.1% moderate. A low but significant correlation (r = 0.376, p = 0.026) suggests that theoretical knowledge hasn't fully translated into practical ability. In conclusion, the study highlights a gap between students' theoretical knowledge and practical skills, suggesting a need for increased hands-on practice to enhance scientific proficiency and motivation among students at SMAN 1 Rasau Jaya.
