Abstract

Abstract

The mental health of students in Islamic boarding schools is often neglected due to stigma, low literacy, and misunderstandings linking it to supernatural factors such as possession. This condition makes students reluctant to seek medical help and prefer a purely spiritual approach. This community service program aims to improve mental health literacy by integrating medical approaches and Islamic spirituality, which students and caregivers find more easily acceptable. The activity was carried out at Hidayatullah Al-Muhajirin Bangkalan Islamic Boarding Schools involved 30 students in counseling sessions, 48 students, and 15 caregivers in free health check-ups. The activity methods included an initial survey, interactive counseling, discussions, pre- and post-test questionnaires, and basic health services. Results showed an average increase in students' knowledge scores of 13 points after the counseling, indicating the program's effectiveness in improving mental health awareness. This increased insight also encouraged students to discuss psychological issues without stigma. The material was delivered by integrating Islamic values such as dhikr (remembrance of God), prayer, and meditation (contemplation). The free health check-ups also emphasized the importance of physical and mental balance from an Islamic perspective. This activity has implications for ongoing educational forums, caregiver training in early detection of mental disorders, and the development of medical-spiritual-based counseling services. This program has proven effective as an intervention model that can be replicated in other Islamic boarding schools, while also strengthening community involvement in creating a more caring and supportive environment for students' mental health.

Abstract

The widespread use of gadgets among children, including santri (Islamic boarding school students), contributes significantly to ocular health issues such as eye strain, dry eyes, and escalating myopia rates. Recognizing the limited awareness of excessive screen exposure risks, this community service intervention aimed to improve the knowledge and awareness of 38 Santri Husada (Student Health Cadres) at Assalafi Al-Fithrah Islamic Boarding School in Surabaya by implementing The 20-20-20 Rule. The methodology employed an interactive educational approach divided into three phases: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The core procedure involved pre-test administration, interactive health sessions, practical simulation of the 20-20-20 Rule, educational leaflet distribution, and a post-test. Data were analyzed using the N-Gain score to measure effectiveness. Results demonstrated a significant knowledge improvement, with the average score increasing from 5.8 (pre-test) to 8.8 (post-test). N-Gain analysis indicated that 71.05% of participants achieved a high-improvement category, confirming the effectiveness of the interactive educational method. This activity successfully enhanced the santri's health understanding and is deemed a potential sustainable health education model for boarding schools, although long-term monitoring is recommended.

Abstract

In recent years, a worrying shift has occurred from conventional cigarettes to electronic cigarettes (vapes), which are often perceived as safer. However, evidence indicates that vape liquids contain nicotine, formaldehyde, and toxic chemicals capable of causing addiction, neurodevelopmental harm, and lung injury in adolescents. This community service project aimed to increase students' awareness regarding the dangers of conventional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes (vapes) through an integrated medical and Islamic-based educational approach. The program was conducted at SMK PGRI 13 Surabaya and included interactive lectures, video presentations, group discussions, leaflet distribution, personal reflection, selection of youth anti-smoking ambassadors, and basic health screening. Knowledge evaluation was conducted using pre and posttests. The results showed an increase in students' knowledge scores from 77 to 87 (a 12% improvement). Nutritional status assessment among 76 students showed 36.8% were in the normal BMI category, 26.3% underweight, 11.8% overweight, and 25% obese. Several active smokers expressed commitment to quitting smoking, and student anti-smoking ambassadors were appointed to promote a smoke-free environment. This program demonstrates that integrating health education with Islamic values effectively enhances adolescents’ awareness and motivation to avoid smoking and vaping. The sustainability of the initiative is supported by school involvement and the empowerment of peer ambassadors.
