Abstract

Cocoa pod borer (CPB) is one of the important pests of cacao crops in Indonesia. The percentage of plants attacked by CPB pests at Dharmasraya Regency in 2019 reached 59.93%. Therefore, it is necessary to have appropriate control measures in order to reduce the percentage of plants attacked by CPB pests. One of the controls that are considered capable to controlling CPB pests is the condomization method. The objectives of this research wereto study the effectiveness of cacao pods condomization against C. cramerella attack, and to determine the appropriate cacao pods size for condomization in controlling C. cramerella. The researchwas designed by a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisted of 3 treatments and 5 replications, each replication consisted of 2 samples. The treatments used were condomization of cacao pods sized 5-8 cm and 9-12 cm with plastic sized30 cm x 20 cm x 0.5 mm, and the controls. The data were analyzed ofvariance and Duncan's New Multiple Range Test (DNMRT) at 5% level significantly. The results showed that the cacao pods sized5-8 cm that were condomed could reduce the percentage of pod attacked by CPB pests from 89.96% to 40.00% and the percentage of cocoa beans damage from 35.45% to 2.46%. The average of cocoa beans dry weight   in this results showed a not too significant difference, ranging from 31.6 g - 47.7 g. Abstract

Setothosea asigna poses a significant threat to oil palm plantations, necessitating effective control measures. This survey-based research, utilizing Purposive Sampling, identifies parasitoids and evaluates their effectiveness in Dharmasraya oil palm plantations, a crucial palm oil-producing region in Indonesia. The selected criteria encompass plantations aged 6-15 years with a considerable Setothosea asigna infestation, providing a comprehensive overview of the pest's impact. The study establishes five sample points diagonally, each comprising five randomly chosen plants, totaling 25 samples per site, ensuring diverse representation. The predominant larval parasitoids exhibit noteworthy efficacy, primarily from the Hymenoptera order, Braconidae family, Genus Apanteles, and Spinaria. Among the 110 larvae observed, five were parasitized, resulting in the emergence of 65 parasitoids. The parasitization rate varies from 0 - 9.09%, with prominent contributions from Apanteles sp. and Spinaria sp., belonging to the endoparasitoid type. This research significantly contributes to sustainable agriculture practices and the palm oil industry, offering insights into targeted pest control for Setothosea asigna. Despite its focus on Dharmasraya, the study provides a valuable foundation for broader applications and invites further research for generalization.

Abstract

Rice is a primary necessity for the Indonesian people, as it serves as a source of energy and carbohydrates. Rice cultivation requires strategic approaches to increase production, aiming to prevent threats to Indonesia's food security. One strategy that can be applied is the jajar legowo rice planting system. The jajar legowo system is a technique that manipulates planting distances to increase rice yields, resulting in a greater number of edge plants. This activity aims to enhance farmers' understanding of rice cultivation using the jajar legowo system to achieve better harvests and to boost their enthusiasm in working on their agricultural land. The activity was conducted on the rice fields owned by the Tanjung Raya farming group, located in Nagari Sungai Dareh, Pulau Punjung District, Dharmasraya Regency. The method employed involved directly practising the jajar legowo rice planting system in the farmers' rice fields. The activity proceeded smoothly, successfully increasing the farmers' understanding of *jajar legowo* rice cultivation to achieve better harvests. Both the farmers and students involved in the activity were able to perform their tasks according to the specified guidance. Looking forward, it is hoped that similar activities will be held, as this initiative by the students of Campus III Universitas Andalas Dharmasraya aims to provide benefits and positive contributions to the surrounding community.

Abstract

Identification of fruit flies and the methods of their control are essential to overcome the problem of pests. Using attractants is one of the control methods, which is environmental friendly and leaves no residue on plants. The study aimed to identify the species of fruit flies attacking Siam citrus plants and determine the most effective type of attractants to control their population. Identification was made on the fruit flies captured on attractants, and the study on attractants was conducted using a Randomized Block Design (RBD) consisting of four treatments and five replications. Four treatments (type of attractants) were petrogenol, rongit glue, chery glue, and king super glue. Two species of fruit flies, i.e., Bactrocera dorsalis and B. umbrosa, were found in the citrus plantation in Lambung Bukik Padang. The most effective attractants to control the fruit fly population were rongit glue and super king glue, which trapped the highest number of flies. Rongit glue trapped on the average of 94.2 individuals, and King superglue at 91.0 individuals per week. Rongit glue and super king glue can reduce fruit fly attacks. It is also part of an integrated pest management system to support sustainable agriculture.
