Abstract

West Sumatra Province is one of the cocoa production centers in Indonesia. Cocoa farmers in the Lima Puluh Kota District in West Sumatera Province had successfully developed a superior clone of cocoa plants resulting from participatory selection, which was later coded BL-50. The main pests that attack cocoa plants are the urgent problem in cocoa cultivation, resulting in decreased productivity. This study aims to determine the level of significant pest attacks on cocoa varieties BL-50 in Tanah Datar Regency. This research is in the form of a survey with a purposive sampling method. Sampling is carried out systematically diagonally in the field. The highest attack rate of Cocoa Fruit Borer in Tanah Datar Regency is in Rambatan District, with the percentage of affected plants, the percentage of infested fruits, and the highest attack intensity, respectively 51,.25%; 31.58% and 21.10%, the lowest were in Lintau Buo Utara District with 30.93%; 20.70% and 13.96%. The highest attack rate of cocoa fruit-sucking ladybugs in the BL-50 variety is in Rambatan District, 66.09%, 45.07%, and 30.45%. At the same time, the lowest is in the Lintau Buo Utara District, with a percentage value of 41.56%, 27.66%, and 18.30%. Excellent and regular land sanitation activities have played a role in minimizing the level of pest attacks in Lintau Buo Utara.

Abstract

Termites are one of the organisms that have the potential to reduce oil palm productivity, so it is necessary to identify the species and map their distribution to support more effective and sustainable management. This study was conducted to identify termite species and map their distribution in oil palm plantations in Timpeh District, Dharmasraya Regency, Indonesia. This study used a survey method with purposive sampling based on several criteria, including the presence of plant attack symptoms, air humidity ≥ 60%, the presence of rotten wood, the presence of termite nests, and the sampling location was selected in oil palm plantation areas located on the edge of local roads at a distance of about 0-15 meters. The termite samples obtained were identified morphologically using a microscope and identification keys. Termite distribution mapping was performed using ArcGIS 10.8 software, while the relationship between termite presence and environmental factors (temperature, light intensity, and humidity) was analyzed using Redundancy Analysis (RDA). The results showed that there were six termite species in Timpeh Subdistrict, namely Macrotermes gilvus, Coptotermes curvignathus, Pericapritermes mohri, Dicuspiditermes nemorosus, Nasutitermes longinasus, and Termes propinquus. The species M. gilvus has the widest distribution throughout the subdistrict and is not significantly influenced by environmental factors, but rather by its high adaptability. Meanwhile, the other species have a more limited distribution and tend to be influenced by factors such as humidity, light intensity, and the availability of organic material. The mapping results provide a crucial basis for determining priority areas for control and termite management strategies in oil palm plantations, enabling more effective and efficient approaches to be implemented.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to enhance the capacity of beekeepers in colony management and methods for propagating galo-galo bee colonies within the Bangun Sejahtera Indonesia (BSI) honey bee cultivation group. The background to this activity is the high rate of extinction of partner galo-galo colonies. The high rate of colony collapse has a significant impact on the economy of beekeepers, a decline in their honey production, as well as ecological consequences in the surrounding area, including a decline in pollinators. The activity was carried out through training, which began with an information session on factors that support colony survival, such as sufficient plant vegetation, anticipation of predator attacks, and optimal colony maintenance management. The main achievement of this activity was that approximately 60% of the ten trap boxes installed during training were successfully colonized by new galo-galo colonies within four weeks. This result demonstrates that the training improved beekeepers’ knowledge and skills in caring for colonies and installing trap boxes, which directly increased the number of colonies owned by beekeepers. Additionally, the success of colony acquisition through trap boxes can reduce the felling of trees where galo-galo nest in the wild, one tree for one colony.

Abstract

Bagworm (Metisa plana Walker) is a major defoliating pest of oil palm, causing significant yield losses during outbreaks. Biological control using predatory insects offers an environmentally sustainable alternative to chemical insecticides. This study evaluated the predatory performance of Sycanus sp. against M. plana larvae and assessed the effect of predator density on prey suppression under laboratory conditions. A completely randomized design was used with five predator-density treatments (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 predators per 10 larvae) and ten replications. Predator performance was evaluated based on prey-search duration, handling time, larval mortality, and prey consumption. The initial prey-search duration ranged from 2.11 to 2.25 min, while subsequent searches ranged from 1.69 to 2.04 min. Prey-handling time remained relatively constant across treatments (58.1–59.1 min). Predation by Sycanus sp. substantially reduced M. plana populations within three days, with the highest mortality occurring on the first day after predator introduction. Predator density significantly increased prey consumption, which rose from 1.26 ± 0.21 larvae at one predator to 4.43 ± 0.19 larvae at five predators. A strong positive relationship was observed between predator density and prey consumption (y = 0.795x + 0.451; R² = 0.9531). Although the highest prey suppression occurred at the greatest predator density, a ratio of two Sycanus sp. adults per ten M. plana larvae provided a favorable balance between prey suppression and predator deployment efficiency. These findings support the potential use of Sycanus sp. as a biological control agent in sustainable oil palm integrated pest management programs.

Abstract

Sugar palm (Arenga pinnata Merr.) agroecosystems provide important ecological functions in tropical agricultural landscapes, particularly as habitats for pollinator insects and other arthropod communities. However, information regarding insect diversity and the influence of environmental factors on pollinator activity in sugar palm agroecosystems remains limited in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate insect diversity and community structure, and to examine the relationships between abiotic factors and insect abundance in sugar palm agroecosystems in Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. Field observations were conducted in Lintau Buo and Sungayang Districts in 2025. Insects associated with sugar palm inflorescences were sampled during morning and afternoon observation periods using direct observation and sweep net methods. Community structure was analyzed using diversity, evenness, richness, and dominance indices. At the same time, the effects of abiotic variables on pollinator abundance were assessed using Negative Binomial Generalized Linear Models (GLM) and Spearman rank correlation analysis. A total of 2,297 insect individuals were recorded, consisting of 1,858 pollinator insects and 439 visitor insects belonging to 13 genera. Pollinator communities were dominated by Apis spp., Vespa sp., Polyrhachis spp., Episyrphus sp., and Tetragonula spp. Diversity analysis indicated moderate insect diversity, with high evenness and low dominance, suggesting relatively stable ecological conditions within the agroecosystem. Negative Binomial GLM revealed that rainfall significantly reduced pollinator abundance (Estimate = −0.084 ± 0.021 SE, p < 0.001), while relative humidity also negatively affected pollinator activity (p = 0.006). Spearman correlation analysis confirmed a strong negative relationship between rainfall and pollinator abundance (rs = −0.82, p < 0.01). These findings demonstrate that sugar palm agroecosystems support diverse insect communities and highlight the importance of environmental conditions in regulating pollinator activity within tropical agroforestry systems.

Abstract

Soil insects play an important role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem in plantation areas, both as decomposers of organic matter and as biological control agents. Their presence can be an indicator of soil health and the stability of the agricultural environment. On the other hand, soil insects can be detrimental, namely as pests on plants. This study was conducted with the aim of inventorying the types of soil insects found in coffee plantations (Coffea sp.) Solok Radjo Cooperative, Solok Regency. Sampling was carried out from July to September 2025 using the pitfall trap method with a diagonal transect pattern of 100 meters. Identification of soil insects was carried out at the Integrated Pest Management Laboratory, Andalas University, Dharmasraya Campus. Identification based on morphological characteristics of soil insects with the help of a microscope and insect identification keys. The results based on research conducted in the Solok Radjo coffee plantation, Solok Regency, identified consist of 5 orders of soil insects, namely Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Blattodea, Dermaptera, and Orthoptera. Also found 8 families of soil insects including Scarabaeidae, Carabidae, Formicidae, Ectobiidae, Blattidae, Anisolabididae, Gryllidae, and Gryllotalpidae. From the results of the study, there were 8 genera found, namely Onthophagus, Pheropsophus, Odontomachus, Blattella, Eurycotis, Euborellia, Lepidogryllus, and Gryllotalpa. Insects that act as predators are Pheropsophus, Odontomachus, and Euborellia, insects that act as decomposers are Onthopghagus and Eurycotis. Insects that act as pests are Blattella and Gryllotalpa, and Lepidogryllus.
