Abstract

It is appear that there is the limited understanding of how sustainable agricultural practices can be effectively linked to the production of quality foods that meet evolving market and consumer demands, as existing studies tend to address sustainability and food quality in isolation.  This paper highlights the importance practicing sustainable agriculture and meeting demand of quality foods for the good of whole society. This study applied a secondary data collection method to identify pathways for meeting the demand for quality foods through the practice of sustainable agriculture, using a qualitative descriptive analysis supported by thematic synthesis of policy documents, scientific literature, and sectoral reports.  The study found that Sustainable practices enhance soil fertility and structure, reduce chemical residues, and promote balanced nutrient cycling, which collectively improve the nutritional value and safety of food products. In addition, environmentally sound farming systems strengthen resilience to climate variability and reduce production risks, thereby supporting consistent food supply. From a socio-economic perspective, sustainable agriculture can increase farmers’ incomes through efficiency gains, reduced input costs, and access to premium markets for quality foods. The study highlighted that adopting sustainable agriculture is not only essential for environmental protection but also critical for ensuring the availability of high-quality foods that meet consumer expectations and support food security. Policy support, farmer capacity building, and market incentives are identified as key factors in accelerating the transition toward sustainable food systems. This study contributes by integrating sustainable agriculture practices with quality food demand through a systematic synthesis of secondary evidence, providing conceptual and policy-relevant insights to support the development of sustainable, quality-oriented food systems.

Abstract

Labangka District in Sumbawa Regency is a central area for hybrid maize production in West Nusa Tenggara Province; however, dryland hybrid maize farming in this region currently faces several challenges. This study aims to: (1) identify the internal and external factors affecting hybrid maize farming, and (2) formulate a development strategy for dryland hybrid maize farming in Labangka, Sumbawa Regency. A descriptive research method was employed, and data were collected through a survey utilizing interviews with 30 respondents selected via purposive sampling, consisting of 15 respondents from Suka Mulia Village and 15 from Suka Damai Village. The collected data were analyzed using SWOT analysis. The results indicate that the primary strategy for developing dryland hybrid maize farming in Labangka, Sumbawa Regency, is the WO (Weakness–Opportunities) strategy, which minimizes existing weaknesses to capture marketing opportunities. This strategy includes: (1) adopting digital technology and weather information systems to overcome information limitations and rainfall dependence, (2) participating in government-supported technical training for cultivation and integrated pest management, and (3) utilizing the People's Business Credit (KUR) scheme or government capital assistance to strengthen farmers' financial capacity.

Abstract

The watershed (DAS) in West Lombok Regency has experienced environmental degradation due to land-use conversion and unsustainable agricultural practices in upstream areas, resulting in increased critical land, erosion, and declining hydrological functions. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of watershed rehabilitation programs, assess their impacts on vegetation recovery, identify factors influencing program success, and formulate sustainable management strategies. A mixed-methods approach was employed. Quantitative analysis utilized Geographic Information System (GIS)-based remote sensing, applying the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to assess vegetation cover and the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) to estimate erosion levels. Qualitative data were collected through field observations and semi-structured interviews to evaluate community participation, institutional support, and implementation constraints. The results showed that watershed rehabilitation improved environmental conditions, as indicated by increased vegetation density, expanded canopy cover, and reduced critical land areas. The use of multipurpose tree species (MPTS), including mahogany, sengon, durian, and candlenut, was well adapted to local conditions and provided additional economic benefits through agroforestry practices. Plant survival rates were generally moderate to high. However, program effectiveness was constrained by limited maintenance funding, seasonal water shortages, livestock disturbances, and weak monitoring systems. Strong community participation and local institutional support were associated with better rehabilitation outcomes. This study concludes that integrating vegetative and mechanical conservation measures with community-based economic empowerment is essential for enhancing watershed rehabilitation effectiveness and sustaining hydrological ecosystem functions in West Lombok Regency.
