Abstract

Lime or Citrus aurintifolia (CA) is a type of medicinal plant that has long been used by local communities in Indonesia. Besides being used as traditional medicine, the fruit is also used for a variety of food or drinks. The use of plants as traditional medicine is related to the bioactivity and content of secondary metabolites. This study aims to explain the relationship between the use of CA as traditional medicine and its bioactivity. The method used is a literature review published online on Google Scholar and also scientific journals about CA using CA keywords, CA uses, and CA biaoctivities, then synthesized so as to obtain comprehensive information. In ethnobotany CA is used to treat fever, sauna ingredients, cough medicines, to increase stamina, overcome hypertension, and anti-cholesterol. Various researchers have successfully demonstrated the bioactivity of CAs which are anticholesterol, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antihypertension, antiosteoporosis and anticancer. Essential oils found in the leaves and fruit are compounds responsible for their bioactivity. The ability of CA as an antimicrobial can be very potential to be developed for health as well as a natural food preservative.

Abstract

Digitalis purpurea (Schrophulariaceae) is used by the local Indonesian community as an ornamental plant, even though this plant has high toxicity and has the potential to treat heart problems. This study aims to explain the botany, bioactivity and toxicity of D. purpurea based on literature studies. Literature was obtained online, especially Google scholar using the keywords Digitalis purpurea, bioactivity D. purpurea, and glycoside heart. In Europe, D. purpurea is very popular to treat congestive heart failure and has been used since 200 years ago, but it is very toxic to humans. Digitalis poisoning causes anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, yellow or jaundice vision, appearance of blurred lines, decreased heart rate, and weight loss. D. purpurea's bioactivity includes overcoming heart failure, antioxidants, anti-cancer/tumor. Cardiac glycosides present in D. purpurea include cardenolides, digitoxin, gitoxin, purpureaside A, purpureaside B, acteoside and purpureaside C, which are related to their bioactivity. The toxicity and inotropic effects of cardiac glycosides result directly from inhibition of membrane-bound Na+K+_ATPase, an enzyme involved in the transport of Na+K+ across cell membranes. The use of D. purpurea needs strict control so that side effects can be minimized.

Abstract

Sauropus androgynus (SA) have been used as a vegetable and medicine especially by local communities in Southeast Asia. In 1994 – 1995 reported the occurrence of lung disorders due to consuming juice made from leaves and young shoots which mostly resulted in death. The local comunities in Indonesian, SA uses a vegetables to increase the production of breast milk, therefore a confrehensive study of the use and toxicity of SA is needed. This study is based on literature studies of scientific articles or books published online or offline. The data obtained from the article is then synthesized so that information is obtained that is comprehensive about SA. Ethnobotany study of SA used as a source of vitamins, increases milk production, anti-obesity, and its processing is adjusted to the intended use. The using of SA through of fresh (without cooking) results in bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) which results in damage to the brochioles caused by papaverine compounds. Papaverine is a compound that is damaged by heating, because the use in the form of boiled vegetables is relatively safe. SA has bioactivity as an antimicrobial, antidiabetic mellitus, anti-cholesterol, anti-oxidant, anti-anemia, and increases hormones. The use of SA by means of preheating is relatively safe, but to prevent toxicity it needs to be limited to the amount of consumption and consumption over a long period of time.

Abstract

Traditional food is local wisdom passed down from generation to generation, including ayam garang asem (a type of chicken curry with a very prominent sour taste). The aim of this research is the diversity of plants used to make garang asem and the process of making it. The research method uses an ethnobotanical approach through surveys and semi-structured interviews. Data was analyzed qualitatively. Ayam garang asem is one of the traditional Javanese ethnic foods in Gumuro village with the main flavors being spicy (garang) and tamarind (asem). The taste of tamarind chicken comes from the plants used, namely spicy (chili) and tamarind (starfruit). It was found that 11 species (12 local name) belonging 8 families and 10 genera of plants were used as ingredients to prepare tamarind chicken. Plants are dominated by the Solanaceae family (4 species), followed by Liliaceae (2 species), the rest are one species for each family. The use of starfruit and bay leaves has great potential to be developed as cooking spices because they have antimicrobial bioactivity so they have great potential to be developed as natural food preservatives.

Abstract

Legundi, or Vitex trifolia (Verbenaceae), is an indigenous Indonesian plant that has been long used as traditional medicine. This study aims to explain the botany, secondary metabolites, benefits, and bioactivity of V. trifolia. The method used in this research is a literature review obtained online in 1996–2022, especially from Google Scholar, using the keywords V. trifolia, uses of V. trifolia, and bioactivity of V. trifolia. Description V. trifolia is a shrub or small tree; leaves are spread out with 1–5 leaves; compound flowers have a purple crown. The bioactivities of V. trifolia include anticancer, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antidiabetes mellitus, and hepatoprotective. The V. trifolia bioactivity as an anticancer is more prominent than the others. Some bioactive compounds against V. trifolia cancer are vitexicarpin, casticin, vitepyrroloids, rotundifuran, persicogenin, artemetin, luteolin, penduletin, vitexicarpin, chrysosplenol, vitexilactone, vitetrifolin, viterotulin, and vitexilactone. The compounds artemetin, casticin, and vitexilactone are associated with anticancer and antiinflammatory activity. Further study of anticancer compounds needs to be carried out so that the development of V. trifolia into a standardized herbal medicine, especially anticancer, can be developed.
