Abstract

Effective communication plays a central role in determining service quality within the hospitality industry, particularly in restaurant settings where waiter–guest interaction directly shapes customer experience. This study investigates common communication errors produced by waiter students in a hospitality education program, focusing on three major dimensions: grammatical accuracy, pragmatic appropriateness, and lexical precision. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected through observation and transcription of simulated restaurant service interactions involving undergraduate hospitality students. The collected utterances were analyzed to identify recurring patterns of linguistic and pragmatic deviation. The findings reveal that grammatical errors primarily involve auxiliary omission, incorrect tense usage, and improper interrogative formation, largely influenced by first language transfer. Pragmatic errors include overly direct imperatives, insufficient mitigation strategies, and limited empathetic responses in complaint situations, indicating underdeveloped sociopragmatic competence. Lexical errors are characterized by overgeneralization, collocational inaccuracies, and limited use of hospitality-specific terminology, which affect professional credibility and persuasive effectiveness in menu explanation. The study argues that communication challenges in hospitality contexts are multidimensional and extend beyond structural inaccuracies. In restaurant service encounters, language functions not only as a medium of information exchange but also as a representation of professionalism and institutional quality. Therefore, hospitality English instruction should adopt an integrated communicative competence framework that simultaneously addresses grammatical form, pragmatic sensitivity, and lexical specialization. The findings provide pedagogical insights for vocational institutions seeking to align English language training with the communicative demands of international restaurant environments.

Abstract

Abstract

For the sake of tourism recovery during the post-pandemic period, a storynomic promotion strategy is currently being developed by Indonesian government, and is considered effective in triggering the curiosity and visiting interest of tourists. This study aims to identify the role of storynomics as a moderating variable in strengthening motivation and interest to visit the Tebing Tegallinggah Temple site in Bedulu village, Gianyar, Bali. First, storytelling stories were collected through field research by interviewing selected informants, as well as randomly distributing questionnaires. Second, historical data and documentation were classified and analyzed qualitatively, while respondents' answers were assessed using Smart PLS. Third, the results of data analysis are presented through narrative descriptions supported by tables and figures for visualization. The results showed that motivation and storynomic had a less significant effect on the visiting interest of the respondents, most of whom were young. This research is expected to speed up the tourism recovery as well as to contribute to the sustainability of archaeological heritage as special interest tourist destination in Gianyar regency in particular and Indonesia in general.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the language varieties of Balian and the factors that influence these language varieties. This research is descriptive qualitative with a linguistic and pragmatic theory approach used by Balian. Data collection was done by in-depth interviews with Balians in the hotel. The collected data were then transcribed and thematically coded to identify patterns in language use, such as the use of language, the use of metaphorical language styles, and the sentence structure used. The results found that the balian language variety when communicating with clients is the use of affirmative language, the use of spiritual metaphor style, and the use of imperative sentence structure to direct the client's experience and emotional response during the healing process. Meanwhile, the factors that influence balian language varieties are cultural, spiritual, social, economic, and personal factors. An understanding of these factors helps explain how balians navigate between local traditions and the needs of their clients, as well as how they integrate different elements of language to create effective and meaningful healing experiences. Future studies go more in-depth into analyzing balian language use when viewed pragmatically and therapeutically.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the forms and patterns of interlanguage among hospitality vocational students in English job interview practices. The study is motivated by the importance of professional communication skills in the international hospitality sector, particularly during global job interviews that require linguistic and pragmatic competence simultaneously. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, supported by frequency counts of identified errors. Data were collected through job interview simulations, performance observations, interview transcripts, and documentation. The analysis focused on four categories of linguistic errors: morphological, syntactic, lexical, and pragmatic errors. The findings showed that syntactic errors were the most frequent, followed by morphological, lexical, and pragmatic errors. The identified problems included inconsistent tense use, inaccurate sentence structures, inappropriate vocabulary choices in hospitality contexts, and expressions that did not adequately reflect professional international communication. The findings also indicated that communication anxiety and limited exposure to authentic simulation-based learning affected students’ performance during job interviews. This study contributes to Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research by extending interlanguage analysis to professional hospitality communication. Practically, the findings provide a conceptual basis for developing an English Job Interview training model based on error analysis to strengthen the employability and professional communication skills of hospitality vocational students.

Abstract

Phrasal verbs are essential to good procedural communication in ECP Phrasal verbs produced by culinary students while composing real recipes, however, have had limited investigation despite their relevance. This research investigates students' use of phrasal verbs and writing errors in culinary writings. The qualitative method, based on its study design driven by data analysis, examines 120 recipe texts in English written by students at Institut Pariwisata dan Bisnis Internasional Culinary Arts and supplemented with semi-structured interviews. The results identified 342 possible phrasal verbs distributed among six functional types. Food preparation was the most frequently used category (31.6%), followed by mixing and combining (24.0%), cooking & processing (17.8%), kitchen management (13.2%), serving & presentation (8.2%) and finally consumption (5.2%). We did an error analysis which showed 114 misuses of the phrasal verbs. The most frequent error category was particle misuse (36.0%); followed by lexical avoidance errors (28.1%), structural mistakes (24.6%) and register-related ones (11.3%). The results indicate that while students possess a functional knowledge of cooking phrasal verbs, their creative use is constrained by limited lexical variation and only partial mastery of the verb constructions This research also contributes to English for Specific Purposes (ESP) by presenting corpus-informed data on the linguistic phenomenon of phrasal verb use in culinary communication and proposing a functional framework for the analysis of culinary phrasal verbs. The findings suggest the necessity of designing corpus-driven teaching materials and a culinary-specific phrasal verb register to expand both students' linguistic repertoires and occupational communication proficiencies within ECP contexts.
