Abstract

Coffee leaves (Coffea arabica L.) are a part of the coffee plant that is not widely used. Coffee leaves contain flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, caffeine and polyphenols. Coffee leaves are a natural ingredient that has antibacterial and antioxidant activity, so they need to be used. develop it into pharmaceutical preparations to increase ease of use, one of which is liquid soap preparations The aim of this research was to determine the secondary metabolite content of simplicia powder and ethanol extract of coffee leaves, formulate ethanol extract of coffee leaves into liquid soap, determine the physical quality of the preparation and test the activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The method used in this research is to make a liquid soap formulation from Arabica coffee leaves and test its effectiveness as an antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This research was carried out experimentally with the independent variable being the concentration of Arabica coffee leaf ethanol extract: F1 contains 2.5 grams of active substance, F2 contains 5.0 grams of active substance, F3 contains 7.5 grams of active substance, dependent variable: leaf simplicia phytochemical screening test Arabica coffee, antibacterial activity test against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Quality of liquid soap preparations from ethanol extract of Arabica coffee leaves using stability tests (pH of the preparation, homogeneity, viscosity and height of foam) and antibacterial tests using the agar diffusion method (well method). The research results show that simplicia powder and ethanol extract of coffee leaves contain alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin and saponin chemical compounds. The organoleptic test results of liquid soap have a distinctive smell, a combination of coffee and rose leaves, are blackish brown in color, and are in the form of a thick liquid. The stability test results of all formulas are stable. The pH test ranges from 9.05 to 9.43. Test foam height 35- 40 mm. The viscosity test results ranged from 735.0-894.8 cpoise, antibacterial activity had an k- (Blanko) concentration inhibition zone of  13,6 mm FI concentration liquid soap obtained a result of 15.7 mm, FII concentration liquid soap obtained a result of 18.4 mm, FIII concentration liquid soap obtained a result of 18.75 mm compared to the control positive obtained a result of 18.8 mm.

Abstract

Background: Infectious diseases caused by bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus have become a global health issue. Matoa leaves (Pometia pinnata) are known to contain antibacterial compounds that hold potential as alternative treatments. Objective: This study aimed to produce nanoparticles from the ethanol extract of matoa leaves and compare the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) values of both the extract and its nanoparticles against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: This experimental research used different concentrations of matoa leaf ethanol extract (6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50%) and nanoparticle extract (0.625%, 1.25%, 2.5%, 5%). Nanoparticle characterization was performed using a Particle Size Analyzer (PSA). Results: The nanoparticle characterization showed a size of 528.95 nm. The MIC value of the matoa leaf extract against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was 12.5%, while for the nanoparticles, it was 1.25%. The MBC value of the matoa leaf extract was 50%, and for the nanoparticles, it was 5%. The highest antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract was 18.3 mm and 18.4 mm, while for the nanoparticles, it was 18.5 mm and 19.0 mm. Conclusion: The nanoparticle extract of matoa leaves was more effective in inhibiting and killing bacteria compared to the regular extract, with a lower dose (1:10), showing its potential as an efficient antibacterial alternative.

Abstract

Penggunaan probiotik telah menjadi alternatif penting dalam praktik peternakan untuk mengatasi resistensi antibiotik dan meningkatkan kesehatan ternak. Program pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan masyarakat, khususnya peternak di Desa Binjai Bakung, Kecamatan Pantai Labu, Kabupaten Deli Serdang, dalam memahami serta membuat probiotik alami untuk ternak. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi ceramah, diskusi, dan praktik langsung pembuatan probiotik. Hasil Pre Test menunjukkan pemahaman dan keterampilan awal peserta yang bervariasi, dengan hanya 50% memahami probiotik, 75% mengetahui contoh probiotik (umumnya untuk manusia), dan 30% mampu membuat probiotik alami. Setelah program, evaluasi melalui Post Test menunjukkan peningkatan luar biasa dengan tingkat keberhasilan 100% pada seluruh indikator: 20 dari 20 peserta memahami pengertian dan manfaat probiotik, 20 dari 20 peserta mampu menyebutkan contoh produk probiotik, dan 20 dari 20 peserta mampu membuat probiotik alami untuk ternak. Keberhasilan 100% ini membuktikan efektivitas metode dan materi yang disampaikan. Program ini tidak hanya meningkatkan kapasitas individu peserta tetapi juga berpotensi memberikan dampak positif pada pemberdayaan ekonomi lokal dan praktik peternakan yang berkelanjutan dengan mengurangi ketergantungan pada pakan komersial dan antibiotik. Untuk memastikan keberlanjutan dan dampak jangka panjang, direkomendasikan adanya pendampingan pasca-pelatihan, pembentukan kelompok peternak, evaluasi dampak komprehensif, serta menjalin kemitraan untuk pengembangan program lebih lanjut.

Abstract

In an effort to improve public health by reducing the use of hazardous food additives in the city of Medan, community service has been carried out at the Perwiritan Batak Islam (PWBI) in Kwala Bekala, Medan Johor, Medan city on December 19-20, 2024. The training focused on learning how to test for formalin and borax in food using the natural color reaction of turmeric and KMnO4 (blue medicine) with 18 participants. This activity contributed to enhancing the technical skills of testing for formalin and borax to prevent and reduce the risk of using hazardous food additives. After this training, participants' knowledge about natural color tests on food containing formalin and borax improved. Pre-test and post-test evaluations of 20 participants showed a significant improvement in their understanding, with evaluation graphs indicating a shift from a low level of knowledge to a better level of knowledge.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is a common oral health problem caused by Streptococcus mutans. Antiseptic mouthwash containing natural ingredients like senduduk leaves (Melastoma malabathricum L.) shows potential as an alternative, as it contains antimicrobial compounds (alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins). Objective: To determine the antibacterial activity of senduduk leaf ethanol extract mouthwash against S. mutans and evaluate its physical characteristics. Methods: This experimental study included: (1) ethanol extraction of senduduk leaves using 96% ethanol maceration, (2) simplicia characterization and phytochemical screening, (3) formulation of three mouthwash concentrations (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%), (4) preparation evaluation (organoleptic properties, pH, viscosity), and (5) antibacterial activity testing using the well diffusion method. Results: The mouthwash preparation met physical criteria as a light-to-dark brown liquid with pH 6.33-6.43 and viscosity of 4.833-5.726 cps. Antibacterial tests showed dose-dependent effects, with the highest inhibition zone in the 7.5% formula (18.53 mm; strong category). Conclusion: Senduduk leaf extract shows potential as an antibacterial active ingredient in herbal mouthwash against S. mutans in vitro, though further testing (in vivo/clinical trials) is needed to validate therapeutic claims.

Abstract

Penyakit menular merupakan masalah kesehatan yang sering disebabkan oleh berbagai spesies bakteri. Escherichia coli mewakili patogen umum. Enzim metabolisme yang terdapat pada daun terong hijau (Solanum melongena) memiliki sifat antibakteri. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengevaluasi intensitas aktivitas bakteri dan kebocoran DNA dan protein bakteri. Penelitian ini bersifat eksperimental, dengan dilakukan uji karakterisasi simplisia dan daun terong hijau di ekstraksi dengan metode maserasi. Analisis kimia terhadap serbuk dan ekstrak dilakukan, kemudian diuji aktivitas antibakterinya dengan cara difusi pada kertas pada suhu 37oC selama 24 jam. Kebocoran DNA dan protein bakteri diverifikasi dengan spektrofotometri UV-visibel. Daun terong hijau mengandung alkaloid, flavonoid, glikosida, tanin, saponin dan steroid, menurut hasil percobaan. Berdasarkan konsentrasi 2,5, 5, 7,5 dan 10%, hasil uji aktivitas antibakteri daya hambat ekstrak daun terong hijau adalah 6,7, 7,7, 8,1 dan 9,9 mm. Konsentrasi DNA dan protein 10% pada kelompok perlakuan sedikit lebih tinggi dibandingkan pada kelompok kontrol positif, dengan nilai serapan pada 260 nm (DNA) dan 280 nm (protein).

Abstract

Community Service (PKM) through Real Work Lecture (KKN) was carried out in Indrasakti Village, Air Putih District, Batu Bara Regency, North Sumatra. This activity aims to increase the role of lecturers and students in providing socialization, education, and improving the entrepreneurial spirit, as well as developing community skills towards sustainable regional development. The methods used are socialization, education and skills training on making used cooking oil soap, making organic waste ecoenzymes, implementing clean and healthy living (PHBS), making MSME financial records, public health checks, and environmental cleanliness mutual cooperation. The stages of this activity are survey and collaboration with the village head; preparation; and counseling, socialization, and education in delivering materials. The results of this PKM KKN activity show an increase in community knowledge and skills with an average knowledge score of 42.5 increasing to 75.8. The conclusion of this activity was an increase in community knowledge and skills by 78.43% which had an impact on improving the quality of life and sustainable regional development in Indrasakti Village.

Abstract

Bakteri Escherichia coli merupakan salah satu bakteri penyebab penyakit diare. Daun mangga harum manis (Mangifera indica L. var. harum manis) diketahui memiliki kandungan senyawa antibakteri. Dalam ukuran nanopartikel, luas kontak permukaan partikel menjadi lebih besar sehingga dapat meningkatkan aktivitas antibakteri. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk membandingkan aktivitas nanopartikel dengan ekstrak etanol daun mangga harum manis terhadap bakteri E. coli. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental dengan variabel bebas yaitu konsentrasi ekstrak etanol daun harum manis (EEDM 25%; EEDM 50%; dan EEDM 75%) dan konsentrasi nanopartikel ekstrak etanol daun mangga harum manis (NEDM 2,5%; NEDM 5%; dan NEDM 7,5%) dengan antibiotic pembanding yaitu tetracyclin.Variabel terikat yaitu aktivitas antibakteri ekstrak etanol dan nanopartikel ekstrak daun mangga harum manis terhadap bakteri E. coli. Karakterisasi nanopartikel ekstrak etanol menggunakan Particle Size Analyzer (PSA). Pengujian aktivitas antibakteri menggunakan metode difusi agar cakram Kirby Bauer. Hasil karakteristik ukuran nanopartikel ekstrak adalah 40,2 nm. Nilai Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) ekstrak etanol daun mangga harum manis adalah 12,4 mm (EEDM 25%); 14,1 mm (EEDM 50%); dan 16,1 mm (EEDM 75%). Nilai ZOI nanopartikel ekstrak etanol daun mangga harum manis adalah 13,8 mm (NEDM 2,5%); 14,5 mm (NEDM 5%); dan 18,6 mm (NEDM 7,5%). Kesimpulannya adalah ekstrak etanol daun mangga harum manis dapat dijadikan nanopartikel ekstrak dengan daya aktivitas antibakteri konsentrasi nanopartikel ekstrak 5% setara efektivitasnya dengan konsentrasi ekstrak etanol daun mangga harum manis 50% terhadap E. coli dengan kategori intermediate dibandingkan dengan Tetracyclin 30 μg, sehingga dapat dikatakan bahwa nanopartikel esktrak dapat memperkecil dosis suatu obat.

Abstract

Human life always coexists with various types of microbes. One of them is kenaga leaves (Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook. F. & Thomson), which is a plant that can be used as a traditional medicine, one of which can be used to treat itching on human skin and can inhibit bacteria, one of which is Staphylococcus epidermidis. This research aimed to determine the types of secondary metabolite compounds contained in ylang-ylang leaves (Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook. F. & Thomson) and to test the antibacterial activity of the n-hexane and ethyl acetate fractions of ylang-ylang leaves (Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook. F. & Thomson). This research method includes simplicia characterization and phytochemical screening on simplicia powder and 96% ethanol extract. Extraction was done by maceration with 96% ethanol solvent, then liquid-liquid fractionation with n-hexane and ethyl acetate solvents. The antibacterial activity test was carried out by measuring the diameter of the inhibition zone using the agar diffusion method. The results of the examination of the characteristics of ylang-ylang leaf Simplicia powder (Cananga odorata (Lam.) Hook. F. & Thomson) showed that the water content was 7.33%, the water-soluble essence content was 26.48%, the total ash was 3.52%, and acid insoluble ash content 0.18%. The results of phytochemical screening showed alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, glycosides, tannins, and steroids. The activity test results on the n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol extract fractions had antibacterial activity. The n-hexane fraction gave strong results against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria at a 70 mg/ml concentration with an inhibitory zone diameter of 12.37 mm. The ethyl acetate fraction was strong against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria at a 70 mg/ml concentration with an inhibition zone diameter of 12.98 mm.

Abstract

Antioxidants are chemical compounds that, in specific amounts, can inhibit or slow down cell damage caused by free radicals. Antioxidants function to protect the body from free radical attacks. The more free radicals in the body, the more cells will be damaged. One plant that contains antioxidant compounds is casturi mango (Mangifera casturi Koesterm.). Casturi mango (Mangifera casturi Koesterm.) is a plant that contains secondary metabolite compounds such as saponins, tannins, triterpenoids, flavonoids, and phenolics which have potential as antioxidants. This research aimed to determine differences in secondary metabolite compounds and antioxidant activity of ethanol extract of casturi mango leaves (Mangifera casturi Koesterm.) growing in Gampong Drien Bungong, Pidie Jaya. The stages of this research include sample processing, making ethanol extract of kasturi mango leaves, characterization examination, phytochemical screening, and antioxidant activity test. The sample used was musk mango leaves. The ethanol extract of casturi mango leaves (Mangifera casturi Koesterm.) was extracted using maceration with 96% ethanol solvent. The antioxidant activity test was carried out using the DPPH (1-1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl) method using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer at a maximum wavelength of 516 nm and vitamin C as a comparison. Based on the results of phytochemical screening tests, there are differences in secondary metabolites in the ethanol extract of kasturi mango leaves in Gampong Drien Bungong, Pidie Jaya, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and glycosides, and the results of antioxidant activity obtained an IC50 value of 9.06 ppm with the category very strong, equivalent to the antioxidant potential of vitamin C, having an IC50 value of 4.63 ppm in the robust category.
