Abstract

Background: Adolescents are vulnerable to engaging in risky behaviors that compromise their health. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a brief intervention that can promote positive behavior changes. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of MI on adolescent life skills related to risky behavior prevention in Indonesia. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with a pre-test/post-test control group was conducted between April and May 2021. The intervention group received five weekly MI counseling sessions (30–45 minutes each). Life skills were assessed using the Life Skill Training Questionnaire for High School Students (LSTQ-HS). An ANCOVA test was used to compare post-intervention scores between groups, controlling for baseline differences. Results: The intervention group’s total life skills score significantly increased from 94.57 (SD=14.06) to 117.80 (SD=4.71) (p<0.001). Significant improvements were also observed across refusal skills, assertiveness, relaxation, and self-control (p<0.05). ANCOVA analysis confirmed a significant difference between the intervention and control groups post-intervention (F=94.82, p<0.001). Conclusions: Motivational interviewing effectively enhanced adolescents' life skills related to risky behavior prevention. Integrating MI into school-based life skills programs may support adolescent health. Future studies with rigorous designs and larger sample sizes are recommended to strengthen these findings.

Abstract

The education level of parents shapes their mindset and perception of illness, significantly influencing their child’s illness perception, coping strategies, psychological well-being, medication adherence, and physical functioning. This study aimed to identify the relationship between the education level and illness perception of parents with children suffering from thalassemia major. This study used secondary data from previous research conducted within the institution that had not been published. It employed a descriptive analytical method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample was selected using purposive sampling, involving 90 parents as participants. Data were collected using demographic data and the Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised (IPQ-R) instrument. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods, with the chi-square test applied for the bivariate analysis. Among all subject, the majority (51,1%) had a secondary education level. A total of 53,3% of parents had a positive illness perception. The relationship between education level and illness perception was not statistically significant (p-value = 0,813). This study indicated that parents' education level did not have a significant impact on their illness perception. Formal education was not the primary factor influencing the illness perception of parents with school-age children with thalassemia major in Bandung.

Abstract

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that can cause a heavy burden on families, especially parents whose children suffer from this condition. Parental involvement in preventing thalassemia in children is key, but there are many challenges to be faced. The aim of this study was to explore parental barriers in preventing recurrent thalassemia in children. This research uses a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. Researchers conducted interviews and focus group discussions with 15 parents of children with thalassemia at a hospital in West Java Province. Data was collected and then analyzed using a phenomenological approach to identify main themes. The results of the study show that the barrier for parents in preventing recurrent thalassemia is the belief that my bloodline is clean, because there are no plans to have more children, so lazy to do screening, busy time, fear, expensive cost, and desire to have another child . This study found that there are various psychosocial and economic factors that influence parents' decisions in preventing thalassemia in their children. Increased education and financial support can help reduce the barriers parents face. More inclusive health policies and social support programs designed to target these factors could improve thalassemia prevention efforts.
