Abstract

Premature infants are at high risk of Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) due to pulmonary immaturity and surfactant deficiency, leading to impaired oxygenation. The quarter prone position is a non-pharmacological intervention that may enhance respiratory function. This case study aimed to analyze the effect of the quarter prone position on oxygenation status in premature neonates with Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Method: A descriptive case study design using a nursing process approach was applied to one premature neonate diagnosed with Respiratory Distress Syndrome who received respiratory support using Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) in a perinatology unit. The quarter prone position intervention was implemented in a structured manner over several days, with continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation and respiratory rate. The findings demonstrated an improvement in oxygenation status, characterized by increased oxygen saturation and stabilization of respiratory rate following the intervention. These results indicate that the quarter prone position contributes to enhanced ventilation effectiveness and reduced respiratory effort in premature neonates with respiratory distress. In conclusion, the quarter prone position is an effective non-pharmacological nursing intervention and may be considered an integral part of neonatal nursing care to optimize oxygenation in premature infants with Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

Abstract

Background: Children with acute conditions that suddenly worsen need immediate care in the Emergency Room (ER). Family-Centered Care (FCC) is considered the best approach in pediatric nursing, but its implementation in the ER is still limited. This is due to various challenges that can increase child and family anxiety and decrease the quality of nursing care. Objective: This study aimed to explore nurses’ perspectives on the constraints of the health service system in implementing FCC in child care in the ER. Methods: The study used a qualitative descriptive design. Eleven nurses working in the ER at Mokopido Tolitoli Regional Hospital participated in the study, which were chosen through purposive sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews conducted from July 11 to July 23, 2023. Data were analyzed manually using a thematic approach. Results: The thematic analysis revealed two main interrelated themes regarding barriers to FCC in the ER: human resource constraints and organizational constraints. Human resource constraints include limited nursing staff, varying educational levels, lack of training or outreach on FCC, lack of competency, and communication barriers. Meanwhile, organizational constraints include high ER workloads, limited nurse time, and a focus on emergency medical procedures rather than a holistic approach. These various barriers lead to suboptimal family involvement in the care of children in the ER. Conclusion: The implementation of FCC in the ER still faces major challenges. These findings highlight the need for a strategic approach and supportive policies to improve nurse capacity and foster a collaborative and responsive hospital environment for patients’ families.

Abstract

Introduction: Many students experience academic stress during their learning process, which can negatively impact their academic performance. One effective way to manage this stress is by improving self-regulated learning (SRL). Students with high levels of SRL are better equipped to manage their learning, leading to improved academic achievement. Objective: This study aims to describe the levels of self-regulated learning among nursing students. Methods: A quantitative descriptive design was used in this study. The sample was selected using a convenience sampling technique, and data were collected using the Self-Regulated in Online Learning Questionnaire (SOL-Q). The data were analyzed using univariate descriptive analysis and presented in tables. The sample consisted of 210 nursing students. Results: The demographic characteristics of the participants showed that the majority were female (54.1%) and aged between 17-19 years (57.4%). The findings revealed that 60% (126 students) demonstrated low self-regulation in their learning, suggesting that many students face challenges in managing their academic responsibilities. Efforts to overcome these problems require collaboration between institutions and health workers to improve Self-regulated learning for nursing students. Conclusion: Self-regulated learning is important to improve the effective learning process in students.
