Abstract

Poor soil quality and inefficient nutrient utilization remain major constraints in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivation, often resulting in reduced plant growth, lower productivity, and suboptimal fruit quality. This study aims to evaluate the growth performance of rose tomatoes through the integration of open-field cultivation and hydroponic planting systems. The research methods included land preparation using the Pythagorean technique to ensure proper spacing and planting layout, the application of organic fertilizers to improve soil fertility, and the transition to a hydroponic drip irrigation system using rockwool as the growing medium during weeks 1 to 7 of plant development. Plant growth parameters, including plant height, leaf development, stem vigor, and overall plant health, were observed throughout the cultivation period. The results indicated that the combination of appropriate soil management practices and precise nutrient delivery in the hydroponic system significantly enhanced nutrient uptake and supported healthy plant growth. Furthermore, the drip irrigation system helped optimize water use efficiency while reducing nutrient losses. This integrated cultivation approach demonstrated its potential as an effective solution for maintaining crop quality and productivity, particularly in areas with limited land resources. Overall, the findings suggest that integrated management practices can provide a practical, efficient, and sustainable strategy for farmers seeking to improve horticultural production in modern agricultural systems.

Abstract

This article discusses the application of greenhouse technology combined with the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) hydroponic system for Pakcoy (Brassica rapa L.) cultivation. The objective of this study is to provide an in-depth examination of Pakcoy cultivation techniques, from planting to harvesting, and to analyze the system's effectiveness in terms of land, water, and nutrient efficiency. The discussion covers the critical role of greenhouses in controlling the microclimate (temperature, humidity, and light) and protecting crops from external disturbances. In addition, the study highlights the advantages of hydroponic cultivation as a sustainable agricultural approach capable of supporting intensive vegetable production in limited spaces. The integration of greenhouse and NFT technology is expected to reduce environmental stress factors and improve crop growth consistency throughout the cultivation cycle. The results indicate that the NFT method in a greenhouse environment significantly enhances productivity and yield quality compared to conventional methods. The success of this system relies heavily on precise nutrient management (EC and pH), optimal temperature control (22–26°C), and stable nutrient flow rates to ensure a consistent supply of oxygen and nutrients to the plant roots. Overall, this cultivation model offers a promising alternative for modern and sustainable vegetable production.

Abstract

Sweet potato productivity is largely determined by agronomic practices, particularly plant spacing and nutrient management. However, excessive reliance on chemical fertilizers may negatively affect soil sustainability. Therefore, alternative nutrient sources derived from industrial waste are increasingly explored within the framework of sustainable agriculture and circular resource utilization. This study aimed to evaluate the growth and yield performance of Beniazuma sweet potato under different fertilizer treatments and plant spacing arrangements. The experiment was conducted in Dramaga, Bogor Regency, Indonesia, from June to December 2022 using a factorial randomized complete block design. Two plant spacing levels (40 cm × 40 cm and 60 cm × 60 cm) and six fertilizer treatments (control, NPK, milk waste-based organic fertilizer, and compost at different doses) were applied. Observed variables included tuber number, tuber weight, and shoot biomass. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance followed by the LSD test at the 5% level. The findings revealed that plant spacing had a stronger influence on yield components compared to fertilizer treatments. Wider spacing (60 cm x 60 cm) increased tuber weight up to ~0.3 kg/plant compared to 0.1–0.2 kg at closer spacing. Organic fertilizers derived from industrial waste performed comparably to inorganic fertilizers, indicating their feasibility as sustainable nutrient sources in sweet potato cultivation.

Abstract

Abstract

The use of organic fertilizers in horticultural farming remains limited due to farmers’ perceptions regarding effectiveness, practicality, and economic considerations. Understanding farmers’ preferences for organic fertilizer attributes is therefore important to support the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. This study aims to analyze the preferences of Okiagaru Agricoop partner farmers toward organic fertilizer attributes in horticultural cultivation in Cianjur Regency, West Java. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach using conjoint analysis to evaluate farmers’ preferences for different combinations of fertilizer attributes. Data were collected through field observations, questionnaires, and direct interviews with 30 partner farmers selected using purposive sampling. The attributes analyzed included price, quality, effectiveness, and ease of use. The results show that ease of use is the most influential attribute, with the highest importance value (30.397%) and utility estimate (0.542), indicating that farmers strongly prefer fertilizers that are easy to apply in farming activities. This was followed by quality (23.580%), effectiveness (23.093%), and price (22.930%). In addition, most farmers (96.67%) expressed their willingness to process organic waste into organic fertilizer. These findings indicate that practical and functional attributes play a crucial role in farmers’ decisions to adopt organic fertilizers. Therefore, the development and dissemination of organic fertilizer technologies should prioritize ease of application, effectiveness, and affordability to encourage wider adoption among horticultural farmers.

Abstract

Geographic Information System (GIS) for land suitability assessment integrates spatial and attribute data to evaluate and map areas for food crops and horticulture. The system applies parameters such as temperature, rainfall, water pH, clay CEC, organic carbon, and other soil characteristics, analyzed through a rule-based approach. Its main goal is to optimize agricultural land use by aligning crop selection with physical and environmental conditions. GIS-based analysis enables accurate digital mapping and categorizes land into highly suitable, moderately suitable, marginally suitable, and unsuitable classes, providing valuable insights for farmers, governments, and stakeholders in sustainable land management. System development employed the Prototype methodology, emphasizing iterative stages of requirement gathering, rapid design, prototype construction, user evaluation, and refinement. The Land Suitability GIS (SigKL) was tested at five partner-farmer sites in Cianjur and Sukabumi. Black Box Testing confirmed that all 20 functional features achieved a 100% success rate. The system supports the identification of potential new agricultural areas and offers recommendations for improving less productive land. The novelty of this research lies in integrating FAO (1976) classification with interactive digital mapping and locally tailored knowledge rules, enabling real-time accessibility. Unlike prior studies limited to static analysis, SigKL introduces an adaptive, rule-based GIS prototype with interactive visualization, directly supporting decision-making for sustainable agriculture. This innovation enhances transparency and accessibility, contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to food security and sustainable farming.
